Shovel Knight is *technically* an extra playable character, but not really since you don't actually play the whole game as him, you just transform into him.
And he's not the only one that you can transform into...
The third playable character is not confirmed yet.

At this point is made almost clear that Gebel, Mysterious Man (Orlok Dracule) and Alfred (Yes Mr. Welldone) will be included in the Boss Rush Mode; this leaves the third character spot to someone who’s not part of the game

O.D. may not be the 3rd character, but I certainly do hope he gets a playable character mode like Zangetsu, maybe through DLC down the line or in a sequel.
