I looked at the new Bloodstained E3 gameplay from IGN and I only had one issue. The characters talking didn't look that good and I also thought I'd prefer some nice character portraits instead. A lot of people mentioned that in the comments of the youtube video so I thought I'd share this here too and ask what everyone else thinks. I understand that at this point in time their decision might be final regarding this.

Yeah, same thoughts here. If they could fix the actual dialogue animation, that would be great, but I don't think that's a realistic thing to expect given what we've seen. 2D portraits seem like a pretty optimal solution.

I can't help but feel the dialogue animation is problematic because of the chosen shader they went with the characters but what the hell do I know. But yeah, some nice Ayami Kojima style style portraits can't disappoint.

I think the general consensus I have seen all over the internet over different forums (4chan, reddit, youtube and here) agree that portraits are a better option for presenting the dialog. I personally would love still pictures showing different emotions Persona or Fire Emblem style. Completely onboard with the idea.

Different portraits showing the character actual expressions will do, not only it will fix the problem of showing the zoomed in models but it will fix the lip syncing problem too. I imagine character portraits won't cost much too, only draw one when a character is mad, happy, crying, smiling and neutral

I'm a little surprised character portraits didn't make a return here, considering they've been something of a reliable fixture in IGA's games. Of course, it's entirely possible that character portraits were always planned but just not implemented yet, but in either case, I certainly hope to see them.

I think it's because IGA just never worked with high-res character models in his Castlevanias (outside of the 3D ones which also didn't use portraits for dialogue) before. I haven't looked at the animations yet as I'm waiting for the Beta to take a look at everything so I can't comment on whether I like the change myself.

As you may have seen me mention elsewhere on the forum, we're doing official beta feedback threads here on the forum again so this (and all things like it) will be heard and collected to present to the team. One of the main focuses of the beta backer demo is to gather feedback from the backers to be presented to the team, like the 2016 one. This particular item has been quite popularly mentioned already, on many busy internet discussion outlets besides our own, so no worries on this specific thing being heard.

I'm ok with the full body shots for cutscenes, only if they make them interact more, like the Bravely Default major cutscenes. It's very similar, but with full body animations relative for each scene and better lip syncing.
Also, from watching the e3 demo through YouTube, I noticed 30fps and frequent screen tearing. If that's a result of including full body shots, then I'll gladly take the portrait dialogue instead. I want to play this at a smooth 60fps, though the character models look beautiful.

The 3D models are really bad. Portraits would look much better, since the art already looks good. I'm thinking a few static images (standard pose, thinking pose, happy, shocked, etc.) Not many, but it wouldn't draw as much attention to itself as the poor 3D models. It cheapens the look of the game.

Thank you, it's a good thing to know as I think this something that can't be that hard to fix/change and a lot of us would love some stylish portraits like that.

Character portraits would be great, but I don't mind full-body animations, I just wish the animations were more expressive and less awkward looking than they presently are.

I'd rather they stick to their intention/vision and fix what they've got. It may also be a bit harder of a change to "just do portraits" than we think it is (namely, they don't have Inti Creates' artist to draw them).
They have Mana, of course, but her role has been stated expressly as promotional materials only. I'd be down for hers in-game, but that's yet another art style changeup that they'd have to kind of somehow match Natsume's with (and honestly, probably too much work on her lol, she's already doing like 5 jobs).

purifyweirdshardI very much agree that while I'd have preferred they did the portraits or improved the models expression abilities, it's not a matter that the game should be delayed over but rather a lets try something different next time around issue.

I've been thinking about this on and off.
Option 1) Tweak the animation a bit or just zoom out so the de-sync of the dialog isn't noticeable. Option 2) Use portraits. Option 3) Just don't have the characters' mouths move AT ALL during the dialog.
The portrait option runs into the problem of having head gear show up in the portrait. They can't create a portrait for every possible head gear Miriam could put on. That would be too much.
