Seriously? Cross-platform multiplayer is feasible now? This is something I've wanted to see happen for years, but I'm still trying to overcome this sense of disbelief I have from thinking Microsoft and Sony would never be okay with it. "They do move in herds."

Bout damn time, it was feasible when multiplayer stopped being on ms/sony servers and was hosted by the game company, at that point it was just the consoles not playing nice
Just hope eso joins in, i hate that my xbone copy doesnt have the event mounts my pc copy does >.>

It's always been possible before, MS has just been stingy about it. FFXIV has had Playstation and PC users for a while now on the same servers. Same with Phantasy Star Online 2. Square has expressed interest in launching FFXIV on other platforms, but they wouldn't have been able to connect the x-box server to the base server until now.

I always thought cross-play had to do more with console hardware issues and PCs being easier to work with/around than other consoles. How long have multiplayer servers been hosted by game companies and not Sony or Microsoft? Since the 360/PS3 days?

there are a few reasons why a dev would still choose not to do cross platform, from pairing up a controller player with a mouse/keyboard player in an fps (rekt), to running console specific servers simply because theyre already running mutiple servers anyway and only having one server/console interface per server instead of 2/3 takes up less space (makes sense), to not knowing how to handle conflicting usernames (pita without forcing people to make a second login specific to the game company)
the biggest obstacle by far has been ms and sony, their business model pretty much didnt allow for it because why allow someone to buy one copy of the game and play with someone who has the competing console when you can force them into goading your friends into buying an xbox/ps so you can play with them (actually the only reason i even have an xbone, i went through like 3 360s that all rrod on me and all the exclusives eventualy make it to pc anyway), this is actually a huge reason why couch coop has pretty much been brutally murdered and stuffed into a wood chipper with the new gen, it 'encourages' more console, sub, and game sales
but as far as the actual servers go, the difference between online game servers is negligible, its the interface that handles the data stream that may be different, and even then it may not be different by much if the data translation is done on the console side as opposed to on the server side, it may be more feasible now with the use of megaservers but its nearly always been possible

If I'm right, Final Fantasy 11 connected players from PS2, Xbox (regular), and PC.

IIRC, FF11 had a shared userbase with players from PS2 and Xbox, but the 360 version was separate and it never came out on the original Xbox.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure they became stricter from 360 onwards. Games not being on the original X-Box were probably for other reasons I guess. But maybe they were always strict.

Yeah, I did. But I don't think Microsoft became stricter from 360 onwards, but rather, stayed as strict as they always did. The only time I remember a Microsoft console having cross-platform multiplayer was the Shadowrun FPS, but it didn't sell well and PC players pretty much dominated console players due to mouse and keyboard accuracy.
