So I figure we have a little fun here. We list off our first Castlevania game, as well as our absolute favorites, and then we list the reasons as to what we liked about them. I'll go first.

I'd have to go with Super Casltevania lV. As the Nerd so eloquently put it, it felt like you were in control of everything. I went back later on and played the other games that proceeded it. They were good, but never have I felt so sure about every move that I made.

My first was Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest. If I didn't have Nintendo Power there was no way I could have "beat" that game. Really all I ended up doing was entering a code that gave me most of the items. The game gets a lot of hate, but I loved it. I just was probably too young to really have a chance at completing it properly.
My fandom for Castlevania hit a whole new level when I played SotN though. I missed the game when it came out because that was the year I graduated High School, and I had a lot going on. Later when I was running a D&D group, one of my players was surprised that I was a Castlevania fan but had only played some of the older games. I went an got SotN on the Xbox Live Arcade and went nuts over it. I then made a pen and paper game for Castlevania that picked up where Lament left off (I just read the plot, I have never played that game). I used the 3.5 ed release of Ravenloft as a kind of guide mixed with a set of rules called Grim Tales. It is my 2nd favorite campaign that I've ever ran and I still talk to all the players even though I haven't DMed in a couple of years.
Anyways, after I finished SotN I went Castlevania crazy and played every Iga game except the 3D ones. I really like Super Castlevania IV. Before SotN that was the best. I didn't play Rondo until it was remade for PSP. I should note I haven't played Circle of the Moon, but that wasn't Iga anyway. I will probably post all the games I have played and a comment for each one later, but I gotta hit the sack!

Many people consider the PSP version a destroyed port that captured very little of the intended essence of the original. I always wondered what the Japanese-esque Castlevania was like for the DS. what was it called, "Dawn of Sorrow"? It had an interesting cover within a cover.

Ok, I backed bloodstained for 200$ so I'm dedicated to the series.
And the reason I'm saying this is because I didn't play any castlevania until very recently (aria of sorrow on the Wii U, which emulate the gba version) and to be fair the only reason why is because I always thought it was that platformer game of the nes era (there's a lot of games that are simply too old for me to enjoy) that was a platformer in which you get a wobbly woobly whip, shat controls and no character evolution except the rotation in the subweapons (plus Belmont family seemed far less interesting to follow than Dracula (or relatives) itself), so I stuck with that idea. Than my older brother who had a ps3 had me play symphony of the night. Well fuck me, the game had everything to keep me hooked. But then I never got it to play again since it wasn't my own. Then I saw a let's play of aria of sorrows and decide to buy it since it's on the wii u store, so it's really the only one I played and become near to finish it, but some kind of corruptions keeps me from actually finishing it (Many MANY game freezes past a certain point). So yeah, Aria of sorrows for the win, soul system rocks.
I'll probably give SotN another shot soon in order to actually know it better since it's a favorite for what is seems a lot of backers

I believe the first Castlevania game I actually played through was Bloodlines for the Genesis (it's an awesome game and my second favorite Castlevania game), prior to that my only exposure to the series was watching a friend play a Castlevania game (Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse to be exact) for the NES. As for my favorite Castlevania game, well that would have to be Symphony of the Night, which I first rented from Blockbuster (this was summer 98 and I had gotten a PS1 for Christmas the year before) for a weekend and later that year got it as a Christmas gift from my Grandparents. I enjoy playing this game so much that I own three versions of it (my original PS1 game which I've held onto even though it sadly no longer works, the PSOne Classics/PSN version, and the XBLA version) and have completed it numerous times as both Alucard & Richter, heck I even have all the XBLA achievements for the game. Note: I no longer actively play on XBL which is why I didn't include an XBL gamertag in the online play thread.

