Since we have a specialized section for Bloodstained and Castlevania music, here is a thread where everyone here could talk about all the video music!
Here, you guys can talk about your favourite/least favourite video game music / composers, games with great music, games with horrible music... just generally all things video game music!
I start... Other than Castlevania, the video games that contains some of the best music has to be Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturn. The way that it is played sounded so twisted, yet so right for the given apocalyptic and chaotic setting the game is in. I could listen to most of the tracks on the OST on repeat for the whole day and wouldn't ever get sick of it! One of my favourite tracks on the game has to be the one playing in the Hospital, it's so creepy, but relaxing at the same time, it feels... hypnotic...
My other favourite video game soundtrack has to be Silent Hill 3, there is just so much variety! From calm piano tracks to violent, chaotic mix of instruments to ominous chanting. I find a majority of Silent Hill music makes me really think.

Basically (almost) everything Square had a hand in. They've always focused on music ever since Nobou Uematsu proved music meant something in video games. Nintendo has been one of the leads too, starting with Mario. That World 1-1 music..., though to me SMB 3 has the most memorable music, but Mario 64 is no slouch either. Capcom has had some hit tracks here and there. Mega Man has some great stuff, and Guile's theme goes with everything. Meanwhile, Breath of Fire 4 had some great music. Atlus has been on the rise since Persona 3. They came into the realization that they were actually pretty good at this music stuff, and keep coming out with hit after hit in the Persona line, at the least. Konami has great sound direction, but I never could rely on them for consistent quality music. Most of it can ONLY be considered background music, and has no listening value other than for atmosphere. As for American developers, I don't feel comfortable putting my money on... well... any of them. They can churn out some great stuff from time to time, but once you escape the indie scene, it's all atmospheric background music. It's great to give you a certain vibe to games, but you'll never be actively listening to it, or at least I won't. If I were to point out anything in particular, it would be Guild Wars (1). Although it had mostly atmospheric music, it didn't solely rely on the game to provide that atmosphere, at least not for all of it. Take this one for example: Although Retro's work with Metroid Prime tells me not all American developers are without hope.

Jim, hahaha...I thought I was the only one that liked SNES Sim City music. Yeah, it just kind of...worked really well? Interesting that you list Crystalis there, I haven't thought to go back and really give that game's music a good listen. I can remember all of it, and it was pretty atmospheric, but I haven't had it on my computer/listened on youtube.
I have a LOT of video game music, lol. Much more than actual music, which I have a significant amount of, too, but here are some of my favorites:
Valkyrie Profile: I don't necessarily like all of Motoi Sakuraba's stuff, but VP1/2 are great. FF4, 6 of course. Also FFT. Anything done by SSH: This guy started as a remixer. He has now done the OST for a fighting game, Koihime Enbu, which is -amazing- to me. I like it better than Guilty Gear's music, which I'm also a fan of. Mega Man, again, obviously. Lufia 2's battle themes. Thunder Force. Various fighting game music.
thrashinuva mentioned Western games' music. I think that Diablo actually did pretty well with this. The work that went into the Tristram songs in particular is certainly noteworthy. Most of the time, though? Yeah, just background stuff. You don't even consciously think about there being music. That's one of my gripes with Nether Realm fighting games (MK, Injustice, etc), there's just no hype or engaging feeling going on with them because of the dull colors and barely there music.

Ah, one of these threads. Well, time for my obligatory Ar Tonelico post. Ar Tonlico is an RPG that revolves around the idea of singing as magic. In most cases, the fighters are secondary damage dealers, with their real purpose being to guard the caster against attacks so she doesn't get interrupted(spells are channeled and their strength grows the longer you let them build). It also has visual novel sections that let you form a connection with your spellcasters. In any case, as a song-focused game, the music tends to be spectacular. The writer even created a full language called Hymmnos(which you can read about here and here that is used for a lot of the lyrics(though some is also in Japanese). Here are some examples:

That will save me from doing it, thanks Scars. I Love Ar Tonelico's songs and Hymmnos language. They're exquisite to my ears.
(Also, it's supposed to be EXEC_PURGER for Misha, I know it's not your fault but I just had to correct it.)

Have you people played The Binding of Isaac? I find the OST great, give it a chance and listen to it if you haven't!
Also I think the original Isaac OST (Edmund McMillen) is the best (for me). I think is much darker and mournful than The Binding of Isaac Rebirth OST (Ridiculon) , yet there are masterpieces in this one too.

