The Contra game looks....ok. Better than I thought it would, but not "good" either. Baby steps, as it goes. I'd rather them cut their teeth on making new games again with that than the CV franchise. Yeah, I don't know what to say about it. I was surprised how good Neo Contra ended up being once I got my hands on it, so this could be a really fun gaming experience, but it really looks like they're doubling down on the way more overt sense of humor that Contra ReBirth and Neo Contra subscribed to. I'm on the fence as to how this will be, but I'm not exactly overjoyed by any means.
In terms of the rest of the show, Nintendo did "enough." They've got a lot of 3rd party support, even if some of it is dated. Link's Awakening really does look like a straight-up remake with just a limited dungeon-making mode added that can earn you minor extras like bottles and such. Zelda BotW 2 looks to be a Majora's Mask-type sequel, which I'm good enough with so long as they give the game a better sense of structure within the freedom and pump up the OST...oh, and give me a green tunic, please! I am curious as to how much will be new, though, since it looks like the same Hyrule. But maybe a curse happens and it shifts/poisons the land after that cinema. Luigi's Mansion 3 is basically everything one could want from a Luigi's Mansion game, but I'm just a casual fan of that series. The Smash announcements were nice but expected. In the end, nothing blew me away, but it was all solid.
Bloodstained is looking like the highlight of 2019, perhaps.
But hey, if Contra isn't the "special announcement," Castlevania may still be coming tonight.

Oh, do we know that the "special announcement" is separate to what was shown for Contra? Or you just mean the communication wasn't specific enough to rule out that there may be more/something else as the intention of that remark?

Or you just mean the communication wasn't specific enough to rule out that there may be more/something else as the intention of that remark? Pretty sure it's not Contra, since it's already been announced now and also not Pro Evolution Soccer, as that has also been announced. So it's down to Castlevania, Metal Gear, or Silent Hill, I think. The "Special Announcement" takes place "Tuesday 11th June, 2019 at 5:30 pm PDT." So, things are still to come.
EDIT: I'm going to be honest, though, having been playing the Castlevania Collection thoroughly, a remake of an old game isn't going to cut it for me. I already saw from Dracula X Chronicles how limiting a graphical remake can be.

Really? No one is hyped that the Seiken Densetsu collection is finally outside of Asia?

Mr. Welldone Switch in the Eshop later today, if it's not out already. Edit: Also. Did anyone notice that Link's Awakening have a very basic Dungeon Maker within it? Is Nintendo planning on making Zelda Dungeon Maker game they are doing with Mario?

So it's down to Castlevania, Metal Gear, or Silent Hill, I think.
The latter two are definitely sore spots post-Survive and cancellation of Silent Hills. Given Death Stranding starting to ramp up, it would look like Konami is trying to counter that with announcements for either series (almost as much as Konami is rumored to have a Bloodstained counter).
I'm honestly not sure if any of these are good moves (if they're really trying to counter Bloodstained or Death Stranding, it just reads as petty to me), but given the overall positive reactions to the Castlevania Collection and the Belmonts in Smash, that would probably be the better direction to go.

Announcing a new Castlevania now could be pretty bad timing for Bloodstained to be honest. Could confuse people on what to get and take sales away from Bloodstained. I'm generally kind of disappointed that Bloodstained was shown or advertised nowhere at E3 this year. Seems like a missed opportunity and the launch could kind of go under in the wake of all the E3 hype. So I think they should have made that connection.

Agreed, and partially because Death Stranding is hardly anything like a Metal Gear game anyway. edit: E3 just didn't work out considering how much they had to do in preparing for launch. I think it's fine - and after all, some amount of negativity would arise too from "this game is at E3 yet again? How many times now? Still not out?"etc. A new Castlevania would be a net positive for Bloodstained, as Angel and myself both figure it. The collection certainly works out that way - it whets the appetite for something actually new, or rather an actual Iga-style CV since those aren't on the set anyway. A "new" CV, even whether it's good or bad eventually, brings attention to the idea of these games as a whole where before there was none, and sales would net higher rather than decrease from a distraction probably. Often if a type/style of game is getting a signal boost in the market, it works out better for it overall than if it's the only horse in the race.

Optimally, there are no enemies in business, only missed opportunities. All these collection releases just aid in creating attention for Bloodstained.
Dammit, I'm excited!

