The new Star Wars movie is out this weekend. Anyone seen it so far? I enjoyed it a lot. I liked the cinematography, thought the actors had good chemistry with each other, and how most of the story was about clueless people trying to find out what to do. The only things that really bothered me felt kinda nitpicky, but also spoiler-ish at the same time. More detailed observations (these contain major spoilers). -The First Order Stormtroopers felt much more organized and tactical than the Episode 4-6 Stormtroopers. They felt like an actual military and came off as a threat!
-I really liked Kylo Ren. The scene where he caught the blaster bolt in mid-air looked really cool and left a great first impression, but I found his attitude and behavior more interesting. He throws tantrums, he's insecure, he's all bark and no bite, people don't respect him... it's as if prequel movie Anakin was done right!
-I loved the banter between Finn and Poe at the beginning. Great bonding moment. I would've liked to have seen Poe play a more substantial role.
-I found it kinda suspicious that Poe just left Jakku without trying to find BB-8 or checking on Finn after they crashed. Hmm...
-Rey kinda reminded me as a mix between Charlie Bucket (poor person trying to scrape by and BB-8 is her golden ticket) and Bastila Shan (pole/staff weapon, force user, similar outfit).
-Finn felt like Kyle Katarn (former Stormtrooper helping the good guys) combined with Kimmy Schmidt (raised in a cult and now discovering the world).
-The sloppy movement in the lightsaber duel between Rey and Kylo Ren reminded me of the animations in the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games.
-Thank you Harrison Ford, for not being in "paycheck mode" like most of your movies since 2000 and actually acting. I like to pretend he did Episode 7 for free and work up on set every morning thinking "Oh boy, I hope this is the day Larwence Kasdan and I finally kill Han Solo! We've been waiting for this since Empire Strikes Back, but now I get to make fanboys cry!"
-I'm not too bothered by how a lot of the movie felt like a remix of the original Star Wars (Episode 4) since there was plenty of interesting camera work and enough new stuff to go with it. How a story is told is more important than the story itself, but I'd rather see Episodes 8 and 9 do their own thing instead of heavily borrow story elements from the other movies.
-The only thing in the movie that really bothered me was when General Hux was giving the speech and he fired the Starkiller Base. At first I was thought "Oh, they're going full Nazi and saying bad guy things", but then they fired the laser and blew up a star system and I was totally confused. I thought the Resistance and the First Order were the only two factions in the movie and they were just the Rebellion and the Empire with new names, but the New Republic was a thing? And was that supposed to be Coruscant that got blown up? The scene looked kinda cool, but I was also kinda lost and had no idea what was going on. It felt like the movie was trying to make me feel sad emotions that weren't there. I have a hunch all this is fleshed out in the books and comics, but I shouldn't have to read them in order to understand what was going on. I would've rather seen General Hux's speech last a minute longer and explain what the whole deal with the First Order, New Republic, and Resistance was instead of cutting straight to him shouting "The New Republic's Senate lied to us! We will kill them with our Death Star Forge, and then we are going to kill Mufasa and Simba! Be prepared!"
-Finn going unconscious and Rey leaving at the end felt kinda weird. I would've liked to have seen them have one last conversation before they both go separate ways.

I just saw this tonight. Major spoilers ahead. Overall I really enjoyed it. I think it's great. I'm really tired right now, but I will throw at few things out here.
I'm glad he wasn't Darth Ren, because he doesn't deserve the title. This dude was defeated by level 1 noobs, and this guy was the opposing force that put Luke into solitude?
A planet sized weapon? It uses the power of a star? This is stretching my science fiction suspension of belief a bit. Another movie, another death star plot.
Never leave the bad guy alive. Ever. Hey, fly over there and let me shoot this guy real quick or somethin... you know, the asshole that killed your best friend is over there ready for you to rip his arms off and beat him to death with them.
My friend made a case that he missed the space opera feel, but I don't mind a movie mostly based on action, excellent visuals and world display, and a crap ton of callbacks to the old films.
Is Rey a Skywalker? Jedi sure don't have issues with abandoning kids on desert planets if that's the case.
Luke didn't have a speaking role.
I know that episodes 1-3 have issues... but the light saber battles were the best in the series, and Darth Maul is still the coolest Sith. Maybe after some more training we can expect to see some Drizzt Do'Urden looking stuff.
The Falcon... takes a lickin, keeps on tickin.
Jon Boyega looked like Taylor Lautner and Levar Burton mashed up.
R2D2, why did you wake up? What triggered that?
Old dude at the beginning with the map, who the heck are you? Am I not remembering someone important from the films?
Kylo Ren is throwing a fit? Just walk away, Storm Troopers... oh they actually did. Is this Spaceballs? Instead of showing that maybe the dark side is the passionate side of the force that uses anger, it just made a joke out of it and makes this dude seem like a bitch. I hope the next movie has him playing the part of a failure trying to cope with what he has done and what he couldn't do, and introduces a replacement villain. Rey cut his ass deep with the -you just mad cuz you ain't Vader *mic drop* and from that point on he lost any potential as a bad ass. Plus, I don't like that helmet.

