I have no doubt that there will probably be save rooms like in the past, which I am perfectly fine with, but do you think that the pickup-and-setdown convenience of most modern games with checkpoints and/or manual saves work well in an Igavania of 2018?

I'd prefer the usual combinations of save rooms and a "Save and quit" button to restart the game from the room I left off in.

Yeah. These games don't really need a "save anywhere" thing. It needs all the tension it can get imo.
Checkpoints...not even sure how that would work in a giant non-linear castle.

I second the previously used methods: Save rooms and a"suspend"feature.
If we were to modernize this idea they could add a save and continue feature where character stats, items, and all progress gets saved but when the player loads they are placed at the last save room.
I'm also not against a means to save and continue from anywhere form either. I think this works best for incredibly linear games with loads of plot that can't be skipped, open world games littered with items to collect, and any other game where the player would be more than mildly inconvenienced by reverting to a 10 minute old save.

I know the PS4 and Vita already have functions that basically allow you to suspend a game, so you wouldn't need to rely on save rooms anyway.

It's pretty much a must for portable games, but should be fine for gander as well.

I prefer save rooms like SotN, Super Metroid etc.Checkpoints or saving anywhere dont match with metroidvania imo.
