KnightMayor studios (former Bioware devs) are making a fantasy RPG and they need at least $400,000 monies. The devs mostly worked on Jade Empire, Dragon Age, and SW:TOR. The game is coming to PC with Mac and Linux stretch goals at $425,000. The game itself requires a $30 pledge, but there's 5,000 early bird slots for $25. There is also a music track and free wallpapers on the campaign page. Add-ons are available when the campaign ends (interesting to see how that works out, hope it goes over well).

Might throw some money at them, but I can't see myself going for more than $25/30 unless I decide to throw an extra 50 for an artbook.

Huh. Normally the first day is supposed to be a big day for most Kickstarters, but it only made about $12,000 so far. Guess this announcement was drowned out by all the Gamescom news.

Ouch. Backer-only updates in the middle of a campaign do not bode well. Looking at the campaign numbers and the lack of buzz, it looks like Mooncrest isn't going to make it. I hope it gets picked up by a publisher if things don't work out.

I caved in and decided to back the project just to see what the update was.
The campaign is going to be cancelled within 24 hours.
They know their advertising efforts won't be enough at this point, there's going to be a more detailed postmortem update, and they also felt the original video was the biggest failure of their campaign since it made them look bad and didn't describe the game. The devs plan on making a second campaign and asked backers for advice on how to improve. The update ended with a couple of gifs of the game's current combat system.

Ooof, second failed kickstarter I've seen on here today ;_; Sucks for those ex-Bioware devs. However, it seems like they at least quit while they were ahead, which is more than one can say for those Woolfe guys. D: Hopefully their next effort will be better

The initial pitch video was one of the worst I'd ever seen - cringe factor was off the charts. Probably turned a lot of people off from the project. If they relaunch hopefully they have a strong prototype ready to go.

It just seemed to me that a lot of KSs have failed recently, but then again, doing a kickstarter is a pretty tough business. Well, learning experiences and all, here's hoping the Mooncrest guys--and anyone else who didn't succeed with their initial kickstarters--now has a better idea of what to do next time, or at least advice to give

October update: Mooncrest is going on indefinite hiatus. It's getting too expensive to make a new demo out of pocket, the devs don't want to run a campaign during the holiday season, and the devs scrapped a second campaign with a $40,000 goal. It sucks to see all this happen, but I do appreciate how they're accepting defeat gracefully and being transparent with the situation. I hope these guys end up finding a publisher to help them out. The way the blog post was written, it sounded like the second planned campaign would've asked for money to fund the vertical slice rather than funding the full game and having it available for everyone at the beginning (kinda Indivisible). I'm glad they didn't go that route. Crowdfunding a vertical slice feels like having a bake sale fundraiser for a bigger bake sale fundraiser in the future that might not even happen. Plus, no one wants a repeat of the Shadow of the Eternals/Dennis Dyack/Precursor Games situation where they keep clinging on with multiple campaigns while crashing and burning and somewhere in the middle of all that one of the creative leads got arrested for bad things involving minors. It's good to believe in a vision and fight for it, but it's also good to know when to move on.