Abrams definitely knew what he was doing. I was really skeptical of everything at first, and I used to roll my eyes at BB-8 and Ren's new Saber, but they've grown on me. The music gave me chills! Rey, Ren, and the Resistance (hmm...) all had easily recognizable melodies, and the Resistance Fanfare playing when the X-Wings arrived was amazing. A perfect triumphant scene to play equally triumphant and epic music.
I guess it's because I set my expectations so low I was easily wowed by everything, but I really liked the movie.

It was the little things that count as far as this movie. Best Harrison Ford performance in a VERY long time. I'm thinking Rey's weapon should evolve. Be like a lightspear or a lightstaff to keep with the weapon specialization.
I loved ALL of the light saber duels and the fact that they didn't whip them out until very late in the movie. Gave them weight. And speaking of weight, let's go back to those duels. Genuine tension as 3 inexperienced saber users go at it with a few opponents reminded me of Empire Strikes Back's final duel. The duel between Rey and Kylo Ren especially reminded me of Return of the Jedi's final duel. The mutual anger and weight to each strike rather than being stale choreography. I mean there was SOME choreography with that one, but it also felt a lot more human.
I'm really hopping Finn doesn't completely abandon using a saber. He's got potential, but the deck was obviously stacked. I don't mind him becoming solely a gunslinger though. I loved ALL of the gun fights in this movie. The Storm Troopers were....get this, ACTUALLY HITTING THINGS with their aim. If that doesn't blow your mind as it is, then let me ask you something. Do you like tactics? That's what you will get when you witness the First Order.
One thing that bothered me was that they seemed extremely scared of boring people in this movie. Everyone is running...ALL the time. That's an Abrams staple, I know, but I was only ok with Star Trek and I hated the sequel for stuff like this and one aspect that is MISSING in this movie that I will get to. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that this is Star Wars! My favorite parts of the original trilogy were the slower parts with Ben Kenobi or especially with Yoda or them just hanging out on the Falcon. The thing that's missing? Lens Flare. THANK CHRIST. I can actually SEE the movie. Let's keep this up shall we?
Hopefully in the next movie, which is being directed by the same person as the one for Looper and Brick, will remember this. Slow does not necessarily have to mean boring. I enjoyed it more than the prequels, but not quite as much as the original trilogy. Though now that the ground work is laid, they have every opportunity to improve and make it special. Also this was my first opening night in a long while. Kind of wish I had a date...but being able to bro out with my friends about various things Star Wars including the now gone expanded universe, I just have never done that on one so that's much better in the end.

