I know there is a poll but I wanted a thread poll too, to read what others thought.
I like shader 2 more. It felt more smooth and dark. Character stood out more for me and was easy on the eyes

I like the Miriam in shader #1 and the environment in shader #2, but it's hard for me to choose.

Shader 1 for me. Something about #2 feels wrong, especially on Miriam.

Shader 1 is the best starting off point. The character zoomed out looks darker and more detailed. The windows in the background look more moody and the fog certainly helps the darkness. Shader 2 looks too drowned out and lacks the detail of the first shader. It has elements i do like, for instance to me it looks way more 2d in spirit ( despite what the descriptions say) but the coloring and the detail are lacking which makes it lose for me.

After comparing side by side, I am thinking shader 1 now.

I would tweak #2, which I prefer, to look a bit more gloomy and overall somewhat "dusty" looking, adding particle effects like speckles, fluff, dust bunnies, patches of spider web, carbonized looking stuff and the likes here and there to show a more vivid but run-down world. I'd lean toward #2 for sure though, even if still not that convincing to me. It sure seems more retro-ish to me. I find #1 ugly: too smooth and shiny!

I know it'd be asking for a lot but short clip of each shader would probably help people make an informed decision. Just seeing how the character looks moving within the environment helps. Otherwise, yeah....the first just looks a lot more colorful which is what i'd want out of an IGAVANIA. The background kinda reminds me of Mighty number 9...it's got that very overly blocky 3d looking backgrounds. The original teaser video had a better essence of IGAVANIA but I guess I can't judge based off of one room. I also don't think what I'm saying makes much sense. Does anyone know what I'm trying to say and can elaborate it better?

Dangamer and Fangamer Steve : Is there going to be video of the shaders in action or just screenshots? Seeing some movement (just walking/running/jumping/moving through rooms) with the shaders in action would help make deciding easier. Anyway, as it stands I think I like Shader #1 more. The environment pops out a bit more and the hue matches closer to what I had in mind for the castle. It seems more ominous and draped in Red given some of the art whereas the second shader looks a bit too muted? Miriam also looks much better with Shader #1. In the second one she looks ghastly pale.

Comparing the shaders feels a little bit like like visiting an eye doctor. "Okay, which shader do you prefer? Shader one? Or shader two? One... Two... One. Two."
Right now, I'm leaning towards shader 1. I think Miriam's character model looks better, I like the lighting and fog, I can see the books on the book shelf, but there's a little bit too much red. With shader 2 the background looks better, but Miriam feels too desaturated, the furniture comes off as a little bit 2D-ish, I can't see the books on the shelf as well, and various objects feel like they're from different games.
I'm looking forward to seeing shaders 3 and 4 at the end of the month. Hopefully one of them will be a happy medium between the first two.

On #1 you can see more details on the scene, looks less flat and have better colours, Miriam's model perfectly fits it. However it could have some tweaks on light and shadows, as some stated some objects/part of the scene seem too birght on #1. While #2 seems to have a better atmosphere at first glance, it lacks other important features. I believe a tweaked #1 is the way to go. Also i think a single room is not enough to decide about such an important feature.
The question remains: where is Miriam's knee? xD (No, serious, her model looks absolutely nice)
It could help if on the next update besides the screenshots we could have a video of her moving around, it may help to choose, i guess.

crocodile: I haven't heard anything to suggest they'll have animation ready in time, but I'll ask. On a related note—and this is me talking, not the campaign—I think animation is going to have a lot to do with how "2D" this game ends up looking. When you look at a game like the Strider remake, much of the pseudo-2D charm is in the way the characters move and the effects they have on the world.

Tough one. In my opinion, shader one brings things to life thanks to the warm colours whereas shader two gives the gothic vibe. Both are good in their own rights. To sum it up: what Dangamer said.

I definitely prefer Shader 1 overall. I think the hatched shadows in shader 2 are interesting though, my concerns with both however are the same... All the detail in the shader is lost when zoomed out to game view. You're going to be spending most if not all your time looking at the game from the games camera view, so I don't understand why these shaders seem to focus on what Miriam looks like close up.
I hope the level of detail in the modeling is improved as well. It's so low poly it's hard to believe it's being made for the current gen platforms.

Not much more I can add to what folks have already said. I like some of the unique qualities of the second shader, but much prefer Miriam under the first one.
And thank you for grouping the photos by picture focus, instead of by shader... much easier to compare!

I'm in the shader two camp for the environment, but I do have to agree that shader one has a better miriam.

Both hurt my eyes at different points. :S
Trying to judge as best as I can. Shader 1 has a better Miriam. She's easier on the eyes and she still pops out. I like the backgrounds and stuff more in Shader 2.
As for which one gets my jollies more? I'm leaning towards 1, but I wish I could combine these two aspects. I'd love to see any other shaders you might have. Now to write all this stuff in that google document.
