Hey everyone!
Just a quick note : english is not my native language, so please excuse me if I sometimes use a wrong expression
I just finished the backers demo 100% (all weapons, items, crystal shards, etc.) so here are my impressions of it:
The gameplay is really good, reminds me of SotN (Symphony of the Night) and subsequent metroidvanias quite a lot, which is a good thing. The different types of weapons are fun to use, except maybe the whip which I think should have more range to differentiate it some more. Something along the lines of Miriam's whip in CotM (Curse of the Moon) seems more appropriate to me. The two handed swords should also be a bit slower imho...right now they attack almost as fast as one handed ones!
Nice touch on the special moves of some weapon types, maybe you could extend that concept to more of them.
I miss Alucard's downwards kick though...I loved bouncing off of enemies and candles! Fist weapons would be nice too.
The walk/run and jump animations feel a bit "floaty", once again when compared to previous metroidvanias where your character seemed to react to input in a much more "crisp" and immediate manner. Maybe it's because of the 3D models vs sprites in the other games?
Graphics are...meh. The modelisation is ok, but the textures are pretty poor: the background textures are really simplistic, especially in the village where textures are almost PS2 era, and the castle is just grey, it lacks colors and details, honestly it makes me regret SotN's amazing visuals.
The character textures lack in definition, which is especially noticeable when they talk during cutscenes...they're really blurry and full of blotches and poor quality gradients.
Sound design is ok, but the music is not very memorable (to me at least). I listen back to the OST of SotN or CotM with a great deal of enjoyment and, right now, I don't see me doing the same for this game. I'll admit that I'm a sucker for "retro" sound tracks (does SotN qualify as retro??)...but it's weird, seeing as CotM and Ritual of the Night share their soundtracks, although with different arrangements.
Maybe I'll change my mind after hearing more of it
I should clarify this point: it's not that the musical scores in the demo aren't great, it's just that, they don't sound as "gothic" or "heroic/tragic" as SotN (especially) or CotM did...they don't convey the same emotions to me.
There is a serious problem with the way Miriam screams like a madwoman almost every time she strikes, it becomes really irritating super fast. Please add an option to adjust the frequency of these shouts.
I noticed some text mistakes in menus or item descriptions (bat feathers anyone? ), but nothing too serious.
All in all I feel like the foundation for a great game is already in place, it just needs some more polish and adjustments.
Seeing as it is still in beta stage, I'm quite confident these slight issues will be addressed in time!
I'm curious about other players' opinion on these points, please feel free to reply and tell me what you think.
Keep up the good work ArtPlay!
