Upcoming Netflix re-imagining of Voltron from Del ToroAlright... So I LOVED Voltron as a kid. I still want to watch Go Lion, but haven't. I consider Voltron my first anime even though the plot is apparently very different from the Japanese Go Lion series. This was the first cartoon where I saw someone killed. It showed blood. They were dead for good after that. It really kicked my love of cartoons up a whole bunch. There were some things I loved more than Voltron like He-Man, G.I. Joe, and Transformers, but Voltron was up there for me like Thunder Cats. The toys were really expensive so I didn't have any of the lions, but my Grandmother bought me a large fully assembled plastic Voltron that had a wired control to it and it would roll around. I had some of the cars from the crappy second Voltron, but that's not the same. I was excited when I found out there were actually some other 3D cartoons already made for it, but watching them was a big disappointment. I expected something more anime like, but it was really just a kids show. Anyways, Del Toro and Voltron... OH YEAH, bring it!  I read this poorly written article wrong. Del Toro isn't involved in Voltron.

I have a few cartoons on VHS tapes. Thundercats, Silverhawks, and Voltron.
The opening music for Voltron always got me excited. I can't recall the words at the moment but I'd always speak along to the opening dialogue. If you consider Voltron to be an anime then it was my first. After that it would probably have to go to Escaflowne.
Those cartoons back in the day really cemented me into the idea that "cartoons aren't just for kids" even though I was a kid. They dealt with violence, kidnappings, forced marriages, death and the undead. Although I didn't know just HOW deep Anime would come to be, I still think Voltron is a part of who I am, especially since one of my all time favorite genres is Mecha.
I'm always a bit wary of any new things having to do with Voltron as they don't seem to capture what I loved about it. I'm not sure if my family has a Netflix sub active right now but if so I may try to catch it.

I haven't watched any Voltron shows, but I do want to see the upcoming Netflix series just because I like robots.
How well does the original series hold up?

It depends on how much you expect from it. As much as I love Voltron it's really hard to watch at this point. Out of all those old cartoons Thundercats has probably aged the best. It doesn't help that the story was improvised in a lot of ways due to censorship, but at the same time I don't think I could take any other version.
If we had gotten this, even in English, I don't think Voltron would be what it is today.
I don't necessarily like censorship, but I really think the localization team at least sorta knew what they were doing and what the American audience wanted.

Yeah... It doesn't hold up. It sticks to a formula pretty closely. Back then reusing segments of animation was cheap and common. If you have seen one you have seen most of them.
I could probably watch Go Lion! though

I just got around to watching the first episode. It's better than I could have hoped for. I'm SO into this. I just... hope they don't kill Lance this time. I really like his character. When I was a kid, Lance's death was the first cartoon death I had ever seen and it really changed the way I saw cartoons. It was the first time I saw blood in a cartoon, let alone killing off a main character. They really play up Lance as a likable character in this new version. He's my favorite. Apparently the toy I had as a kid sells for $300 now.  |

Loved the original Voltron, such a big part of my childhood (looks reminiscently into the distance as a single tear rolls down cheek). in short it was awesome back then.. I binge watched the show and I thought it was cool but different I thing if you watch the show wanting the same Voltron... you won't get it. but if you want a story of Voltron with many homages to the original. The show is great, with smart writing... I think any Voltron fan could fall in love with it.
The thing I really miss though is the combination speech: "Form feet and legs! Form arms and body! And, I'll form the head!"
