What's up peoples, I was thinking what kind of shards do you think there will be in Bloodstained... WARNING: This is only for shard predictions, this is not meant to be suggestions to the devs. They have enough on their plates (though if they want to check out shard powers/moves, then by all means, come on by). That is why I put this in "Bloodstained Discussions" not in "Game Feature Suggestions" section.
Ok what do you all think each shard will do? I personally wonder if the "water gun" power will make another appearance I would love to see Miriam make the finger gun and fire a water shot like Soma did in AoS... also I would love to see better visuals when it lvl's up.

The shards will depend on the enemies who drop them... Makes me wonder how the developers approach the design.... Invent a shard power for Miriam and then design the monster around it, or design the monster first and then figure out the shard power... Hmmmm....

My personal take is, I believe Iga and his team will take the best "souls" from the AoS and DoS and spin it for Miriam... but I doubt they will just be recycled souls to shards. I think it will be familiar but new... I just read my comment, and I don't think really I said anything lol... well in the demo the only soul that seemed familiar was Buer, where his shard raises constitution. so what do I know lol.

Interesting thought, cecil-kain . I never thought about it like that. Huh, it really does make you wonder. I think there will be a soul that drains life from the enemy like the Succubus soul or Persephone's soul. It would probably come from any sort of vampiric creature. I also think, for some reason, that there will be a soul that allows Miriam to "steal" certain things from the enemies she hits. Unlikely, but a prediction is a prediction.

As I said in a previous post, I strongly prefer tactical shards, simply due to how practical they are, and how often I find myself using them. (Regenerate HP, eat inedible food, ETC.) Thought I must also say that Familiars were a cool part of Circle of the Moon that I enjoyed.
One idea is I wonder if there will be transformation shards. Not like the devil soul in AoS, I'm talking about the Pluto/Black dog combination in Circle of the Moon that turned you into a skeleton. Something like that would be super cool. Order of Ecclesia included this a little bit, with the Arma Felix Glyph.

Similar to how a killer clown would allow the player to weaponize playing cards, I would like to see an artist type creature that allows Miriam create a physical barrier of ink using a paintbrush. It could even poison enemies it contacts. It's a big castle after all and I bet Gebel would want help decorating the walls with portraits.

Although we are already getting Familiars, I would still love to see something like the Manticore Tail or the Great Armor from Dawn of Sorrow: an entity or appendage that attacks as you do. Aria had one as well (it even shouted ORA ORA ORA to make the Jojo nod as blunt as possible). A Stand. I admit it: I want just one ability in this game to give Miriam a Stand XD. "That is why, Gebel, I will judge you myself, WITH MY FAMILIAR!" Attachments:

Since we have 360 aiming with magic in the game. I would like more breath attacks. Fire, Stone, Acid, Frost, etc. It would be cool to be able to have a pseudo-flamethrower. We can even use the frost-breath to freeze water while aiming down inform of Miriam.

Hearkens back to stuff like the Ice Arrows from older Zelda games.

That means it would be great for hiding stuff in plain sight.

Let me add my two cents here =)
The Shard System is obviously based on Soul Dominance, wich is a good thing. IGA said it that the Soul Dominance was the best gameplay system he and his team ever did, and he even said that Dawn of Sorrow was born with the idea of reusing that system, because "it was too good to use it on a single game". And he was totally right.
Seeing a revamped "get enemies powers to use against them" system for Bloodstained is a good thing. Now, into the Shards predictions.
TRIGGER
The trigger shard, usable by pressing a single button, is our basic, projectile magic. Considering past Igavania games, we can bet that most Triggers will be simple, one-shot projectiles like fire balls, ice lances and things like that, some weapon throws to make a nostalgic old-school Castlevania feeling, like throwing knives, axes and such. We can also bet that it will have more "summon" triggers, like Cast Amy Trigger Shard on Demo, where you summon a demon and that demon goes attacking. They can also throw few unortodox powers here, like summoning a music, or maybe luring enemies with dolls or something.
EFFECTIVE
We still don't know how Effective Shards will be used, since the Demon didn't had a single one, but we can guess, considering how the others worked and how games with similar systems, like the Sorrow series and Order of Ecclesia, worked on their on magic sytems. I think Effective Shards will work like a on/off magic, like Guardian Souls on Sorrow series / Red Glyphs on Order of Ecclesia. You activate it with a button (probably a trigger button) and deactivate it by pressing it again. Or you hold the button to use it. IF i am right, we can guess that they will mostly be magical barriers, small summons that aren't really familiars (like summoning a demon close to you that attacks when you attack) and stats-changing temporary boosts. This Shard can also be used for progression abilities, like flying or powers to traverse areas.
DIRECTIONAL
Directional Shards, that you use by aiming with right analog and shooting it with a button, a really nice, tactical addition. Considering what we saw, i bet that we will have others "breath" powers from all elements, like Fire Cannon, and this Shard will most probably be used for tactical gameplay, where the power changes depending on how and where you aim it. I have a feeling that we could see a grabbing whip of sorts, to move around the castle, throwing a rope or whip on some places to shake yourself and go further. That would sure be awesome!
ENCHANT
Enchant Shards are the "safe" Shards for the dev team. Like the Souls of the same name on Sorrow series, anything that they CAN'T think of a power for a enemy, just add it here, due to how easy it is. Expect boosts for all stats, elemental boosts, gameplay-changing shards (that let you freeze yourself on air, or dodge projectiles, increase dropping chance, material dropping chance for forging, and such).
FAMILIAR
That is pretty much self-explanatory. We still don't know how familiars will work. Maybe you have a button to summon or (wich i think it would be much easier) you just equip one at Familiar Shard and it shows up automatically. We can expect more familiars than Symphony of the Night, with specific roles like Attacking, healing, shielding, boosting, finding secrets and such.

