...Who knows, if he so desires and that the community approves of it, as well. For now his plate is full and he has to ensure the best quality and reception will emerge from this very current project.
Maybe there is an alternate universe where Master IGA proposed a 3D version of Bloodstained. Haha. I guess I'll be going now. Take care, have fun.

-This thread has been created after the release of Double Dragon IV, which is the subject of controversy. Is it good, or bad?*-
I have been feeling that the debate on what makes a good spiritual successor of a game is truly fascinating. That said, what is your general feeling on retro-gaming?
Myself, I have begun in the eighties with the NES, with relatively good playability and graphics, if well-done enough. The sound quality was a tad unrefined because of the limitations of the era, but it is still good to me. Some legendary themes stem from there after all. I feel that only a game that was utter garbage in all departments or had a fatal flaw could be condemned. Limitations were aplenty and glitches could easily occur (some leading to exploiting) as well. Pixels are no problem to me, as long as the world is not populated by living blocks/boxes on legs/golems, etc.
I certainly prefer the SNES and PS1 eras, which are my favorites, but there are modern games that I wouldn't refuse at all. Being a console gamer, I gladly escaped practices like shovelware and shareware. I guess I am a bit picky.
- In defense of pure old-school: As of nowadays, I wouldn't mind playing old entries as is. No loading times, no DLC, no cumbersome interface, no need for updates, no "now loading, please wait", no being spied on.
That said, my approach on puzzles, reflexes and analysis of setting plot and character motives (among others) have sharpened since then, so I don't think I could play games the same way I did back then. Would a game too easy or sad to replay because you know how to tackle it? I'd say, it is all about patience and understanding the context.
- In defense of remakes: I do enjoy a game that has been worked on enough so original drawbacks have been eliminated, or at least the worst ones removed. It is easier to save and resume, accidental save-wiping is tougher to trigger, no crazy ass-long passwords to enter, no 255 limit, no four or seven letters max for character-naming**, easier to the eyes and ears (maybe), more possibilities of development, achievements (I like them but I generally don't try to get them all)...
As long as they don't pull the stupid retcon card. Grainy filters, or scanlines as options make me twitchy, too.
- As for the rest: For me, direct porting without modifications is a bit lazy, under the motive of "Hey, play the game exactly like it was back then!". The same goes for games where they added unremovable glitches to make it more "authentic". I am not that nostalgic, you know?
I am less keen on games that have been branded as new entries, with radically new mechanics and/or full series reset. Is it something you can relate your experience to? Can you feel the old spirit inside it?
Thanks, enjoy the thread.
*I don't think I'll buy it at all. Sorry, Arc Systemworks. ** You get fictional silver points if you manage to give me examples of JRPGs plagued by that! Redeemable for a crazy random video or two on Youtube.

Oh, I had forgotten there are impatient ones that wouldn't have second thoughts on exploiting data that way. It's sort of shadowy a practice to me, but for them it's akin to finding a buried treasure. Maybe they should get an easter egg like "Hey you, no touchy" upon trying to open some files. ...and so, I can't really understand crackers.
I got the idea now, thank you.

Ah yes, glasses, I've been there too. Go see your optician at once. It's fine as long as they're not broken. In that case, I would hope you got a backup pair, but sadly it seems you don't at all.
Someday, if your vision gets stable (maybe it is already), you should go for vision correction surgery. I went for it and it's a whole different world (esp' when it comes to swimming or not having to look for them in the morning and after a shower or so).
Etc.

Great article! Koei Tecmo is basically pulling the all-stars card and they're putting old franchises back to the limelight... Deception is a series where you lay traps to kill trespassers at all costs. Truly special. Oh and of course, KT will aim for shameless paid DLC tactics. They're widely known for that, character crossovers as well as their advanced way of focusing on fanservice.
Btw, it's DOATEC, as in DoA and Tecmo... silly acronym, yet it works. Dead or Alive is a good series besides the blatant fanservice and outrageous pile of DLC. Seemingly very tactical, but you can do fine with mashing buttons and win in the 5th entry.
And then, Chinese and Japanese soldiers simultaneously summoned in the same world and probably working together? Quite a feat that little foxgirl performed.
Oh and thanks for your hard work.

