SGDQ just ended and I'm still overwhelmed by the event. People raised $1.2 million for Doctors Without Borders by playing games as fast as they could. There were so many good speedruns this year and an overwhelming amount of fun/positivity! So, what did you get to watch live? What runs would you recommend? There were so many runs I enjoyed but I don't want to overwhelm anyone, so I'll keep it short. Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow
This was a game I read about in gaming magazines as a kid, but never got to experience in any way and forgot it existed until the marathon. It looked like a lot of fun, had a Michael Giacchino soundtrack (he composed a bunch of Pixar, JJ Abrams, and Wachoski movies), and was incredibly dark for a Disney game about ducks. It also ended up setting a world record. Space Station Silicon Valley
SSSV was one of my favorite games as a kid/awkward teenager. It's a wacky platformer from the team that went on to make Grand Theft Auto. Lots of silliness, good commentary, glad to see this game get some time in the spotlight. Super Mario 64 120 Star Race (part 1) (...and part 2. The stream went offline for a few seconds near the end.)
Close race between three people. Quite a few close calls and chokes, but you know you're watching a good speedrun competition when you realize you're gasping out loud at people playing video games.

I've been watching these since they started them and downloaded runs before that. It's something I really enjoy spectating, but would never want to do lol.
While it might have been actually more exciting last year, the Tetris Grand Master Challenge block was still amazing. That's one of the best examples of a practiced skill as far as runs go.
Sidescrollers are always fun to watch for me since I love those and the runs are quick. Longer RPGs and the Pokemon games not so much, the latter because it's literally just a long-ass string of manipulating the game to the point that it's not even recognizable anymore lol.

I'm still going through games I missed...
For some reason, I missed or forgot they were doing Rondo of Blood. It's funny to me how optimal mobility in Castlevania games often ends up being something silly, like in that game's case backflipping and moonwalking lol. Guy did the whole thing on an old arcade stick, no less.
Currently in the middle of LttP. They've broken the whole game down into frames, of course. I would probably get sick of any single player game well before I got to that point, lol.

There was a run of Bloodlines where the dude jumped right through the saw blades. My friend and I flat out quit that game after seeing that. It was hilarious. Wait, I thought they raised 2 million for charity? Either way, I wonder why gaming news doesn't report on stuff like this. This is good material for articles.

They did Bloodlines this time? I didn't see that in the schedule either, and the site is down now and I can't look at it Last I heard, it was at about 1.25 million or so for SGDQ this time. I think AGDQ is usually bigger. It's probably not reported on because positive news is boring, right? =/

Konami is really really good at programming. I still get angry goosebumps watching this. In all seriousness, Romscout's playthrough of Portrait of Ruin was insane. He said he hadn't played the game in ages and still did it in 17 minutes or so. And of course, I can never get enough of these Metroid/Castlevania races.
