Sometimes when you open the pause menu, Miriam's head model doesn't load properly and the game gets stuck.
Sometimes when you read a book or talk to an NPC, the game immediately force-quits.
Sometimes when doing absolutely nothing in particular, the game will just freeze if it feels like it.
These crashes seem to be unpredictable and inconsistent. Some people haven't seen any crashes at all, while others run into them almost all the time.
For me, my PC version has frozen for no reason 6 times, I've had the headless Miriam crash 3 times, and experienced the bookshelf crash once. On the Switch version, I have crashed once just from trying to talk to Dominique.
When speedrunning a game, the player's skill should first and foremost determine how well they perform. But if the game can just decide to crash and kill your run for no reason, that's an incredible frustration, and one that really shouldn't be happening.
I really think, for upcoming patches, before improving framerate, performance, or anything else, the absolute number one priority is make sure the game never crashes unexpectadly like this. A crash here and there might be tolerable, if annoying, for a game with constant autosave. But for a game with specific save points and an entire Speedrun Mode, crashes this frequent are absolutely inexcusable.

"A game shouldn't crash so often" - Sorry just fixed your thread title there. ;P
But for real, this is a pretty ambitious project for these guys. This isn't a AAA dev team, it's an indie studio making a game tha is much bigger than most indie games. Some hiccups are to be expected... They are still working on the game, so at least you can be thankful that these issues PROBABLY will be fixed eventually.
As far as speed running goes, don't... Most speed runners I follow wont start doing runs on a game until it's long past the point of receiving patches.

I've only encountered one crash in my 45 hours of playtime on PC. I examined a bookshelf while dashing and I guess the game didn't like the way I did it so it crashed. Fortunately I saved a few minutes prior so it wasn't a big deal. Overall the PC version is incredibly stable, it runs flawlessly.
I have GTX 1060 6GB, and i7-8750h and play on Windows 10.

Zero crashes on PC in about 70 hours of play. I use Nvidia. I have a feeling that will turn out to be the major difference. I am not a fan of Nvidia by any means, but I am a realist, and if there's one thing I don't like, it's encountering the scenario where some esoteric app is needed to get a particular game to work in a particular way, and the app only works for X because most people, including the maker of the app, use X. That's the reality that decides what brand I use when it comes to GPUs. (Well, that and my 290X literally died without warning, forcing me to buy a replacement at retail, which I absolutely did not appreciate. And it probably died because AMD happily lets their GPUs run at 80+ degrees stock, which is probably actually desperately overclocked and they just pretend it isn't.)
The point is the game absolutely does have a crash-free life on some systems, meaning crashes people experience are not necessarily the fault of the game; one could theoretically achieve just as crash-free an experience by replicating the specs of those who have no issues.

After you get the bookcase crash you quickly learn to rest at ALL sofas to save progress. I hope they fix all the crashes.