Indeed, purifyweirdshard . Honestly, the only way a Castlevania announcement could be bad in my opinion would be "oh, by the way, we've got a new game that's ready to be played right now; go buy it!" Though the only way I can see that happening is with Grimoire of Souls, and since Bloodstained isn't on mobile phones, there isn't market competition there. So yeah, I think it would be just fine for Bloodstained and only make Konami look petty. Not that they don't already...

I'm going to call it. This was one of the worst E3s in years and it's been downhill for a while, bright spots notwithstanding.
This is from a Dragon Quest and Banjo Kazooie fan by the way, so the best announcements for me were two characters in Smash, one that I've always wanted (Banjo) and one I didn't even realize that I wanted (Dragon Quest Hero) and a superior port of the best JRPG in about 8 years. (DQ XI) Seiken Densetsu 3/Trails of Mana was too little, MUCH too late to be frank, even if it looks sweet. No More Heroes 3 is hard to get super excited for with Modern Grasshopper Studios.
As much as I like the concept of Cyberpunk 2077, it's obviously going through some trouble. Keanu Reeves was a recast of a character and it's been going on 7 years in development. I like CD Projekt Red and I want to see the game succeed, but those rumors of trouble are starting to sound accurate. But this was a game that was already announced.
Everything else? It was either I knew about it already with Doom: Eternal and Cyberpunk or it looked downright awful or the conferences were boring. Even Devolver's parody dropped the ball.
Two DLC characters and a port...that was my completely positive takeaway from this E3. Wow.

I really hope no one here was excited for Shenmue 3 on PC because it just got confirmed as an Epic Games Store exclusive. @bloodymiri Yeah the thing with Shenmue 3 in my opinion is that it was always pretty shady as far as the Kickstarter aspect went, the kickstarter was announced after Bloodstained had been such a success and it rode that popularity, but more importantly the kickstarter was announced at E3, by Sony themselves at their own press conference. What that means (to me) is that there was already tens of thousands if not more money invested into this project, Sony wouldn't have put it out there unless they were already invested in it since planning something for E3 is NOT cheap. Shenmue 3 KickstarterThey also were preparing to accept in excess in over 11 million in funding. But if Sony was already invested like I believe, there was literally no need to ask for that money. I tried making a thread about this back in the day to discuss it, but it wasn't a very popular subject. I'm sure not everyone involved is a crook but I do believe the reality is that Shenmue 3's entire Kickstarter was at best nothing but a fan paid advertisement campaign. To an extent that's true of Bloodstained as well however I've never seen any evidence that suggested that Bloodstained would have been made anyways nor that it's creation and funding was secured long before the Kickstarter happened. In fact I've seen evidence of the opposite with companies slipping in and out of the campaign and plans changing. This sorta thing is another reason why I would not want a second fan-funding for another Bloodstained game. The line between giving the fans an opportunity and exploiting them to maximize profits would get thinner and thinner even with the best of intentions on all sides. It's simply not a sustainable long term business model.

The line between giving the fans an opportunity and exploiting them to maximize profits would get thinner and thinner even with the best of intentions on all sides. It's simply not a sustainable long term business model. It felt kinda shady to me as well just based on the reward tiers and the stretch goals (such as $125 for a physical game, a cheap plastic toy, a piece of useless DLC, name in credits and first access to the game via a trial version demo or a $2.7 million stretch goal for French subtitles), but despite that I ended up backing it mostly out of curiosity since I had never played a Shenmue game yet was always hearing about it, somewhat fortunately (for now) I only backed for a physical PS4 copy. Though I will say you do make a few good points and now that even more shit has started to hit the fan (namely the discovery that physical PC backers are no longer getting a game on a disc and are instead getting a DVD case with an ES download card. Plus the discovery that not only is some of the backer exclusive DLC content from the $100 to $250 tiers being sold as part of a $75 Digital Deluxe Edition, but that said edition also comes with a season pass which none of the backers are...for now at least.... not getting and didn't even know was coming in the first place. On top of that anyone who backed at $100 or higher as part of their tier rewards were told that they would be the first people in the world to play the game via a trial version/demo for backing at those tiers, those backers have yet to get their demo when it was discovered that not only were they not the first people to play the game, but rather games journalist were and that later on the game was apparently available for anyone at this year's E3 to play) which really solidifies just how shady they really are/were.
