I know how you feel. I was actually wondering this myself, and I think it may have to do with the fiscal year. I looked it up and apparently for businesses, the fiscal year is divided up into quarters, and the 3rd quarter ends in June. I was always expecting them to release in July, but the 4th quarter starts on July 1. So if they released earlier in June, profits would start to show in the 3rd quarter, which might be important. But I'm not sure, I guess I could ask around for more reasons as to why the game was released this early. I think backer impatience might have had a hand in it too--people were starting to get really tired of waiting. I personally would have gone for a release in July or August for the reasons you state, but looking at the general attitude of the fandom, people might have started calling for IGA's blood if he waited that long, and not in a good way! Thank you, gunlord500 . I'm amazed at so many backers, especially in this forum, being "cool" with this and even defending this "standard" practise to please the shareholders or whatever. It's seems obvious to me that it's not appreciated among most of the members active here, so I'll try to stay away from posting. I'm currently only able to generate bitterness and snide comments. I'll be back once I have something more heart-warming to say. It's not about being "cool" with it. It's just recognizing the reality and not letting myself get upset about it. This happens way more often than people realize with way more titles with differing repercussions depending on how big the title is and how big the publisher behind it is. Some retailers don't care because it's the only way they can survive against bigger chain stores. Other places don't care because they just don't care. The way game distribution works until teleportation becomes a reality there's *literally* no way a game company can stop this before the fact without games showing up late and then you've got tons of pissed off people then. All they can do is find out after and take appropriate steps then. I know people are upset because people who aren't backers might be playing it first. I get it and I understand it. But the only way that wasn't going to happen was to piss other people off in the process. Total prevention means the physical edition couldn't exist which would probably have cut into how much money was backed. Physical copy prevention would have meant physical games would have shipped out earlier which means that digital people would have had to wait until release date to play while others did. That is the reality and that's why I choose not to let it affect me.

I remember not that long ago the entire World of Light for Smash 5 was leaked weeks in advance of the game's street release because people got it early from retailers that chose not to honor their deal with Nintendo.
This happens all the time. They have to make sure retailers have stock on hand so people can buy the game on launch day. There's also no way to stop them from breaking street date and selling it early. The only thing to be done is to come down on those individual businesses.
Yeah, it makes me miffed that there are sleazy people out there that either tricked a retailer into giving them a copy early or they know someone and got a copy early and they got the game before me, but until videogames go totally digital, there's just no way to stop this from happening. There's always going to be that local game store that says "screw it, people are asking, so Im selling now". There's always gonna be "My uncle works at EB Games, he'll get me a copy early."
And because this is the digital/social media age, there will be people throwing up stuff and not caring about spoilers. Even a simple youtube search I just did showed a couple small channels uploading videos and streams of the game. Might be fake, but I wasnt about to check and see.

Well, jboogieg had the right of it--I'm unhappy about a too-early launch, but for the reasons I describe I can understand why 505 had to do it, and I can't condemn them for it. The other reason I'm not very condemnatory is that yesterday I actually went out around my neighborhood and asked several local big-name retailers, namely Walmart and Gamespot, if they had it. Both places explicitly told me the game wouldn't come out until the 18th. So it seems to me that 505 did do its due diligence and inform everyone that the game wasn't to be released until the 18th, it just seems like more retailers than usual are just straight-up ignoring 505's orders, which isn't 505's fault. As folks here have mentioned, leaks happen, but I can't understand why it's so prominent with Bloodstained, it seems like we just got unlucky.
That said, I can also understand why you might wanna step back for a bit, but honestly after watching the streams I would be willing to be you will have something more heart-warming to say once you play the game. I don't wanna spoil anything, so I'll speak in generalities, but after watching one of the streams I can safely say that Bloodstained looks like SotN2, easily, It's not just me being an advertiser or a shill, I mean it plays just like the IGAvania games but there is SOOOOOO much to find and do. Even after the first 3 hours and 3 bosses, there's more content than in entire games like Dark Devotion and (from what I've heard) Hollow Knight. Combine this with the extra modes and stuff we'll be getting, and this game will blow just about every other metroidvania released in the past few years clear out of the water. Yeah, I know, again I sound like you'd expect an official mod to, but you guys know I've been a Castlevania fan for years and as one, I can sincerely say I'm very pleased by what I've seen. My happiness at the quality of the game--even BEFORE the day one patch to make it run smoother--has taken the edge off of the messed-up launch more than a little bit