In response to some of the spoilers mentioned by Dragon_of_Dojima : I would like Rey's lightsaber to be a double-bladed one like Darth Maul's since she's already familiar with using a staff-like weapon, but I'd like to keep specialty lightsabers to a minimum. Keep it simple. Kylo Ren's crossguard was kinda neat since it was a little thing. The old expanded universe went overboard with them (e.g. Darth Plageius's spear saber, Maris Brood's twirly billy club sabers) and the new Rebels cartoon has the auto-twirling double-bladed lightsabers for the Inquisitors.
As for Finn, I don't think it's necessary for him to have a lightsaber or be force-sensitive. I felt it was part of his character arc to "stop running", fight for/defend his friend, and take his loss like a man. To me, him being a non-Jedi in that final duel made his growth feel like a bigger deal. I'd rather see him as a soldier or rogue with an exaggerated reputation for being "the guy who stood up to a Dark Jedi and lived" in Episode 8 as continuation of his "fake it 'til you make it"/smooth talker/compulsive liar attitude.
I'd also have to agree with you on the pacing. I would've liked more slower parts or fewer quick cuts. A lot of the shots were great, but they didn't last long enough for me to fully absorb them. It was like the move was in a hurry.
In response to XombieMike 's spoilers: I'm totally fine with Luke not saying anything. To me, it felt like both his and Rey's facial expressions and physical gestures said everything that needed to be said. The lack of dialog also provides juxtaposition to Rey's introduction at the beginning of the movie with the Miyazaki-esque silent sequence: instead of living aimlessly and alone while waiting for her life to improve in a desert, Rey now knows what she wants out of her life and has people by her side on a planet surrounded by water. By finding Luke, Rey really found herself, her purpose, and ends up in the total opposite from where she started. It's like poetry, it's sort of, they rhyme. From all the speculation/reactions I've read and heard, some people think Rey is Luke's daughter and some people think she's Han and Leia's other kid. I think it could go either way. But I would also kinda like it if Rey wasn't related to Han, Luke, and Leia, her family doesn't come back at all, it's never explained whey she was left on Jakku, and Luke adopts her into the Skywalker family. After all, Star Wars is the story of the Skywalkers and Rey's the new main character. It'd also give Kylo Ren more motivation to fight Rey by thinking she's not worthy of being in the same family as him and Vader. I think the old guy at the beginning is just a random old guy and we're supposed to fill the gaps with our imagination and the few details we have... until we get his official backstory in the books or comics. Up until he hinted about being from Alderaan, I thought he was an older version of Kanan from Rebels. As for Kylo Ren, I don't think the new trilogy will go the Darth or Sith route since Lucasfilm is establishing "new" groups with the First Order and Resistance. I'd rather see Episodes 8 and 9 build on the Knights of Ren as the dark side users and go into new territory than do another "Darth". I also thought everything you mentioned about why he didn't work was the entire point of his character and why I liked him so much. If you feel that way towards part of a movie, it usually means director did something right. I can see Kylo Ren being a divisive topic people will be debate about until Episode 8 comes out, and whether people like him or hate him, they're both right. But you are totally right about the Stormtroopers walking away in that scene. I like the idea of other people witnessing Kylo Ren's temper tantrums, but I thought what the movie did was a too goofy and killed the scene's mood. EDIT: Updated some details.

I saw it last night with one of my best friends. Such a great experience! I haven't felt this happy or emotional about anything in...forever haha. My feelings on it: Really happy about the pacing, variety and overall how it captured so many different emotions throughout. I really am feeling Kylo Ren. He is the most humanized Sith we've seen in a while. He wants to be something that he isn't quite yet, a brutal cold hearted badass Sith Lord. He definitely has the potential for it, but he has a lot of growing to do, (well, him and Rey). I have a feeling by the time episode 9 rolls around we'll start seeing something closer to a sophisticated duel, although I do hope they still manage to portray the raw emotions that were shown during the final fight.
Anyone else think Fin might be force sensitive? Lightsabers are very dangerous and difficult to use without some use of the force. I guess it could just be his Imperial CQC training that could give him the ability to use such a difficult weapon.
I wonder how much older eras will be important to this story. So far we have a huge clash of old and new. Rylo with his very old Sith armour and lightsaber design (definitely some ancient design far before OT/PT era). We also had a brief mention of the clones, and with Luke trying to find the first Jedi Temple I wonder how this will all unfold. Overall I'm super excited about all the new comics, books, and games that will come out about this, as well as how this individual story arc will pan out. May the force be with us all

I saw this the other day (Friday) and overall I really enjoyed the movie, so much so that I went out and ordered the movie's soundtrack (found out Target was the only retailer outside of Disney Music Emporium with an exclusive version of the soundtrack) as well as the new Star Wars Battlefront game (I was gonna pass on it until the Ultimate/Definitive edition with the game & all the DLC came out for $40, but I saw the main game got marked down to $40 for Christmas then I ended up receiving a $15 GS gift card as a early Christmas gift. Throw in a free Kilo Ren POP vinyl bobblehead that usually goes for $12 - $15 when you buy the Standard Edition through GS.com and well I could no longer resist the pull of the "Dark" side ) though like most people I do have a few nitpicks that I hope will be resolved/addressed in Episodes 8 & 9. 1. Finn being able to use a lightsaber, I know the movie was very very lightly hinting that Finn might of, sort of, kinda have some kind of force/Jedi abilities (at the beginning of the movie when Kilo Ren senses something he stops and turns to see Finn in Storm Trooper gear staring at him, Finn being a quick study/becoming a good shot in a tie fighter when he's never been in/operated one before) but I feel that that aspect should have been played up a little more before Finn starts using the lightsaber towards the middle of the movie cause with out it it just makes it feel like anyone can up and grab/use a lightsaber which to me is kinda troublesome as it was established (or at least I believe it was....it's been a while since I've seen the original trilogy) in prior movies that only Jedi/those who are able to tap into or use the force are able to use lightsabers.
2. They don't establish/explain the different factions and why the New Republic & The Resistance are not the same thing when they should be the same thing given how Return of the Jedi ended or how remnants of the old empire are still around and are still a threat.
3. What happened to Poe after the Tie Fighter crashed and why didn't he go looking for BB-8 or Finn
4. 2 noobs ( I think Rey had more hand to hand fighting experience than Finn, but neither had any real prior experience or training using a lightsaber) being able to go toe to toe (for the most part) in a lightsaber duel against a (seemingly) well trained & powerful Sith and were able to not only survive, but in the case of Rey kick his punk@$$ all over the place.