I hope most shards are usable in the air. Souls like the Biphron, and weapons like the crossbow in PoR are useless if you can't use while jumping. If I remember correctly Juste could use Aural blast in the air.... But Jonathan couldn't?

I was kicking around an idea in my head and I wanna share... what do you guys think of broken shards or shard pieces? what if really powerful moves, spells, transformations etc... can only be obtained if you find these shards and use alchemy to fuse them together... so what do you think? I think it will bring a whole new dimension to shard collecting. Collecting shard pieces (which implies these would all be non-functional until you got all the materials together) sounds less fun than just using normal shards to craft into more powerful shards. I mean since you can collect multiples of a shard anyway, this gives you another thing you can do with them aside from maybe crafting weapons and items. I'd have to assume these craftable super-shards would have to give you optional (not needed to beat the game) powers though.

1. I agree with Pure Miriam about the "Effective" slot. I fully expect "buff" skills like Winestaind and Magic Throne to appear here, as well as "Stance" powers like Jonathan to either tank hits or buff specific stats temporarily. The only power from the concept art I still cant figure is the Voltaic Chain. It really seems like an Item Crash or the Dual Crush powers from the Belmont days and Ecclesia, respectively. 2. I agree with Croc here. Making us collect shards of crystals to make into the crystals would be too much "busywork" in-between the player finding out a power exists and then needing to hit up google. Finding the Crystals ready to use is simple and still has PLENTY of "go find the secret room with the chest or enemy" gameplay to keep people hunting without making it more complicated.

And most likely not upgradeable (or at lest not though in the traditional sense). It just gives us completionists something more to look for... I think these shards are maybe only found in a second run through or even a third run through of the game. One for each slot (Trigger, Effective, Directional, Enchant, Familiar... and maybe a spell if they have those)... something that could brake the game... it will be hard to get so it will be worth it when you get it. Examples (all non-existing shards as far as I know) of a whole functioning shard could be: - Trigger -Neutron Star- a move that summons a bit of energy from a neutron star that kills enemies in a large blast.
- Effective -Black hole- summon a black hole to suck up enemies... you can keep the black hole open as long as you have magic.
- Directional -Swarm- release a swarm or demon insects from your hand... they eat everything except bones.
- Familiar -Special- summon Bismark Kappa The 3rd or Iga himself.
I think it will be a fun mini quest for those who want more from the game... in reality I just want some non-traditional shards that you have to work for.

There is another thing to consider: online balance. If there are indeed very special powers that need, essentially, a lengthy collect-a-thon side-quest to track down, assemble and forge, and the justification for said depth is that the powers are crazy strong, you run into the issue of everyone nabbing those powers to use online, thus stagnating the online outside of people who either dont know how to get them or people who explicitly avoid using them due to how powerful they are.
Now, a very easy solution to that problem would be to disable those powers when entering multiplayer, but telling people they cant use their big gun because its not fair to the other players can frustrate even the people who aren't out to stomp people and ruin their days. "I did all this work for these uber shards and now I cant use them?"
The idea of there being a set of uber-powers that turn Miriam into a goddess of destruction is certainly appealing from a "I'm as strong as the game gets" completion feeling. Aria of Sorrow has this via the: Claihm Solais, Eversing/Dracula's Tunic, Chaos Ring setup being the best and thus you get that "this is Soma at his strongest" feeling, and it feels good.
But the existence of online multiplayer is a very new and delicate consideration. I'm sure we all remember Harmony of Despair. Great game, I love it a lot, but it just turned into YatsuSoma, BlenderCard and the occasional Spike Boot/Berserker armor Belmont. I just dont want that to happen to Bloodstained too.
