I wonder if she does the same special chair-sitting animation as Alucard, but when Miriam does it, the camera actually changes perspective and zooms in on her just chilling there? That might be neat.
I imagine it was just an Igavania reference way to show her, though.

Going back to medieval dress, they were pretty symmetrical no? Miriam is not a symmetrical character, but it's not out of the question for her to have shoulder clothing on one side, especially if she already has it on the other side.

Asymmetry is usually considered less attractive, but more memorable. It might also be a superstitious thing.

Its supposed to be less attractive on a body. But im not sure if it is supposed to be for clothing.

My second favorite Gundam, the Nu Gundam, is asymmetrically designed. I find it appealing. Same with Miriam. I think the shoulder clothing is fine. I mean, the single shoulder pad thing has been around for a while now. I think it got more popular with character designs in the 90s. I can see why. Just enough armor so that the usual weakpoints is covered. Depending upon the shoulder, they could favor one side of their body or the other or one hand over another. As far as..."sexualization", really? Look, I've never been bothered by it and I hardly think it's a problem. I don't think that's what they were even going for to begin with. Then again for a goth girl, Miriam is actually pretty modest.

People arent talking about the big roach carapace shoulder thing on her right side. Thats been there all along. The discussion is about the smaller one on her left shoulder that was not there before.

I believe Dragon_of_Dojima is pointing out that there could be 0 shoulder pads for the fashion design. The reason there is only 1 is because it could be used as a guard for the dominant arm swinging a sword, let's say. If you keep sticking your arm in dangers path you want it protected, the other arm doesn't need shoulder padding because historically you would be fighting at an angle where that shoulder is farthest from harm. Have a guard on 1 side is common, it is lighter to have 1 over 2. I see no reason to cover the other shoulder.

Now that you mention it, yeah, it COULD be that. Look at Miriam's arms in general. Her right hand and forearm are bare, and her right shoulder has that shoulder pad, while her left forearm is HEAVILY armored. It's very cleverly designed combat assymetry, really.

The design for her shoulders and arms in general is both classic as much as it is practical. Old times it was typical for the offensive arm to be less hindered by material with the defensive arm being clade with material.
Then the fictional design part. Of looking cool, serving as conceptual (shows both sides) and showing artistic tastes. For Miriam, it also demonstrats her progress of crystalization, being more female designed (show off some of her left breast and shoulder) and character personal taste.
I've seen lots of armed and armored sided of characters. Ranging from Assassin's Creed to Legacy of Kain. So ignoring practical means it may be more artistic. I'm just happy it wasn't designed by Techmo. Or it would have been over sexualized...

Pretty sure it is the opposite way around with her design though unless she is left handed. I am sure I have seen it for both offensive and defensive arms though. At any rate I wouldn't call it a shoulder piece at all, it is only on her chest as far as I can see and as Ghalion pointed out (I think it was him) the topic was about the cloth on the other shoulder. The pictures of the Retiarius with the manica is cool though. Anyone know what that half-breastplate thing that archers wear is called? I feel like that is the closest thing.
The dumbest thing about the outfit I would have to say, for practical purposes mind you, is the heavily armored legs with exposed thighs and torso. Maybe she is just showing off and giving the enemies a fighting chance. lol

Sectional plate mail or half plate. For her thighs it might to imply it doesn't hinder her mobility. The legs would be heavy but she could twist and have less strain with moving them. Weight being the issue, not something folding or otherwise getting in the way of her legs lifting.
For torso, outside of artistic sense, it may be to imply she isn't a full blown warrior. So lacking training with heavy armors and such it may be to offer protection while not letting anything get in the way of her body twisting, breathing (not necessary for character but for suggestion to the hindering) or something else. The Victorian age didn't have full clade armors like times before. So weaving metal plates with cloth and leather is the stylistic sense they are interpreting from the time. To give it a class as well as some effectiveness.

Another thing to consider is she was an orphan used as a test subject for most of her childhood. I doubt she had any formal training for combat. She could just be winging it and using armor and weapons all wrong. And on a similar point, where would she even get weapons and armor? Most things would be make shift in my opinion. So maybe a lack of materials is the reason behind "incomplete" armor?

lol I would love it if they actually took the time to make all these reasons for it. But yeah, it is clearly just for the aesthetics as I've seen this countless times. I remember there were a pair of women in White Knight Chronicles that had similar armor but their torso was even more exposed. I think it was basically bikinis with heavy leg armor and big gauntlets. I am sure if they ever left the town they died immediately.
(....actually I say that but I remember my team would often run stuff in our underwear for the speed boost so I dunno. haha)

Lack of armor means you can dodge easier. " Polybius' Histories describe how the Gaesatae, hired by other Celtic peoples, the Boii and Insubres as mercenaries to fight the Romans, stood naked at the head of their army at the Battle of Telamon in 225BC. Diodorus Siculus reported other instances of such combat: "Some use iron breast-plates in battle, while others fight naked, trusting only in the protection which nature gives." Another possible reason for this was to avoid infection of wounds caused by contact with contaminated clothing and debris.
Julius Caesar records in his account of the Gallic War that the Gauls went into battle naked save for their weapons.
Sometimes the soldiers wore no clothing but were covered in war paint, a custom that allegedly gave the Picts their name." Like my ancestors say. "Go naked or go home!"

Yup which worked for us in the game but I think it is all or nothing for that. Naked with armored legs and arms is a deadly combo. It's like a tanks made out of cardboard with ultra-armored treads and barrel. lol
As most people know the Greeks did athletics nude for the benefits it granted. I remember a story about a race being held where one man's loincloth fell off and everyone noted that he ran much faster so that became the norm. I don't quite remember the time period it is attributed to (book is out of reach...) but I believe we have actual evidence of nudity in athletics far before that period.
And before anyone gets the wrong idea about me I believe all the characters in this game should be clothed! haha

If I recall, old time Germans would participate in medieval warfare with little clothing as well. Which helped form the 'berserker' label. So less hindrance the deadlier it is for injury but also the more beneficial it is for mobility. It is a terrible double edged sword...