The general consensus on that fight seems to be that he was in a really messed up state of mind and not at a physical prime either. He killed you-know-who, which really messed him up internally, and then was shot at by Chewie's bowcaster which can generally kill in one shot. Fin further injured him, and Rey just finished him off. I know there's a lot of controversy when it comes to this fight already though. With his further training, we may not see him fail in this way again.

1. When it comes to non-Jedi using lightsabers, Han isn't force-sensitive and used Luke's in Episode 5 to cut open the tauntaun. General Grievous wasn't either and used them in Episode 3. I think the reason Kylo Ren looked at Finn was because he noticed he didn't follow orders and Captain Phasma was the one addressed it because of rank-related reasons. With Finn and the TIE fighter gun, I remember hearing Poe say something along the lines of "it's like using a blaster" and that was why Finn was able to catch on.
2. Yeah, I wish that was made clearer too.
3. That's an excellent question, I have no idea.
4. I think H pretty much covered it in his reply.
If anyone's interested in spoiler-filled reviews, Red Letter Media and the Super Best Friends posted what they thought about Episode 7.

@ H & Goosesausage - yeah I know and like I said in my OP these were little nitpicks (well except for the Poe thing and the thing with the lady they visit to get BB-8 back to the Resistance having Luke's lightstaber.....which is something I just thought about/remembered, cause both briefly had me scratching my head in the theater) that didn't really take anything away from my enjoyment of the movie and I hope that these things are sorta addressed (in someway) in the next two movies. @ Goosesausage - It's been so long since I saw Empire (about 6 - 7 years) that I had completely forgotten about that (I purposely went into the movie cold as I wanted to go in with as much of a neutral/non hyped mindset cause the last two times I went to see a Star Wars movie in theaters I went in super hyped and came out utterly disappointed both times)

I remember seeing the CGI Clone Wars movie in theaters thinking "hey, this is the future of Star Wars" and was severely disappointed with it. I tried to keep my expectations in check for an okay-ish action movie and a fun opportunity to experience something with a full audience since I didn't think anything in Episode 7 would live up to the marketing blitz it had, but once the title crawl started I thought "holy crap, this is actually happening, more Star Wars from a generation that grew up with the originals," and ended up going into full fanboy mode the entire 2 hrs.

lightsabers are extremely dangerous because they have no weight, and with the exception of force activated sabers (basically an internal switch) anyone can 'use' one, a force users heightened senses allow them to be more aware of the moving burny stick of death theyre swinging around (and with actual training they are walking death), but with training a non forcie can use a lightsaber with skill, its just extremely difficult for them nooooo, he cant be dead ;_;

