And it will get Clannad at the end of the year. I think this is a good thing, hope to see in the future VNs releases already in english, though this is still a dream, a big one on that, lol. I'm definitely looking forward to Clannad getting an official release. I tired to play it before, but I could push myself past Kyou's route(though I did like that one). I hear that the new translation is supposed to be much better.

So far, "XBlaze - Code: Embryo" is the only visual novel I've ever played and finished.
I've watched someone else play Clannad before.

I really want this to get a translation. Or I should just stop being lazy and get to learning Japanese...

By the time a translation finished, you'll be good enough in japanese to read the damn thing.

Well you could buy to support Sekai Project/Mangagamer. There are couple VNs that are worth buying, like Grisaia no Kajitsu (The Fruit of Grisaia) and Planetarian ~the reverie of a little planet~, even World End Economica. Higurashi is a good one too. Someone even put out a patch to use the PS3 sprites and voices. Yes! I own all the Higurashi manga (my Lord there are so many arcs). One of the best titles out there, such a pleasant and disturbing read/experience.

It seems to be working well for the anime thread, so here's some VN music! As always, never check the comments of a VN you haven't read.

Well, in certain VNs, you do have to make choices that will determine what kind of ending you get. Also the narrative of some games are told in a VN style, but still have gameplay. It's pretty much an interactive manga with voice acting and special/sound effects. The voicing acting isn't like an audio book, rather its the character themselves speaking, like watching an anime or listening to a Drama CD. Parts where no one is speaking, it won't have voice acting. Interactive means there are points in a Visual Novel where you have to choose between a few choices, and the story will progress from what you pick. There's a chance for you to meet a dead end(I recommend you see these, they're awesome), or continue with the story. People generally save before choosing, so they can witness what happens with each choice, and not lose progress if they meet a dead end. Here's an example of player choice: Most Visual Novels have a gimmick of some sort that makes them unique. Tears to Tiara is a full on game for example. Fate/Stay Night has a status menu thing that gives you info about a certain group of characters, among other things like info on weapons that you have seen so far. It really adds to the experience. An example of Fate/Stay Night's Status Menu thing: Visual Novels that don't have player choice are called Kinetic Novels. Planetarian ~The Reverie of a Little Planet~ for example is a Kinetic Novel(and a freakin' damn good one at that). I know what Anime and Manga are, but what is a "visual novel"? Arcueid teachings: what is a visual novel, sensei?!

Ok, I see so it's like a digital choose-your-own-adventure with audio. 9gif No, it's the opposite, at its core there no animation, no choices, no audio, only a (sometimes uninteractive) story. It can be expanded from there but the quality of the writing/story must still be high enough to be what defines the game

Ok no choose-your-own-adventure. Ciel said there was audio. No, I made myself unclear, I was saying the audio part she was talking about was optional to make a VN game. A VN with no sounds whatsoever is still a VN, but a game without any story whatsoever can not be a VN. Analogue, a hate story is a VN, Minecraft isn't.

Ok no choose-your-own-adventure. Ciel said there was audio. There is some VNs (actually, there is a lot) that have no voices, so it isn't necessary for the core of a VN.

Choices aren't needed for the core of a VN, Kinetic Novel is what are called that kind of VNs.
