Just found an article that had "Kingdom of Amalur" in it and I was like, dude that was an awesome game XD. I don't know how many of you played the game but the story was great the visuals was awesome (Todd McFarlane worked on the art)... it did lack a balanced leveling system... anyway I just wanted people to remember the game... and maybe dust it off an play it for a while... This thread is for the forgotten or unappreciated games out there... help us remember why they were worth our time.

I'll just say doujin games in general... Indie games is becomming a thing with nearly as much media attention as commercial...and even though Japanese and Western games have equal attention in general, doujin games are practically neglected by the media, which is odd because the doujin game scene in Japan is bigger than the indie game scene here, so much so that they have retail stores dedicated to them selling physical copies and whatnot... If you suggest a doujin game with a translation patch, nobody listens... irks me.

Doujin games aren't the easiest things to get a hold of. It's usually like some JP digital purchase website or something I can't read. If you have something more accessible to suggest, then by all means...I'm interested in those two Mega Man/Castlevania crossover games, Rosenkreuzstilette 1 and 2. I always have to Google how to spell that, lol. Anything like that would be great, too. If there's an English way to actually buy those games, I might be in. I -might- be tempted to download them off of xyz random free place and patch it, but ehh.
Underappreciated games? Depending on who you ask, that could be almost anything. PS1 games just crossed my mind, so here are a few good ones I don't usually see anyone talk about:
Vandal Hearts, Azure Dreams, Front Mission 3...I'll go ahead and say Valkyrie Profile as well just because lol. WHY DID THEY STOP MAKING THEM AHHHHHHHHH
...Thunderforce V, SaGa Frontier (it's actually weird how I never see these mentioned on the internet), and...Grandia? At the time of its release, there were rumblings of Grandia being a rival to FF7. Of course, the same was said of a random PC game called Septerra Core that I played, too, which definitely was no such thing.

One of my favorite retro games on the NES was Faxanadu. Most people don't even remember it, but realistically it was fairly important as a Metroivania game that had aspects of SOTN (leveling, armor, weapons, etc), like an unrefined precursor.
My biggest beef was the "mantra" codes that it had in place instead of saving. It was difficult, having similar issues to the original NES Castlevania. You had to buy engagement rings for your jump arcs, sometimes enemies that didn't hit you registered a hit, sometimes you would literally see your weapon intersect into the enemy sprite and it still didn't register. You couldn't travel between areas via portal or whatever, so going anywhere was a trek.
Those problems aside, it was a great game. Stage design was great, the palette broad enough (but could have used more color diversity), the story was "meh", and the music was... Well, it was memorable in the same way Torgo's is in the movie Manos: The Hands of Fate. I'm having trouble accurately describing the game at the moment, and I might come back to it later so I can be more descriptive. I really suggest you give it a go. HOWEVER you need to be able to set your expectations back about 25 years in terms of what you're used to. While it's a great game, it'll always pale in comparison to SOTN or POR. But for an NES game? Not bad.

IMO a great RTS released on the 90s, but it got a lot of hate just because it was very different from the original Total Annihilation. Still, great history, great gameplay, great f*ckin music (listen to the this, made with just 3 instruments, truly a work of a genius). I wonder why Cavedog went bankrupt after launching its expansion.

I hate singling games out, that's why Id idn't suggest one...and frankly I doubt anyone will actually get up and play it anyway. I mean I couldn't even get people interested in that free game thread for goodness sake! How am I to expect someone will actually import a doujin game or register on melonbooks ors omething to buy it and then apply a translation patch or whatnot. Though I suppose someone may just find a download or something.
There's a game I personally like more slightly but many noobs blame the game for requiring a big grind every floor when fact is they are just playing bad, you don't need to grind until the very end for the final boss.
So I'll suggest another game that people have a hard time with but don't blame requiring a grind because fact is the game doesn't actually give you much when you level =P. Genius of Sappheiros, It's supposedly like romancing saga, but I haven't played any of the saga games that weren't on a gameboy, and those don't seem very similar to me eh. I probably SHOULD play them at some point though. Just a bit of advice though, many bosses are quite difficult, and generally require you to find a strategy that counters them effectively. But just going into them with a generic build (you can change your character's builds without going to a town or reloading a save or anything) gets most people whooped really hard really fast on bosses.
Also, the final boss pre-expansion is a monster. Truly the biggest sense of accomplishment I've felt beating a boss since I was a little kid. I was suck on that @%@#% for longer than like the 10th to 3rd hardest bosses ever for me =P... 2nd being Arsenal in Final Fantasy Legends 2 (saga game I know but I don't know the # in the saga series). Easy if you play with gamefaqs and have the 7sword and whatnot, but I was a kid without a guide, and never got the 7 sword or other forms of ultimate gear, and I didn't know how to get a good monster, I just tried feeding it often and would always end up with crap lol.