I'm going to see it again today. I remembered a couple a things that either bothered me or made my mind wander, but I shrugged them off initially. 1. If you wanted to destroy a super weapon that is much larger than the death star and you know that its weakness is grounded, would you:
A: Send in Wings that specialize in bombing, in addition to typical aircraft fighters IE: the B-Wings
or B: Send 2, maybe 3 X-wings only.
Abrams. B-Wings are a thing. So are Y-Wings. I remember those too. 2.
2. Alright so Rey had heard of the force before, but how did she know about the mind trick? Better yet, how was she even able to grasp the concept. It seemed all she did was think kind of hard. Before you mention possible pedigree, I know about who her implied parents might be. However, Luke was the son of Anakin, and didn't know that the force could be used that way until Ben used it in front of him as an example. So how did she know how to do it so well, if the force has only been a rumor to her up until that point?
3. Not only that, but resisting Kylo Ren during the torture scene too? No training compared to him. Even if his mind wasn't fully in it, I'd imagine she'd at least be knocked out, not talking shit. I'm giving this a pass because at least there was visible effort. She didn't just ignore it and laugh at him or something.
4. The romance one liners from the duel protagonists were pretty bad. Not quite "sand" bad, but I winced at both the "running into you" and "you've looked at me" lines. The other stuff was funny though.
5. How did that glasses lady find Anakin's lightsaber? Empire Strikes Back took great pains to tell us it was lost for good. 3 fantastic shots. It's also in ridiculously good shape. I would have preferred her to have gotten a different one, maybe find one that some trader had? It was nice to see it again, but I don't think nostalgia was a good enough reason to bring this thing back...with zero explanation.
6. I'm with the others, where the hell was Poe? That quick explanation he gave made no sense. Is he going to pull a Lando in Episode 8? Oh right, did the real Lando retire?
7. I think they revealed giant dude too early. I would have had him as a voice only. It could have turned hammy if done wrong, but I liked the giant's voice.
8. If they were going to retcon the entire Expanded Universe, why did they..."take inspiration" from so much of it. Kylo looks like Revan. Kylo's true identity might as well have been Jaycen. The entire story is starting to play out like the Empire comics. There's probably more that I'm missing, but that was from the top of my head when I was talking to my bro when the movie was over.
9. I've noticed people call Rey a mary sue. I don't think that's accurate. The things I've pointed out(and some I didn't because it's still too early to say it or I don't agree), could lead into that direction if they aren't careful though. As of now, that isn't correct.
10. I only had 9 things off the top of my head, but I like even numbers so HAHAHAHA!! I just wasted your time with this one! MUHAHAHAHAHA....I'm hungry. Who here likes carne asada fries? I can't stomach the stuff. Lactose intolerant among other things. That's it. What I originally said in my first post is still what I thought of the movie. Call this an...expansion. Despite me just dedicating time so writing the above, I'm not really the type that likes to do this. When it comes to bad or even heinous movies, I usually just move on. It would take a lot for me to dedicate so much time to carefully explain why...unless it angered me for some reason. The opposite for good movies. I can talk about why I liked something for as long as I can. Then there are movies that I only found "ok". Those are the hardest for me partly because the people who ask the "black and white EITHER YOU LIKED IT OR YOU DIDN'T" types. Usually they just assume that I didn't like it, which makes me want to say this to them because it feels like I wasted my time with explaining anything. If I find answers to these questions on my second viewing, I'll come back and update. If I find more to "nitpick", I will also return for that. Again I'm usually not the type but since this is Star Wars and I love you guys, I'll make an exception.

Regarding a certain "overused" plot device: I feel like Death Stars in Star Wars are like mechs/Metal Gears in Metal Gear. They're the most powerful weapon in universe, so of course they're going to keep refining and iterating on them. I don't see why people were surprised the bad guys wanted to build their universe's de facto superweapon.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has broken sales records, and has now become the highest-grossing film of all time [in the United States]. I am not sure about the rest of the world, yet. Perhaps many people already knew this would happen, what with all of the times I saw the same people going to see the movie over and over again (myself included, with friends).

I personally loved it and I honestly thought in my own opinion, that it was the best way to bring back a long dormant franchise (movie wise, not EU wise) to the bring screen. Pleasing old fans and newcomers alike. Is it better than the original 3? Not IV and V, but I liked it better than VI. Also there's going to be a new Star Wars Movie this year

A guy I know just posted a theory about Star Wars and I thought you guys might enjoy it as much as I did lol
"Okay guys, I just had a delightfully insane theory about Star Wars
Obvious spoilers but if you care about spoilers and still haven't seen it at this point, I dunno what to tell you.
You all know theories about who Rey is. I was thinking how it was suck if she wasn't related to Luke, Han\Leia, Obi-Wan, Palpatine or anyone like the theories you've heard and she was just a random person. (Even though it's heavily hinted in the movie that she's a lot like Luke and she resembles Natalie Portman a lot)
Okay, crazy idea time: she is a female clone or reincarnation of Anakin Skywalker. Star Wars is weird space fantasy with ghosts and space wizards and all that so why not? So say she's Anakin reincarnated. Luke dumps her off on Jakku because he's scared of what would happen if she went bad. She beat Kylo Ren like he was nothing when she had zero training, so if she went evil, the whole galaxy would be fucked.
Also yes, I realize this is basically the story of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and it's anime and insane as hell and probably won't happen but it would be cool."

I've heard of that theory. Probably not Anakin reincarnated, but another manifestation of The Chosen One. So far from what we know (from TCW show), they have the capabilities to maximize the use of both the Dark Side and Light Side powers simultaneously which is what set them apart from other force users who tend to master one or the other at a time. Excited to see what path she'll go on for sure.

Did anyone else know yet that Star Wars Episode VIII's (8) theater air-date has been pushed back?
It was originally May 26th, 2017. Now it is December 15th, 2017.
Ah well, so long as they have more time to work on the next movie. :3