Another great and often overlooked soundtrack is the OST for Elemental Gearbolt. It has some of the best orchestrated music you'll ever find in a light gun game.

Old topic resurrection! (and/or paging Dragon_of_Dojima ) I can't stop listening to the songs from the various entries in the Yakuza series. They're all amazing, span a TON of genres, and sound great while checking off all the points I consider to be necessary for good video game music: having a unique sound that fits the situation, being memorable, and being a good piece of music in its own right. Of particular interest is this awesome boss theme from Yakuza 0: This intense chase music from Yakuza 4: And an arrangement of a classic in Project X Zone 2:

Anything done by SSH: This guy started as a remixer. He has now done the OST for a fighting game, Koihime Enbu, which is -amazing- to me. I like it better than Guilty Gear's music, which I'm also a fan of. A bit late for a quote, but thank you for mentioning SSH. He's the reason why I got into danmaku shooters - listened to his soundtrack for eXceed 3rd, and that was the sole reason why I bought the game. Since then danmaku shooters have become one of my favourite genres. If you like metal soundtracks, check it out. This is one of the best boss themes I've ever heard: Of course, I got hooked in Touhou, and most of the appeal of those games are in their music and in the ungodly amount of fan-art it generates. My favourite Touhou music doujin circle is Demetori. I listen to them on a daily basis. Once again, if you like power/prog metal and Touhou, you absolutely have to check them out.
I'm a huge fan of Jake Kaufman, and you guys have no idea how overjoyed I was when we got to know he was going to work on Bloodstained. He's amazing at his OSTs, Chiptunes and Remixes too. Crystal Flash (Super Metroid mega medley)
FX4 is one of his original chiptune albuns, so it's not exactly a game soundtrack, but this one is amazing:
Yoko Shimomura is one of my favourites too. Here's an amazing song from one of the best RPGs I've ever played: The Phantasy Star Online series also has some good songs, particular the first game. It's hard to put a genre to it... it's very electronic mixed with neo-classical. It's amazing. Some examples:
This last one is long, but DAMN IT, IT IS WORTH IT
Also, Ys.
You guys should also check out Eschatos. Really, really great 16-bit-like OST: Other soundtracks I highly enjoy are Final Fantasy (especially IV, VIII, XII and Tactics), anything done by Daisuke Ishiwatari, most of the Ace Attorney soundtrack and many, many others.

You really went in on that post, perfect prosecutor sir. Very good.
I first heard SSH in Guilty Gear combo videos in the early 2000s, looked him up and found a lot of remixes of games I loved (Lufia 2, FF4-6, Thunderforce, etc). I have a thread about virt's stuff in the music section, actually, too.

99% of ocremix, i seriously have like 20 gigs of it in a massive playlist on my ipod, looots of music anything Zelda Castlevania or FF, almost everything else square has made pretty much FFMQ doesnt get enough love, for how simplistic the game is the ost and the remixed tracks are pretty badass, especially the final area and boss BoF \^_^/ Ys, all of them, but heres 1&2 Faxanadu yeee Phantasy Star 4 ^_^ HELL FUCKING YES, ALL THE YES \ / theres a lot more games, but then it starts to get into the categories of i either like a couple songs and listen to the rest as bg music, or ambient music that is good but much better when its with the game (re, silent hill, etc), or its in my list to play but i havent gotten around to it so i really havent listened to the music yet

Since nobody else brought this one up - Doom. And Doom 2. These soundtracks are damn amazing, take for example Into Sandy's city from Doom 2. Also Touhou music. And it's remixes. And remixes of these remixes. And... you get the picture. But I believe that got already brought up in a different music related thread.

999 has such a good soundtrack. I'm so happy that Zero Tie Dilemma is happening.
You know what game has an underrated OST? Tales of Legendia. I've basically come to the realization that it's the best Tales game because the gameplay budget accidentally went to the story department and music-bending warlock Go Shiina for the soundtrack. Here's some example of how eclectic and all over the place this game's music is.
- Slow paced, relaxing full orchestra - Easily my favorite song in the game. Strings, horns, a piano, and funky electronica. This song has everything. - The main boss theme. Game version, the OST version just isn't up to snuff in my opinion. Listen to the bass here! - Vocal version of the game's main theme.
