The more I hear about this game. The more unintresting it gets. Do not get me wrong, I am sure it will be a good game but giving I do not see me being able to play the originals and I refuse to watch lets plays. I am not going to be that intrested in this. It seems to be way too in depth of story for me to completly enjoy it for what it is this late in the series. It would have been better if thr originals been on psn or whatever. It also feels like its a sequel thats been too late for the party. Its one thing to have remakes of originals or etc and then a new sequel but another to do it outta no where. I belive it alienates some people.
It also reminds me of the port of Mother as Earthbound Begginings. Still pisses me off that they do that now when we asked for it for years and years. Not only that, there is not going to be another sequel. Most of the Mother community also already emulated the game back in the day and beat it. Lol

So reports of Sony funding the game appear to be somewhat inaccurate. After watching this video and reading the recent interviews as well as the IAmA I linked above, it seems that Sony is providing marketing, not development funds. Yu did mention getting some support from here and there, but he also made it clear that the crowd funding is what will determine the scope of the game. |

I'm kind of glad they clarified that as it was pretty vague what Sony's involvement was and it means that there is now an outside shot that the game can be ported over to Xbox One & Wii U as well. Now they just need to improve their tiers (adding more options at the sub $100 level) so it'll get new backers as well as entice current backers at the $29 tiers or below to raise their pledge.

It has received an incredible amount of funding though, of course that's all thanks to their E3 coverage. Not enough funding though. It's pretty much a rule of video game Kickstarters that the minimum goal will only yield a bare bones result. It's the amount of money they need to produce a game, not the game they hope to make. According to Yu, $2M gets us a story-centric game, $5M will allow them to add a feature he really wants to put in the game, and $10M nets us the full open world experience. Granted, $10M is a pipe dream if he only goes through Kickstarter for development funds, but I think $5M is feasible if not a sure thing. What they really need to do is allow for PayPal donations and set up a page/campaign for post-KS contributions. Pillars of Eternity did that, and it seemed to have worked out for them. Star Citizen did as well, but they took it about a dozen steps further and pretty much instituted full on pre-ordered microtransactions. I can't argue with the result, but I don't know how Shenmue could do the same thing, and I really don't know if they should. The whole ambiguous Sony connection is already causing them problems enough. |

This is what I was saying earlier... E3 is a blessing and a curse. I mean it helps get the word out and all, but then it also puts you under a microscope right off the bat and everything you do is going to be judged. I think it might have been better for them if they had started the campaign earlier and had the E3 demo hit right before or during the final week.
Of course, as was the case with Bloodstained, you can't predict what's going to happen in those last two days. But their comments section IS indeed decidedly more quite than the Bloodstained comments section was. And the data on KickTraq bares that out.

Well to be fair, Bloodstained had probably the best handled Kickstarter I've ever seen. I know there are a lot of people that wanted more of Igarashi's specific style of Metroidvania, but I'd say that the amazing level of community engagement throughout the KS campaign is what drove it to the top spot in the video games category.
With Shenmue, Yu is trying, giving interviews, doing an IAmA on Reddit, etc. But frankly, this kind of intimacy between the developer and the fans isn't really something that is common among Japanese developers, and it shows. Yu really needed a competent manager for the KS campaign like IGA had.
Also, as I've mentioned before, there's a lot more excitement to be found in the kind of stretch goals you can squeeze out of an action platformer than the sort of thing you can expand upon in an open-city life simulator RPG. I mean, Yu is talking about future stretch goals like a forklift driving mingame. And you know what? That's really cool if you're already a fan of Shenmue and want to work a part time job in game like you could in the original. But for anyone else? Not so much.

I think now that the initial shock of it being announced is over, it'll peak and and then plateau, if it already hasn't. You said it was sort of flat now, and even with double funding the goals were less than stellar. Hopefully Sony steps in and helps them a bit, all I know is I'm glad I went with this one instead.

Yeah, WAY too optimistic.
Comparing the per-day contributions on Bloodstained and Shenmue 3, all of the momentum Shenmue had dropped dead and the curve completely flatlined. They'll probably break 4 million in the final day, but not much else.

That's a great graphic.  Back to the topic at hand, I said it before and I'll say it again. Well you do have to consider that because of the E3 hype that there was going to be a HUGE rush at the beginning because of how well that news carries. But the consequences of that may be that the press is TOO good and as a result everyone will get in at the beginning, the donations will plateau, and there may not be any huge spike/rush at the end. Or at least not as big of a spike/rush as there could have been. And then I said: Looks like I may be right.  |
