IGA has said that Miriam will have magical powers ,based on Magi-crystals or anything of the sort. He said on a interview that, whatever the system could be at the end, the basics are more or less the same of the Soul series (Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of sorrow) and Order of Ecclesia. For those that don't know those games, basically you kill monsters and has a chance that the monster gives you a magic. Each magic will probably have something to do with the monster itself.
Some powers was revealed at concept arts and we also know that the game will have Familiars and, like all Igavanias, Miriam will have acess to special abilities that let her explore more of the castle (like double jump, sliding, magical keys and such).
What ideas do you guys have for powers and abilities?

As Miriam is an Alchemist and inflicted with the cursed crystals I wouldn't mind seeing some transmutation-style magics. Perhaps it's as simple as turning a patch of floor into a temporary shield that crumbles away after a few hits, letting you negate the projectile weapon of a nasty ranged foe. Or a more utilitarian spell for early on in the game...extending & powering up your weapon with a crystalline shell around it in the shape of the weapon itself. Temporary buffs to help the player overcome a particularly challenging section have always appealed to me.

Transmutation is a good idea... Maybe manipulate the terrain for travel? rearrange hidden walls into passages, move the ceiling or floor and turn it into stairs, transforming her body into different forms for combat, altering her stats temporarily (boost strength and drop intelligence, or boost defense, drop constitution. Things like that. Increase gold drop rates in exchange for EXP or vice versa.)

A lot of individual spells could work. One example would be erupting a flame on the other end of the room and teleporting into the flame for travel. Another could be summoning crystal stalagmites in a line to deal special elemental damage.

A spell that decomposes an enemy into base components after they are weakend sufficaintly. I mean as an alchemist gathering ingredients and reagents is importaint so why rely on random drops. the closer to deaths door the better the loot. It could look like a kickass transmutaion circle.

That was something that I was actually quite fond of in Order of Ecclesia; I liked that Shanoa's weapons had a magic gauge which made players think before acting when attacking. If I recall correctly, I think the first time IGA did this was with Portrait of Ruin wherein... after doing a series of tasks, you eventually get to play as the vampire twins. Their abilities were designed in the same manner that was used for Shanoa

Maybe adding something to the effect of Doppelganger ability which allowed for multiple sets. Also possibly renaming it to something that would reflect the stained glass idea that this game is using.

This may sound odd but I like the idea of gravity based abilities and spells. Like a slowfall ability or maybe some kind of bomb that makes enemies in the air drop to the ground and deal damage based of distance.

My pipe dream for this game is for it to be the PoR successor we never got, but instead of standing still while charging you could control the direction of the spells with the right analog stick while still having control of Miriam with the d-pad. I haven't really thought out the mechanics to make such a system happen, but I'd love to see the game go that direction. On more realistic grounds, given that the game will more then likely have crystals as some sort of modifier, I think it would be interesting if we saw a return of HoD spellbook modifiers, except this time for weapons, critical arts (ones that are much more expanded on then what was seen in DoS and PoR) and item crashes. Whether the crystals will have an effect on your entire equipment set or must be applied individually will probably depend if they actually want players to have to level up towards their own unique build, rather then just equipping whatever suits their situation best.
Speaking of laming it out, this is a bit off topic but having healing items that heal over a period of time rather then instantly and/or not being able to pause the game in order to change equipment would easily address a couple of the complaints I had with previous titles

I do agree though, using that for extra slots is an ingenious idea, especially for Spells.

Isn't the camera also zoom-able with R3? (clicking the Right Stick?) I'd think R3 would also be a good choice for mapping another Spell/ability/item, too!
