Maybe I'm missing something, but I haven't felt a need or reason to use whips the majority of the time. In Portrait of Ruin, the pros and cons using a whip versus sword were more noticeable. In this game I find the whip usually more so as a disadvantage to use.

To my mind, the reach of the whip is nice but the attack animation is too long (even with shards and items to augment the attack speed), making you vulnerable in most situations. I took a spear instead.

I wont disagree about the animation time and how slow it is for the power it gives. I avoided it for that speed reason.
That said, I just found out that the whip special actually always crits I think. Normal hits have normal crit chance, but I have never had the technique not crit.
I am going to be messing with it to test this out.

There are people on youtube who swear by the whip and have beaten the optional super bosses without getting hit by jump attacking with the whip which cancels its animation time.

In Tower of Twin Dragons, the whip is the only thing that can reliably hit the poison toads without them catching me and poisoning me. So I usually like whips there.

I used whip for reach (like vs stained glass), but then I got the flying sword which is just better than any whips I have.

Come to think of it, using whips on short enemies like frogs makes a lot of since because you rarely have to crouch. I'm looking forward to playing this game from scratch again from a different perspective. I just need to beat the last boss now!

You can also do a normal attack follow up with a special dureing the normal animation then backstep attack again for a super fast combo.
Honestly i like the slow weapons if you manage your animation canceling you can do some nasty burst damage.

I would love if the whip weapons attack straight forward and not diagonally downward :S

Hell no the whip sucks. That broken piece of shit weapon. I tried it once then abandoned it (feels the exact same as the beta backer build........I don't think they touched it since then). I wish they gave us a traditional whip. Thankfully there are PLENTY of other good weapons to use.

I like the whips, I use them till I find something significantly more powerful I like the attack pattern the damage area (the only thing I can complain about is that they don't always hit candles right in front of you but even that makes sense since a whip is only dangerous at it's tip) and I don't know why people are complaining about them being too slow, I think people might want the whip to be the perfect weapon with no downside and no disadvantage which just breaks the game, NO THANK YOU. Am also glad they changed the damage area from previous whips, as all your weapons attack straight in front of you this gives the whip more specialized use and the ability to attack in that diagonal pattern
The rods though HOLY SHIT are overpowered even when they are underpowered! because you can get so many hits in with them you can do a colossal amount of damage to anyone.

Whip is one of my most used weapons, the only major stretch f the game I wasnt using a whip was when I made the Durandal which was a LOT stronger than the best whip I had. Then I started upgrading and the only weapons I use close to as much as the whips are guns or swords (I have the Blue Rose and of course I will use the weapon from the box.)
heck, the Ambivalence is probably my favorite weapon in the game, likely will be until the DLC hits PS4 and I can finally fight IGA for the swordwhip.

I've been enjoying the Whip. It's become one of my most used weapons next to the Katana. From what another member has said, it makes it much easier to kill the frog/toad enemies, some weapons have a harder time dealing with the smaller kinds of enemies such as them.
On my 2nd playthrough, I'm trying to switch things up by using Swords & Greatswords instead. It is a different mindset for sure with greatswords in how they're a little slower, but cover a much wider attack area above Miriam.

Other people have pretty much covered this, but here's my take. The whip is situational, like most of the weapons. I found two or three spots where the whip gave the most convenient and efficient solution to what I was trying to do -- particularly within the context of grinding away shards. A good example of a different weapon fulfilling this role would be the Swordwhip, which, uniquely in the game, allows one to hit things more or less instantly from almost fully across the screen, potentially without pause, and I've found a few scenarios where that was useful.
It's worth noting that the reason why the whip functions the way it does -- a wide and unusual attack arc with an almost excessively large windup -- is likely because the developers were conscious of making the whip too similar in behavior to how it manifests in real Castlevania games. Anything besides what they ultimately came up with would probably have been essentially no different from whips in those games. Maybe a little overcautious, given the considerable direct parallels between Bloodstained and Symphony of the Night, but still understandable.
