I thought my game was bugged, but it turns out the issue is stick vs dpad. You can't attack downwards if you are using the analog stick, or it is so finicky about you being in the exact right position as to be functionally impossible. No matter how you position, it never counts as diagonally downward for purposes of triggering the downward attack, just as crouching. This means you can only hit small floor enemies with claymors due to the overhead slash motion naturally hitting these enemies. This basically means you cannot play the game with the analog stick, despite it being enabled and otherwise viable.

You can.
I just tested it on my PC with a PS3 controller and I can get both in air and ground downward attacks working. I tried it with both the D-Pad (my preference) and the stick controls.
What controller are you using?

I think what is happening is that the right angle for d-pad down to be registered is not very consistent. I think the dev team should be able to fix that.
Someone should report this as a bug. This is exceptionally important for switch users.

That is why I was asking for what controller was being used. On my PS3 controller, it is VERY consistently working. However, not every controller works the same. That is part of the reason I have XBox controllers, they are pretty bad precision wise in my experience.
I do have a separate issue with the default Switch ontroller and that is my hand size doesnt work well with them.

Sorry about the whole thing just now. The thing is, due to the fact that the game has similar resolution regardless, many will choose to use the joycons, which don't even have a ps d-pad (which would have worked great by the way) I think you need to be specifically thrusting at around 25 degrees for it to happen on a Xbox controller. Simply pressing down does not work.

Haha, woops. I misspelled "have". It was supposed to be hate. But yeah, there is always a range the programmer puts in. Unfortunately, not all gamepads have the same output for a given range.

I decided to test this out with my PS3 controller despite playing the game exclusively with a D-Pad. (I mean the commands are practically like Street Fighter, why would you use analog?)
Aside from techniques like Parry that require double tapping left or right twice feeling quite awkward because of the extra travel distance, I can confirm that all techniques are easy to trigger. Absolutely no issues, I could play the game fully like this if I wanted. Also doesn't need to be said that I can also attack the ground diagonally with no issues.
Conclusions: People here with issues need to get a better controller.

Now I have the switch version, can confirm this as a serious problem. There is a small angle where you trigger down slash and all other times, including being absolutely 270 or 6 o clock cause regular slash.