I have been trying a few demos of games on Steam lately. Today, it was Fortune Summoners. It is a very cute game that seems to take the most inspiration from Ys III (which I never played, btw). And so, I play it* until Arche, the protagonist, goes to class. I then quit fullscreen mode for some reason and get back to it... The result is hilarious. It's all garbled. The following screenshot is worth a thousand words... Enjoy! Bonus points if you manage to see that there are words in the mix. Please just don't overdo it. Ms. Sophia: Does everyone underst and? Arche: Umm... Dear Teacher, is no an acceptable answer?
Etc.
*Well, I try to. The lag is intense there. Too bad, so sad. QQ.

What always worries me about consoles are game and system updates (Sometimes or often for useless features). When it comes to the Wii U, who knows when they will stop giving new software versions. It shouldn't happen too soon, but who knows with Nintendo.

Galamoth I agree with you on this. Was it to be a full entry in the Castlevania franchise, I would rather accept that 2D could be maintained. That said, Bloodstained a new IP, free of bounds and forced management from higher-ups (that sometimes are businessmen who don't even have any experience in the gaming field). Even if is to be a spiritual successor, there is no obligated path on visuals indeed (as long as it is side-scrolling RPG platforming action). Bloodstained got to be original at least or it would be deemed "just a little tribute to old -vanias*). It is also true that some famous series have gone into a radical change of visual style and/or retconned plot. I guess that I am glad I am not into gambling. Mario going into full 3D one day and be the star of a smartphone game another one? I'd have lost big then. *I can sense a lack of emancipation when I write that sort of sample line. That is so strange.

Hello, here is my set of questions and comments: - I am glad that spikes and other traps aren't that damaging. In that sort of games, if would be quite a hindrance for progress. I don't think damage will be lessened from them as Daltyn levels up and gets better equipment, but who knows? - If there is gold, there is a merchant. what will be the item cap? I guess it's the usual 9. - Will there be more than a few lines per NPC? Stereotypes are die-hard, you know. - Have you chosen a number of different weapons with their pros and cons? Special abilities? Will there be skills that are out of the ordinary (magic-imbued and so on)? - It's also nice to see that enemies have different patterns. A way to have them diary-registered for further referring would do really good (also a suggestion for Bloodstained). - Any penalties for dying? I don't think there should be any for Chasm besides the ever classical "loss of all unsaved progress but no resources taken upon dying". - I truly am pleased you cite your inspirations for Chasm. purifyweirdshard is right, it is more akin to a cross between 32 and 16 bits. It's a fair choice to give it an old charm, while not making it look too... "antique".* Keep us updated! Godspeed to you guys! Lestaroth *Those who went the ultra-minimalistic way can defend it's to make players dive more into imagination (even if I feel it is dishonest sometimes). I know I wouldn't feel fine with playing games with an Atari 2600 aspect. Began with the NES. Having absolutely no regrets upon it.

I guess this thread is another I jumped late into, so I won't be able to comment on what was already written in it.
Do have this instead: (a full playlist of an orchestral remake of Link's Awakening's tracks, fan-made... Needless it's one of my favorite entries of the series ever. So much mystery, poetry and all)
Someday, I will talk about my history of Zelda gaming, which withered with the later years, as I was not addicted to Nintendo games anymore (esp' because they're system-exclusives). The attachment to it is real though, like for some other major franchises of the '80s and '90...
To be continued...

A prototype/demo is more precise to grasp the artistic direction, mechanics and so on. Nothing is final until it goes gold, though.
As for myself, I got tired of 3D games (esp' when it comes to controls) and something different than pixels is fine, if it's not glitchy or causes slowdown. 2.5D is perfect for me... as long as parallax, dynamics and lighting are satisfactory enough. I would favor stability, playability, plot, general ambience, music, then graphics, in that order (as long as nothing is broken and ruins the rest).
Sincerely, just try the final version when it is available. Plenty of time left. Just trust it a little.

