With recycling assets just to get a demonstration for character mobility, that what they used is not in line with anything else quality wise. That video doesn't show the depth of quality (or lack there of) so I don't understand why it is being held at such a high merit... We didn't see anything without a blur and haze. To me, something a little more colorful than Deadlight (https://youtu.be/QUlKEH8Kc3c) or perhaps just mixed a little with Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate would be a good base to build up from. I cluld see it fine. It looks like a 2d IGAVANIA with nice scrolling effects but with 3d models. IGAVANIAS always recycles assets for backgrounds. The fact is, they got the concept art into the world which gave it a 2d look. Which honestly is what everyone wants anyways, at least most people. So idk if it's doable but if they want to get that 2d feel that's the way to do it

Nah please no, not realistic graphics please, we are deviating too much here. This is a Castlevania that will play in 2D 1/2 and will try to match Igarashi's art, this is not Lord of Shadows, Legacy of Kain or Blood Rayne although those games looked good also.

I NEVER said realistic graphics. I said something that doesn't look so simplistic and un-textured. I posted examples. There's a middle ground that can be hit.

I thought you meant the walking test video with Iga-san playing an alpha version. But yeah, they already mentioned and made motions to not follow that path. I think it would have been a nice twist if it was like a mixture of Bloodrayne Betrayal and Shank/Dust Elysian Tale. So next case scenario. Though they know they cannot please 100% of all the backers (that is realistically impossible) but as long as they communicate with us and we with them in turn, we should mitigate the lesser of two evils. Which is why I suggested Deadlight. It was bleak, dark with a modern touch. It could be changed to twist that modern touch to be more Gothic.

I'm seeing lots of Lament of Innocence references in the graphics discussion. This is good. I like the look of Lament of Innocence. LoI is actually my second-favorite Castlevania game after Symphony of the Night. Has anyone made comments about how the cinematics/cutscenes will be handled? I hope they do it with the in-game engine. Either make it like Symphony of the Night where the character in-game models stop to converse with dialog boxes overhead or make it like Lament of Innocence where the in-game models are used in 3D cutscenes. I really hope it doesn't have Miriam displayed in an anime style during the cutscenes (i.e. over-sized eyes, mouth-open, leaning forward yells (Phoenix Wright style), etc). I actually like some anime, but it seems out of place for Bloodstained. It can look too cartoony. I feel like the Portrait of Ruin intro (for example) makes Charlotte look like something out of Phoenix Wright. I don't think IGA will go down this road with Bloodstained, but, this is the kind of thing Bloodstained should avoid:

You know what's a good middle ground between cartoony and gritty gothic? Ultimate Ghosts N Goblins for PSP ( obviously with the better tech of today it'd be a nice middle approach ( but with more realistic character models) This hits the nail on the head. It's vibrant, it's cartoony sure but it's gritty and very detailed. That doesn't mean it has to have a realistic grit to it they could do cel shaded for all I care. I'm just saying I feel like the environment in the pic is too simple and sterile looking, this shows something that isn't sterile looking. Watch video and let me know what you guys think. Obviously i'm not saying they should make everything SQUISHED looking, I'm purely talking aesthetic. I actually think this looks pretty good while still being hyper-colorful.

Redogan I could have sworn they mentioned how they were handling cutscenes but I don't want to give out misinformation. I'm hoping I am just thinking of something else where they said they were doing them in the manner in which nobody wants it to be done.

We had a topic (and a poll I believe) discussing how we'd like the cutscenes here, but I don't remember anything from the team about it.
castledan, I think LordKaiser was probably referring more to the mention of Mirror of Fate.
Ultimate GnG is not a bad example. And lol, I don't think we have to worry about PoR anime expressions (sorry crocodile) in this game. They actually drew out several of Miriam's expressions in the concept art and I'm thinking they will stick to something close to those for showing her emotions in-game...probably quite similar to the old in-game portrait conversations. I think panning/zooming the camera when necessary to show something more dramatic/a cutscene would be great, or they could use separate scenes. I'd be fine with it either way.

One thing i hope doesn't happen is too much camera usage in the actual gameplay. It'll kill any semblance of a 2d feel that they might be going for. I think the best solution is to make it feel as 2d as possible. Zooms, panning, zooming out...
It'll ruin the feel of the game imo.

I know there's a lot of people that hate the Lords of Shadow games, but the art direction was pretty spectacular a lot of the time. Bloodstained is not a western-made or styled game though, so it should, and does, have a very different character. However. there's still plenty of things that the LoS games did that I would like to see a bit more of in Bloodstained. Namely, gothic mood and character. It has nothing to do with color and is independent of graphical style. Bloodborne is another Japanese-made game but with a very desaturated and decayed aesthetic. Certainly not the style Bloodstained is going for, but undoubtedly successful at achieving a great gothic feel. Mirror of Fate certainly had areas that were similarly desaturated, but it also didn't shy away from color and fantasy stylization. Some great art was created for that game. That first pic from Mirror of Fate is probably the closest in style to Bloodstained, though still far more western, naturally. However a similarly fairytale-esque approach for Bloodstained could be fun. But the thing I hope that translates is the gothic mood of these pics. Again, it's not about color or even art style. It has much more to do with shapes and light and shadow, and right now, judging only from those shader pics, Bloodstained is lacking in almost all of those areas.

I have to say that I loved the Lords of Shadow games. I agree that the gothic mood you describe is needed in Bloodstained.

I liked the first Lords of Shadow. IMO it's probably the best 3D Castlevania game, though CoD isn't far behind. Mirror of Fate was okay, though it was well below the Iga games. However, I hated Lords of Shadow 2.

Not to get too off topic, but I really liked the first LoS. Mirror of Fate needed about another year in the oven and it would have been another great entry in the 2Dvania catalogue, in my opinion. Definitely some focus and gameplay issues, but tons of promise. I liked about 40% of LoS 2. The stuff in the castle was fun, and I liked the idea of the castle being a creature sort of "possessing" its current master like a leech or something. And the castle existing outside of basic reality. Fun stuff. I REALLY liked the Alucard DLC. Best part of the game for me. But yeah, more than half of the actual game went in weird, not fun directions. I might be more forgiving if they did weird stuff that was at least fun to play, but nope. Oh well. The castle looked great and the dash was a super cool play on Alucard's dash from SotN. That was fun. haha.
Okay. End of digression.

crocodile Remember all those times I tried to explain what I wanted out of this game visually but couldn't get it across well? I used Lament of Innocence numerous times as an example but people still seemed confused for what i meant. Now I have examples I can actually use from this game itself. I kept using this image to say it needs a more textured and darker tone to the visuals, much more detail which will give it a less dollhouse ( yes I'm bringing the term back) look. What we got originally was something like this - It looked overly simple, which gives it a more cartoony, less threatening, less dark feel to it. It didn't hit that IGAVANIA tone I was hoping for..... BUT then something magical happened. The images they revealed today fixed my issues with the look instantly, and capture the vibe Lament Of Innocence has perfectly in a 2.5d space. Now people can see what I mean when I say a gritty, more textured, more dark, less cartoony feel. They nailed it. It's almost like Lament of Innocence is turned into a 2.5d game. Now I no longer have to try an explain myself, the bloodstained team explained it for me

The backgrounds have improved so much between the two shader updates. The new shaders feel like getting something I never knew I wanted.
I thought I would've been fine if the backgrounds looked the way they did in the first update, but looking at the originals now, I don't think I'd be able to go back to them. They feel like projects I would've given a C+ to and the new ones are an A+.