Wilhelm, nice, I've owned that game but never played it (right now I have it on rom so I will give it a shot). Ciel so the name of the game was "Total Annihilation Kingdoms" right? not into RTS' so I doubt I'll play it but I bet some people who are into RTS will love your suggestion. and ghaleon don't just think people won't listen there are die hards here who would defiantly give your game a try... I already like your other suggestion. just give people some visuals to feast on and you might get people interested. like this: Genius of Sappheirosand for Wilhelm here is Faxanaduand Ciel... you already put up a screen shot awesome XD These are great keep them coming

Oh yeah I forgot to mention Faxanadu.. are you aware that Xseed seems to have indication that they are going to localize Xanadu Next soonish...and if you can't wait there's actually a fan translation patch. It's a sequel to Faxanadu, though it's not a side scroller anymore.. it's more like...uhh. It's kinda sorta like Ys but slower with more rpg elements like equipment customization and consumeable use and inventory management and whatnot.
I think I also heard that Falcom is making another Sequel to that game... Also that screenshot lies.. Everything in that game is brown, dark brown, light brown, peach, or tan coloured... EVERYTHING! =P

I was thinking about this question for a bit, and I admit I was having a hard time knowing whether something would be considered overlooked or not.
So with that in mind, here's some possibly overlooked games from years past:
NES: Milon's Secret Castle. A game of surprising depth (and difficulty, without use of guides). Gameboy Advance: CIMA the Enemy. A bit repetitious, but great story, and very unusual game mechanic. SNES: Wario's Woods. (Only on NES). A stack-em puzzle game where you actually run around in the playing field. DS: Away, Shuffle Dungeon. Largely panned, but interesting game mechanic (does get repetitious). Crazy story. PC: Ultima VI. Probably at the top of my list. Best played without any guides. Very difficult. But incredible story. Also probably beyond the patience of today's gamer. Truly open world. PC: Zork Zero. At the cusp of text adventure into graphics. Plenty of craziness built into this game with the Jester as an antagonist.

yeah overlooked is an odd expression for sure. I interpreted it as not over-rated/under-rated like is such a common topic in gaming, but less accusatory towards each consumer, and more of a matter of circumstance as to why it's not given the appreciation we feel it deserves.

This entire series. Ninjas, Mechs, and humor to sum it up. Solid games across the board. I heard good things about the DS game too, but not much. That one is probably the most obscure of the bunch, and it's the last game in the series. The N64 games even got the guy who sang the Dragonball openings and the guy who sang quite a few 70's mecha anime openings. The music is also really good across the board. Music examples:

Yes, I loved Goemon and I wish they continued it... sadly the IP belongs to Konami and I doubt we will see any more of him (really sad face)

PUUURAAAASMAAAAA! love mystical ninja and faxanadu, played ultima 3 and 6 on nintendo a bunch, wish there was a version of 1-3 on pc that had nes graphics and music and the same for 4-5 that used the 6 engine (kinda like kq1 vga), and Ys needs a remake of 4-6 so bad

Ys HAS a remake of 4.. it's called memories of Celceita.. or something.. spelling off. It's damn good too btw.. Of course most people dont' care cuz they have this religious hatred to the vita and refuse to acknowledge that it has good games. It needs a remake of 5 though. Oh yeah, they kinda remade 6 too.. store.steampowered.com/app/312540/I say kinda because it offers very little over the basic ps2 version (which I own btw, good game but the voice acting is horrible... I wonder if it's better in the steam version).

my big problem with the vita is ive looked through its library, and literally 99% of the games on it are either not out in the us or TBA (a LOT of them), are ports of a game i already have (smtp4, bloodstained, etc), are ios/droid/microtrans ports (the new mana, angry birds), are from series i havent played yet and are much cheaper to get into on something i already have when i get around to them (atelier, xian odyssey, tales of, etc), or are ps1/psp games i would have to rebuy again (my entire psp/ps1 library), and likely cant use my saves on, the list goes on. its not lack of good games, its that it doesnt have enough games to stand on its own (granted xb1 and ps4 are the same way but for a different reason) or the draw of "bring your old toys, we have space for them" (having a voucher system where you can insert your game in the ps3/4/psp and have it generate a redeem code wouldve been a workaround)
the few games that dont fit any of those or i want to play are the 2 ys games (i missed those cause by that time i was glassy eyed and tired of scrolling, but ones unnamed still), the seiken densetsu remake (that i have on gb and gba already because fuck this game rules), muramasa rebirth (looks cool), neptunia (have to play through the first one still), demon gaze, and deception 4. thats about it
anyway, good to know i can get ys 6 when it goes on sale
FF Adventure remake, look at the awesome!

Demon gaze is good. But if you like it you should like dungeon travellers 2 as well... Ive played the demo only (waiting for a sale cuz sale season is soon), but its better in nearly every way so far... Except no fran.
Your list isnt that small though. I think its worth getting a vita if you can get one for cheap. I got mine for 120 canadian only, you should be able to do similar this holiday sale season.
Also... Vita games seem to have massive discounts from what ive seen. Like 75% off many of the titles you mentioned at times.

I mean, the Playstation (Vita) TV should be somewhere around $30-40 still and folks just recently apparently found a way to remove the whitelist restriction on the few games that weren't playable before. You're getting a modern home console for -really- cheap there.
I need to check out that FF Adventure remake, I have a friend that would be pretty interested too I think...

I keep forgetting about the pstv thing. I'm not sure which of those games are compatible or not, but yeah, I wish I knew about it because 40 bucks is an even better deal!
