Some weapons are more aesthetically pleasing than others, and then there's the vulnerability issue as well (which is, in my opinion, not accentuated enough).
I like the flame whip and holy dagger, for instance, but those weapons can never be used if you possess a stronger weapon. That's a shame, I think, so why not allow upgrading weapons to their maximum potential? The holy dagger may not be as strong as the most powerful dagger still, even when upgraded, but it should be few points behind so that it is competitive, and particularly so when facing enemies vulnerable to holy.
The upgrading should be expensive, naturally, and could require several rare components.