So it will exist, for a special mode. Actually, it would do good for an alternate, randomly-generated castle. I guess that both players would start at level 1 and progress along the way. Of course there would be a message at the start, telling that their main Bloodstained story would be totally safe and unchanged and that this mode can only work if the two original players are present (ID check and all). Thanks for clarifying, purifyweirdshard

asynch is fine for this game, having full coop changes the gameplay a ton and unless its balanced for that (or part of a secondary character mode similar to richter or the sisters) itd make the game way too easy (the controllable familiar idea could work out really well though since its an ai assist and integrated into the mechanics of the game already, but then you still have the question of p2p or server online and the can of worms that opens up for devs) i could however see this mode being great for a future game where the game is built around 2 characters like por had, and having the ability to switch to 2player mode on the fly or by loading a save with 2p mode active and inviting someone/handing them the 2p controller Yes, a thread went that way, the guy wanted Miriam to team up with Johannes or Zangetsu Portrait of Ruin style... I firmly replied it wouldn't do good, since it's the more or less solo journey of Miriam there. Only a sequel or mini-game or special mode could make that work, in my opinion.

Is co-op an option compatible with the game's plot and lore? (That said, my post on familiars kind of goes towards that, if they get unlocked) But only if it is for some mini-game or special mode.
That said, A manually-controlled familiar would be fun, until a sabotage occurs. I'm a hardened soloer, though...

A project so wast like this.. I wonder if Mana and Iga with the rest of the team actually dreams portions of the game. Like how you can see the sun even after taken your eyes from it after a while, burnt into the eyes. I know, playing Diablo II for like 1-2 days, I actually saw the bottom left and right globes of red and blue, slowly drain as I were going by a car. I guess I needed more food and beverages to keep them up (or sleep perhaps?). So yeah, THEY are working like mad, I am sure of it. They even made sure to give us updates less frequent, and if that ain't a good gesture towards the actual development.. I do not know what is! Put also a side, the private lives, and the part where they are looking for inspiration, and what WE write here. Oh boy, they need the full team in full force. And they are given it 200.6%! Persistence of vision? Nah, that is not healthy, it's a sign of overdoing it. A burnout is a real danger. I'm sure they have a strict, proper lifestyle for it. They're professionals after all. Dedication is where it's at. "He who wish to travel far take care of his mount". P.S.: Got the reference. It would almost make me want to grab my PSP and launch you know what for this. Almost.

No matter how you look at it, we're getting spoiled here. We have the Igavana, Classicvania, Roguevanaia, Pixelvania, Boss Rush even Boss Revenge. Even some of our community gets to pitch in with weapons and the likes. I remember Hearing Ben Judd saying in a BCB episode that this is serendipity at work... and I agree. Master IGA promised he would deliver and I trust and support him fully on it. He also managed to gather quite the teams for it. Serendipity, however? It's nothing about a fortunate, unplanned discovery (unless it is about the first stages, upon discovering how passionate, excited and eager a public existed for a new metroidvania, those who eagerly played his games over the decades). I think it's all planned and much elaborated. It's just a love letter's most proper reply to all metroidvania lovers out there (and not just CSOTN and latter entries). Backer feedback is welcome and carefully studied and worked on... Not every company does that. Etc. Adamant? Ass-kissing? Fanboyism? Blinded by passion and hope? Nothing of the sort. I am just very confident and optimistic no matter what. The beginning was promising. The demo from what we saw, is well-made and there is still so much more to do until next year. We get regular detailed updates. We are really listened to. The rest for me is a bonus. I on the other hand, have witnessed the decay of many companies and some famous series or plain cultural clashes over the decades, sometimes with a complete loss of focus* and/or disrespect towards their public. It was sad to see how terrible it can get, sometimes for futile reasons. I know it will never happen here. I may be a bit of a preacher though. I don't want to be the irritable zealot kind, though. Please bear with me. Bahaha. *I do have the proper example for it.
