Shader 1 for Miriam, but Shader 2 for the backgrounds.
Shader 1 in the backgrounds is a little too clean looking. Doesn't have the 'dark' feel I'd prefer in a gothic setting. Shader 2 supplies what is closer to what I want.
Conversely, Miriam herself looks much better in Shader 1. I don't think that I can convey it in words very well, her skin, and particularly her face look "off" with Shader 2.
I find myself leaning toward Shader 1. *votes*

At first, I was half and half. I love the way Miriam looks in Shader 1 and I like the atmosphere of Shader 2. Now that I had the time to take in the details, I'm leaning towards Shader 1. Why? I'm really digging the tinted fog idea.

I honestly think the backgrounds could use a bit more of a gritty realistic look. Not in terms of coloring or anything but in terms of straight up detail. It reminds me a bit of Mighty Number 9 as of right now. ( not a bash i like how it looks so far) just my two cents.
A good example of what would be preferred imo is how backgrounds looked in lament of innocence. It had a more realistic vibe about them.

Shader 1, but both still need to be more cell shaded, so that it become indistinguishable from hand drawn sprites, like Cyberconnect's Naruto games.

I think they should really take to the artstyle of Lament Of Innocence. The one critique I have is it all looks too CLEAN. Too sterile. Look at how cartoony it looks compared to this - i.ytimg.com/vi/qcMBmZxOlDs/maxresdefault.jpg

Here's what I posted in the KS comments:
Shader #1 looks better up close. But Shader #2 has more potential in my eyes with one major tweak. Give Miriam some anime style high contrast shading and lighting, and I think we'd be hitting a good 2D vibe with Shader #2. As is, she's TOO flat; it kind of reminds me of Attack on Titan before the BluRay update.
In fact, if you're going for a 2D appearance with the shaders, you may want to experiment with simpler flatter character textures and emphasize the shading and lighting. Currently the textured cloth kind of looks at odds with the flattened appearance the shader gives.

I like the Miriam in shader #1 and the environment in shader #2, but it's hard for me to choose. Wow, I did the Google form already, but that's my thoughts exactly! Miriam in shader #1 feels warm, vibrant and alive. A great contrast to the oppressive, cold, and malevolent atmosphere of shader #2. The hatching lines are cool, but I feel a bit too jarring. I am hoping they try a combination of the two. As for the environment in shader #1, it seemed too cheery to me. Although the wine haze it seemed to cast was unique! Both were great, can't wait to see the other 2!

Choosing which shader I prefer took quite some time. I chose Shader 1 because Miriam's character model looks better than in Shader 2. On the other hand, Shader 2 presents a dark and gothic style background, which I also like. However, Shader 1 to me seems closer to the concept art of the game. I look forward to see the remaining 2 shaders. Overall, I like both shaders. It was really hard to choose which one is better.

CastleDan I understand your concern with backgrounds needing to looked lived in and detailed. The purpose of this was to help give a direction for shaders, so don't be concerned with that at this point. Level of detail in backgrounds has always been a strong part of IGA's games, and like Matt Papa said on the last BCB episode: They will work on it until IGA is happy with the quality of the art.

I mean I'll stop talking about it if you want but if we are discussing the visuals of the game and this will clearly be the one topic where everyone will do that...I feel like everything should be addressed.