My first castlevania game was "Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest". I watched my brothers play it when I was (I think) 4-5 years old, and it scared the shit out of me for some reason.
When it comes to a favorite though, I want to say Rondo of Blood, or SoTN, but it's very difficult for me to pick one over the other, since they both have amazing music, along with the other games in the series. Dawn of Sorrow, OoE, PoR, are all awesome to me.
So I guess my favorite is "Castlevania: Harmony of Dispair" since it combines all of those games into an online game that deserved a lot more stages and items. Really would've loved a higher difficulty, too.

My first Castlevania was Castlevania for the NES. It was one of those impossible games I could never beat as a kid. The difficulty ramps up in the second level when the Medusa heads start coming your way, and if you manage to get past those somehow, in the third area you're met with even more Medusa heads.
Life wasn't kind back then.
My next Castlevania game and favorite is Symphony of the Night. I had decided not to subject myself to such torment for a while. I kept an eye on the series somewhat but never got invested in it. Even after SotN came out it took me a few years before I picked it up. I really only took an interest in it when I started to see YouTube videos of it and heard the famous quote from the beginning of the game.
I still have yet to get into the rest of the series, but I'm a minor fan of the occult, so the series is still somewhat familiar to me. I still plan on getting into all the GBA titles, but other games get in the way at the moment.

I do have a favorite but i would like to say all the 2d ones first since i can play any 2d castlevania any day of the week, but since i have to pick one it will be simons quest since it was the game i have the most fond memories playing. I used to go to my cousins house every friday(almost every)we would watch old movies, play games and have a good time. Well one of those times we played nes for one weekend but not only that we opened up every nintendo power of the nes era, i watched my cousin play castlevania 2 and beat the game using NP issue 2 it was great but i never played it for long that weekend since i sucked at it at the time.

Technically, the first Castlevania I played was Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, but I don't really count that because it was just an afternoon at a friend's house and I didn't get very far. So my first real Castlevania experience was Castlevania: The Adventure on Game Boy. It was one of five games I owned for the system(along with Metroid 2, Link's Awakening, FF Legend 3 and Tetris), and the first Castlevania I played to completion. I did enjoy it at the time, but I think I would find it too limiting to revisit. My favorite Castlevania is Symphony of the Night. Some of Igarashi's games that came after were better designed, but I've never been a huge handheld gamer, so I still prefer his first. That and the music is absolutely incredible, and the limited sound palette of the following games could never measure up(though I still like them for what they are). Soma Cruz from the Sorrow games is probably my favorite Castlevania protagonist though. Having that inner struggle(insofar as it's actually shown in game) helped give him a bit more depth than a lot of Castlevania protagonists.

My first Castlevania was the original for the NES. I never could get very far in the original when I was younger and I still can't beat the game with out cheats of some sort. But where as I used to be lucky to pass the second level, I can usually get to The Monster or Death on a pretty regular basis, but they still give me trouble.
As far as favorite of the series? The PC Engine version of Rondo of Blood ALL THE WAY! That game took the multiple path element that was in CV3 and brought it to a whole new level. The game may have been a "linear" style game but it played a lot like an open world game. With that, the new sub-weapons, THE ITEM CRASHES (OMG!!!), the HUGE diversity in enemies, and ESPECIALLY 100% the detail in the art and decorations and how much stuff was just there to make the game look cool. Rondo WAS the spring board that led to SotN. That was the game where the idea of all that cool extra stuff that was in SotN came from as well as a large portion of the art and the enemies.

Well, I'll admit it's not actually Castlevania, but the first game in the genre that I played was Metroid Prime. Favorite game in the genre so far is actually Prime 2.
As far as my introduction to the Castlevania series? I'd heard some of the music from IWBTG, having watched a play through, and simply loved Bloody Tears and Dance of Illusions. More recently, I watched a bit of ProtonJon's LP or Aria of Sorrow, and now I'm hyped to give the games a try for myself.

The first I ever played was Simon's Quest. I never did beat it, but I also remember reading a little novella that had a boy from our world get trapped in the Castlevania world to help Simon with the whole quest.
The first game that got me completely hooked on the series was SoTN. Unfortunately, I no longer own the game and have no way of playing it. However, my absolute favorite of the series would have to be Dawn of Sorrow.

