Hi ladies and gents. This will be the fifth time I've played through the game and there's one thing I can't understand for the very life of me: what prompts OD to let you take out more books? I just defeated Bloodless and am still at the two book limit. I know from past experiences that I should have three by now. Does anyone know what makes him decide to let you take out more books? As always, thanks in advance!

That's weird. I don't remember ever checking out more than 2 until I've beaten OD. Maybe I had been able to on some of my runs and just missed it. I'll have to give it another look at some point.

I seem to recall hearing that it was based on map completion, but I can't say if that's right since I don't have a source for it.

Hmmm - well I checked around on Steam and Gamefaqs and this seems to be an ongoing problem. Some people get the ability to take out three very quickly while others reach the end of the game with a limit of two. Some theories offered were map completion, bookshelves read and story progression. To test, I created another save file and was able to get three prior to the train but in my main file (I'm about to fight Zangetsu the second time) my limit is still two and OD simply gives me the generic "Here to take out a book?" response no matter how often I see him or change my book combination. The common consensus on the other sites was that it's bugged and from what I can see, I agree it looks to be that way  . |

Could it be that it's based on how often you have returned books? It is kind of a trust thing, right? So OD would trust you more, the more often you actually return books back to him after a while...? Just a thought

Yän - I tried that too  I returned to OD frequently (or at the very least after each boss). I also tried to change what I took out each time so that each book was used in rotation. I just beat OD and IGA before facing the end boss. Obviously beating OD unlocked all 21 books but before the fight my limit was still two. I have reported this and some other issues I discovered in the bugs section. Unfortunately I doubt the developers check here anymore.

OD's number of books are simply a "number of rooms walked since last time" function, but it does indeed bug out.
You can (I've done it) get 3 books before fighting Andy. Simply move around a bunch of rooms and return to OD, and repeat. Iirc going from OD to the teleporter, teleport to cathedral and go talk to the barber, back to teleport to village, and go through and check on each of the rooms including the save, and go back to the teleporter to OD. I think that's barely the minimum needed to trigger it.
It does bug out at times, and I haven't figured out exactly what causes it to bug, but it seems to happen when fighting bosses. I've also been stuck with *1* book once.
That said, NG+ you're always set to a flat line 2 books, and it skips the entire "Here you may have anther book" system.
