I'm actually happy with how close the camera is. I have a 19 inch flat screen and games like UnEpic and Tera have their text defaulted at way too small of a size for me to read without pressing my face against the tv, or in Tera's case, just adjusting the window sizes. What I'm getting at is even though we have the technology to allow it I don't think that necessarily means we should. As I think about it though I'm going to have to watch the video this discussion relates to on my tv and possibly change my stance on the matter afterwards.
Edit: After watching the video again, this time on a TV, I can see where the complaints are coming from: Miriam does look big. To my knowledge, though, handheld Igavanias had the camera distance match very closely to the size of one tile of the map and that may be holding true too for Bloodstained. This can be a hard thing to resolve while maintaining a 2D feel to the game because if we simply just zoom the camera out then there must be a way to make that work for any corridors that are only one tile high or vertical climbs that are one tile wide.

cool about the possibility of settable extra zooms, if bg interactivity and secrets are a thing being able to zoom in real close and see all the cool details or out where mars likes could be a thing and i hope it gets a bit of testing ^_^

the answer here is rather simple, and no I haven't read all of the comments so far. in my current project, "APART", the camera will move closer and farther from the player depending on what room they are in. in claustrophobic areas, I tend to heve the camera pretty close, and this is inverted in wide open outdoor areas where the camera takes a back seat, but not far enough to obscure the scene.

How did I miss this thread.
Anyway. First off, this is a 2.5d game, not a 2d one, so frankly I think it would be a waste to not allow the player to adjust the zoom level in a smooth manner. You could do it in harmony of despair even, so why not this game? Though I imagine the zoom level is adjusted for the player to see as far as possible without a "dollhouse" look.
Regardless, if zoom is not a feature, I think it would make an excellent cheat code unlock after beating the game. MYbe even the camera angle too. Playing in an over the shoulder view would be dumb for a first play, but if you beat the gamr like 8 times, it would prob be an interesting challenge.
That said, I like games hard but i dont think limited camera angles really add difficulty in a smooth manner. "Surprise motherfucker" is indeed the point where it adds difficulty. I think there is a very sharp and sudden difficulty curve for attacks or projectiles in terms of viewing element, to the point where it doesnt exist beyond fair or cheap.
I thought the zoom levels of what we have seen is fine though, no complaints.
