BLOODSTAINED: RITUAL OF THE NIGHT'S SWITCH PAX EAST DEMO LEFT FANS WORRIED, BUT 505 GAMES PROMISES KINKS WILL BE IRONED OUT BY LAUNCH Bloody hell Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was on display at PAX East, and people had their first chance to go hands-on with the Switch version. Unfortunately, first impressions were not very good. Multiple reports of an unwieldy framerate came in, as well as some major controller input lag when playing docked. Not exactly the best first impression for the Switch version, but 505 Games wants fans to know they shouldn't worry. People who have checked out the Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night demo previously were doing so on the PC version, which has been heavily optimized. The Switch version, according to 505, hasn't received that optimization yet. Apparently there's a lot of work to be done, but 505 says the final game should run much closer to what you see on PC. We'll have to take 505 at their word on this one. I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I do have to wonder why 505 decided to show off the Switch version in such a wonky state at PAX East.

It's a legitimate question. When you show things off, you want them to be their best, as if nothing else, showcasing a glitchy or otherwise poor build makes people wonder if you're rushing or were under pressure to get it out quickly. On the other hand, even a very early build can provide guidance for bug hunting and optimization to be done. Even if it makes them look a little bad, it may be worth it in the long run if the specific complaints they've gotten from people (FPS drops and input lag) help them figure out exactly what to polish in the future and exactly what problems there are.

Yeah, I hope things improve. I was not happy to hear this initial reaction. I'm still on the fence about the Switch in general. I want to get on board in some ways, but between Metroid Prime 4's delay and the consistent rumors of one or more new models this year for the console, I feel uncertain. A lot of the games I want to play on it, the retro collections of Mega Man, Castlevania, and Contra, plus the new Mega Man 11, are available on other platforms. I've been holding out waiting for the right time for the Switch, especially considering Bloodstained, so I hope things go well.

Huh, this is quite the bump in the road. I do hope these problems are fixed soon, because one of the things I'm getting is a Switch digital version.

My take is that since the game was featured in the last Nintendo Direct they wanted to have the game on PAX and it had to be running on Switch. Goofball and Co. knew the game wasn’t in its best shape yet but couldn’t pass on the opportunity of skipping PAX and refuse Nintendo’s support (the game was denied in both 505 and Nintendo’s booth!).
So it might’ve been a “pick your poison” type of situation. Show your perfectly playable but unoptimized Switch versión on the booth of one of the biggest brands in gaming where you’ll probably have your biggest audience OR skip the event entirely and not get the publicity you’d get from all of this.
I wouldn’t worry too much. The game is still months away I’m sure they’ll take care of it by then but one thing’s for sure: tame your expectations because chances of the game running exactly the same on the comparatively underpowered Switch VS on PS4/XB1 (let alone PC) are pretty much close to zero. And that’s why I resisted the temptation and stuck to my PS4 backer version instead of the crapshoot I knew it was going to be the newer but weaker Switch.
