I honestly hope the marketing department at 505 is going to give you a cut once the game is released! Your posts are always very comprehensive.

Reading the articles and the comments, I get the impression that it's not just players, but the gaming media that doesn't know how things work in this industry.
"Delayed for two years from the originally targeted release date" is par for the course for game development.
What happens is that not all games are delayed once the publisher's publicly committed to a release date. You can bet though, that by the time a game's been announced, there's a good chance it's been delayed internally for a year or so, sometimes more.
Honestly, if you think Kickstarter release dates are more like "guidelines", you've never seen the release dates used to get games green-lighted by management.

Time 4 Tea Ha! I would like that. dareka Heh, i always like to give the same example, DOOM 2016. 2007: John Carmack, co-founder of and then lead developer at id Software, indicated that Doom 4 was in development at QuakeCon on August 3, 2007. 2008: game was announced. 2009: multiplayer mode revealed to be developed in a "separate" way. 2011: Carmack said DOOM 4 was still in development, using a new "super script" called Superset C++ 2012: Team announced that DOOM 4 was, indeed, going to be a reboot. 2013: Carmack left ID software. Inside information revealed that DOOM 4 was in development hell and that, actually, DOOM 4 was redone from scratch in 2011 because 2011 version was too much like Call of Duty. 2014: Closed doors teaser trailer at E3 2014. 2015: Gameplay trailer. 2016: Game was released, on May 13, 2016.

A game can only be delayed if there is an official date.
Our closest official date was 2019. Now it's Summer 2019.
Before that it was either A. Placeholders or B. "We hope to be finished 2018".
The media really needs to dig through and separate the fiction from the facts.

Nah, 2018 - '19 was an actual delay. "Summer" is the window specifically given within the release year it was delayed to. The way you phrase it, there'd be *no* actual delay, but in truth there definitely was at least the case for one. We all know and saw Angel say "definitely 2018" back last year, and it was at the end of trailers.

Any of you guys ever get excited for a thing to the level of 'gosh, I sure hope some crap doesn't happen that kills me before I get a chance to play it'? This is getting there.
Nevermind, y'know, family and loved ones. I need to be alive for this game.

dareka What you say about internal delays is pretty spot on when compared with my own game-industry experience (along with what I've heard from gamedev-friends). Most people on the outside of the developer / publisher sphere really have no idea about it though since the industry likes to keep its secrets.

Most people on the outside of the developer / publisher sphere really have no idea about it though since the industry likes to keep its secrets. Right, but with a Kickstarter, you know everything from the beginning; so all the things publishers normally keep to themselves are out in the open for the first time, and people freak out. Looking at how game elements such as character rosters, classes and such are regularly leaked before they're announced, you'd think the industry doesn't know how to keep its secrets; but it does, since most if not all of those leaks come from QA (i.e. testers), the people who learn about games only once they're close to being finished. Artists, programmers and game designers talk among themselves, but they never leak to the press. They know how the industry works, but they keep it to themselves; and when they share things over a drink, there's an understanding that what's talked about in developer circles stays in developer circles.

Kickstarter can't really show releasedate, because 1. You have to write something in that empty spot before you even can have a goal. 2. If a goal is met and you even surpassed it with additional features, then the date, if it even at the first place was accurate not so much anymore. 3. Kickstarter do not allow you to change these things. We do not know everything, but we do know huge chunks of it.

And that has good reasons - just today I signed an NDA for my new job. If I talked to outsiders about pretty much anything, I'd risk losing my job and ending up in court. From what I understand, it's pretty much the same almost everywhere else.