There are a *lot* of factors that go into deciding a release date, most of which we'll probably never know, so let's not simplify it with "this was the best time/quarter for them to make money with it". I'm sure that was a consideration, and at this point it may be as much about recouping money as it is making it. Every week that the game goes on in development, more time passes without them having any return. This isn't a company that's making money off of their other games that fund the current one or a bunch of merch - this is the first game, and there's not a whole lot you can buy for it. Anyway, let's look at some other reasons we can appreciate as fans for the June release and how the game doesn't come out final (not counting impatience etc): - It is the closest release day (Tuesday) after the 4th anniversary of the Kickstarter's close, which was June 12, 2015. - Igarashi previously wanted to make the release timing of H1, 2018. Mid-June release means they roughly delayed a single solid year beyond that. - The game having more content coming/being patched and updated beyond the initial physical product means they stay in business and we get more things later, on top of these guys keeping their jobs and not having to disband and look for other work until they're needed again. If that were to happen, we may not be able to gather all of the requisite employees from before or it may take a while to gather that team - assuming RotN became successful enough to warrant it. It being how it currently is means that we begin a flow of content and products we want from the same, consistent team who can keep their positions. I know not everyone may be interested in that last one as it technically has nothing to do with us, but in a relevant way it really does, if we are to want something more and not rely on Kickstarter #2, which I don't think will happen again. I also think this is still relevant overall, and I just want to link it when I get the chance: bloodstained.forums.net/post/66459Great posts/thoughts on the whole thing. edit: to be clear on what gunlord said above, we're not exactly "official mods". Him, myself, Xombiemike etc are 100% volunteers and not official. For official people, that's just 505, ArtPlay, Fangamer, etc (Angel, Question, Steve, Dan, Mana and so on).

Yeah, good points purifyweirdshard . I think someone either on the Discord or here was mentioning recently how it was just about the 4th anniversary of the completion of the Kickstarter campaign, so that may be another reason to release now. And yeah, I also meant 'official mods' as in 'guys who have the title of mods on here,' not that we're employed by 505 or anything like that XD

Anyone working in software development TODAY should know a product is never really done. There's always something to patch because of how complex software has become these days with so many layers.

5 or 6 GB patch? Man, that's not even going into all the other incoming dlc. I mean, I'll have enough storage on my PS4 but still, this is annoying. I remember completing, editing, and re-reading all 80 pages of my dissertation for my Master's (it ain't no thesis, but it's no walk in the damned park with a kid and a job) having it printed and bound... only to realize a better way to make every point and having to go back to the printers again.
They want a good product. Which would you be more pissed about? No patch and constant crashes, or care taken that takes a little time to make sure you enjoy the experience you have? Are we on a tight schedule for fun?
Perspective, folks. Perspective.
You have completely misunderstood me even assuming that I'm angry. I don't like your constant patronizing writing and your random example doesn't make any sense to me nor do I care.

My tracking number finally updated today to "in-transit" with an expected delivery date of June 17th by 8PM. Parcel shipped first class mail. Also for anyone that didn't back the game and hasn't pre-ordered it yet and is interested in the PS4 version check out amazon, it's currently listed there for $32.84. That's about what you'd pay at Best Buy if you still have GCU. Not sure if this has been posted yet but a great deal none the less for those still looking.

Tuesday can't come soon enough, just to get my copy from Gamestop and holding it in my hands. I'll start up the game that evening after I get home from one of my family members apartment. The patch should be installed by that time as I will open up the game right away and get it installed before I leave.

Angel CorluxCollaborator 11 days ago @hugo - Media have access to preview content / private events etc., there are various "first dip" efforts to secure marketing for the game. Full game copies for review however are not being made available until launch. This was done to allow the team to polish the game right up until the last possible moment, but regardless it's unrealistic to expect all the backers to get copies before everyone else, including media. We want to treat backers right, but we also have to protect the success of the IP and follow basic marketing best practices.

If you pre-ordered from gamestop, you most likely can pick the game up at 9 pm eastern on monday. For awhile now, they have been allowing people to pick up physical pre-orders of games during this time period, even if its not a hyped AAA release. (Just call to make absolutely sure, but most likely they have no problem if you arrive at 9 and pick up your next day pre-orders).
The last three games I did this for was my trails of cold steel ps4, daganronpa trilogy, and that dragon marked for death game on the switch pre-orders.

I've been pretty busy in the run up to release so far...but having had yesterday with nothing to do got me thinking that it's a shame that the game has been finished for long enough to ship globally to retailers and yet they could have released to backers early if they had wanted. I'm sure there are reasons not to do this, I just don't think I would care for them honestly. Can't wait to play the game though, very excited and like everyone here been avoiding looking for gameplay footage for last couple months. Hoping for slightly early digital release. Maybe midnight at least!!!?
