I'm not a member of any tech forum, but I figured somebody here probably has the answer to this question...
I have a relatively powerful desktop computer in my basement. I'd like to interface with that desktop to run software that's on that machine, but run it from another device (laptop, tablet, whatever). So to be clear, I don't want to stream the output of the desktop to something else... I want to use another device to serve as a secondary interface to the desktop and to manipulate that desktop directly.
What are my options?
My desktop just upgraded to Windows 10. Previously I had Windows 7, and I was only able to achieve the above setup through a convoluted system of requesting remote access (and it wasn't worth the effort).
At the moment, I have a laptop running Windows 7 that could serve as the interface. But I'm open to purchasing a tablet or something else, IF it's possible to do what I'm looking to do. It seems like it should be easy to do, but it wasn't with Windows 7. And there's always little catches like "Yes, but you need to upgrade to Pro" or whatever. That's where I'd appreciate some ideas or links to sites to check out for more info. So please let me know (or if I can provide further info) .... and thanks!

Really long monitor cable?
Since you dont want to stream remote desktop software is out and thats the way id try it, sounds like you want the laptop to become monitor 2 but unless you have a wierd hookup most i/o ports on laptops are output only
Another option is to make the big pc a server, but that only hosts the file, it still uses your laptop to run the program

Hrm, that's good to know... thanks!
It sounds like remote desktop might be the way to go. I'll check more into it. I'll be curious what the typical latency between the interface is... I would want to keep any video-audio lag down to a minimum...