My first was Castlevania for NES. Memories are faded since it was long ago and I didn't have much time to play it. Then came Super Castlevania IV. Had a good time with it and enjoyed the whip controls. After that.....the holy grail SotN which is my fav so far. I never tire of playing it and hearing it's amazing soundtrack.
I'm gonna get my Wii U fired up eventually and play through all it has to offer and then go for the DS titles.

Well... my first game was Super Castlevania IV from SNES, I love that game, also I have played and beat Simon's Quest without any guide or something, but it took me like a month to beat it XD! When I got my PSOne I did playe SotN but I didn't like it at all, but after so many attemps I did like it, just like the other "Igavanias". BUT my first favorite Castlevania game was: Lament of Innocence Yeeeaaah.... I have played and beat/finish lot of Castlevania games, but Lament of Innoncence is one the games that I can play multiple times in a year (with Curse of Darkness, Super Castlevania IV and SotN) because it's awesome, the story of the very first Belmont, the connection with Dracula and the creation of the Vampire Killer was unique, the gameplay was different from the other ones, but I did like the exploration and the quick combat style of the game (hack&slash), a very interesting and amazing OST (House of Sacred Remains and Leon's Theme FTW!) And... yeah, that's my first favorite Castlevania game (but not the only one, eh?). Probably I'm gonna do a LP of it on my channel, I haven't play that game in months!! XD!

My fist Castlevania, was the one on the NES, but like Jim already said, it was for me a kid unbeatable, well it still is.. but once upon a night I loaded an emulated version on my psp and got so my revenge (thanx to Quick Save/Load ^^)
My true IGAVANIA career started with Simon's Quest, strangely I was totaly able to beat it, with a little help from a guide book, but without cheating.. something I'm totaly proud of! I loved the RPG Elements of that Game.. then with Castlevania 3 I found again a big rock hard to swallow, but at least I was able to play till Dracula's Castle.
After that, my desire to play Castlevania Games was lost for a while.. a dozen of years later, a Penpal sent me a copy of SotN, which he highly recommended. Well I tried it.. and when the music started the first time (After Alucard's got weakened) I found something, I never though I was ever searching for.. the ultimate epiphany, which has been continued through every game listed in my Profile (meanwhile I own them all as an original copy) ^^ My most beloved Castlevania.. can't say for sure. I think the mix from SotN, A/DoS and OoE (Shanoa is my favorite Char, followed by Alucard and Soma)

The first I played was the first. But I didn't own it, rather I borrowed it from my next door neighboor like a dozen times. I did in fact beat it as a kid back then because I had it so often though. I never did try 2. Castlevania 3 was the first castlevania I personally owned. I even remember seeing an ad for it in the newspaper... like the actual black and white newspaper newspaper, not a magazine or tabloid or whatever.
I never really got into super castlevania 4, I can see how the control is great and such but... I dunno. It just felt like it had nothing over 3 other than greater esthetics due to SNES hardware.
So my first is both 1 and 3. 1 was the first I played and beat, 3rd was the first I personally owned.
Curse of darkness is probably my fave though, I just wish that the art and background was as good as lament of innocence, instead it gets kinda ruined by frequent copy paste hallways and rooms.

Akumajou Dracula X - Gekka no Yasoukyoku AKA Symphony of the Night.
Played the original JP version translated into English. More accurate translation(better than DXC's), and two extra familiars.

I believe my first was Castelevania 2 on NES, but my favorite has to be SotN.
I will give an Honorary Mention to Lords of Shadows. While it wasn't a classic or igavania style, it was good in its own right.

I barely played any except for X68000 one simply called, Akumajō Dracula. Yeah I emulated that game and I had fun with it. PSX owners played that similar game under Castlevania Chronicles.
