...If they still plan on releasing it first half of this year.

Hey everyone, please keep in mind that we have always only stated "2018" as an official confirmed launch window. I know a lot of people refer back to Iga during certain communications where he made statements like "I hope to release by mid 2018" or "I would like to" etc., but that's not an official release date. Your best bet is to keep expectations in check until you hear and/or see an official release date announced by yours truly and my compatriots here at 505 Games.

That's also assuming there are no delays at all.. I mean I know people hate hearing delay, especially with how games like mighty no 9 turned out. But the simple fact is LOTS of games get delays. Realistically, I wouldn't be too surprised if this game gets one as well, not because I don't trust the devs or their talent, but.. it's just something I expect in general.

ghaleon Delays don't bother me at all as long as the funding to pay the developers is there. I put my money in so that IGA could release a game right, not soon. If they need more time, they should take more time. Years after the game is released, no one will care about the development cycle; only the end result will matter.

I also had in mind that Bloodstained would be released within the first six months. If that is not officially confirmed yet, it's okay. We also need to remember that Bloodstained was first designed as $ 500.000 Metroidvania game that would be "a bit bigger than Symphony of the Night". In the end, it turned into "IGA's biggest castle" with 5.5 million of funds and 28 funded stretch goals, that had to be basically re-created from scratch in 2016 due to Inti Creates lack of experience with procedural generation (the game's main programming to create assets and scenarios), when DICO and 505 games came in to help. Nowadays, many games are released inside a tiny frame release date and show up with terrible flaws, requiring "day one patches" and fixes. Of course, as everyone, i want to play the game as soon as possible and i would be kinda mad if the game would be postponed to 2019, that WOULD shake my confidence on the dev team FOR THE FIRST TIME, but i'm fine of waiting until December 31 2018, if that is what it takes to have a great Igavania game i'm waiting for so long to play.

I certainly can't wait to have the game in my library and play it as soon as possible. Whenever they manage to release it is fine, but I am impatient haha
I don't think I'll ever follow a game's development as closely as I did this time though. Continuous expectations build up, impatience on my side, having to deal with misinformed sheit ralkers on the net and a long wait overall... This community is cool but I don't believe I'll commit this much to another game in the future haha

well I rather enjoy it lol
I tend to avoid the sillier corners of the internet though, where the larger mass of misinformation would be. A lot of folks out there are determined to be informed wrongly about something because they don't want to like it lol. I'm not going up against that

I would like to get an update that shows substantial progress (which I feel they should have at this point). I honestly have no idea where they are in development of the game (which is sad for a community-funded game with a forum such as ours). I know where I think they should be. But those two things are most likely no where near each other.
I feel like they should be pretty close to completing the main game at this point (or are already finished) and starting to work on the stretch goals and extra modes, etc.

therein lies the issue though, we as gamers see the small tidbits that have a lot of wow factor, but thats maybe 10% or less of what is actually going on on the devs side, and its incredibly hard to explain things like development timelines, code cycles, optimization, timing, rng, tiny adjustments like lighting, animation, enemy ai, LOTS of testing its just something we need to be patient for, they are further along than we think but showing off a code module or an untextured enemy or a sheet of flowcharts or math will make a large portion of us look at it crosseyed and be like "what is this?!?"

I feel like they should be pretty close to completing the main game at this point (or are already finished) and starting to work on the stretch goals and extra modes, etc. From the last update I generally don't feel that's the case, if they've already finished the main game, the Japanese themed area we've seen recently should be filled with enemies. There are games that costs 4 or 5 years to shape up, and considering changing the developer might cost extra, I personally don't mind if there's another delay.

This may seem a bit naive, but what causes the infamous "crunch time" to happen? Is it basically putting together separately developed pieces or is it something else entirely?

Redogan Elfina Ashfield For the purpose of showing off the Japanese themed stage, they may very well have removed whatever enemies they have prepared for that area. It doesn't have light fixtures for crystal/coin drops either, probably also so we can focus on the environment and the music. I imagine both of those things are pretty well finished, or almost to their final state. The content of the updates isn't exactly to show us "from this you can tell we're 85% done", which if filled with all pieces of the game would give away exactly what will be in that part of the game, but the updates are rather to show singular pieces of the giant puzzle. As Astraoth said too, even if they wanted to give us a lot of granular data on exactly how much/what they've done, that'd be really hard to quantify. IGA is an artist that may take a while to be satisfied with the work, too. The more hard data on progress they give out, as well, the more potential circumstances of backlash and upset when they need to change or redo something, which is almost an inevitability in something this big imo. Some of you may/may not remember "August" for last year's demo, which was never an official promise but mentioned and pieced together in two interviews out of hundreds. There's a reason that intention never got stated more than it did lol.

its really hard to explain crunch time because it can often mean different things to different teams, it could be anything from theres a deadline coming up we will make barring some weird unforeseen circumstance but we should stay aware of it, to we just lost 3 months off our timeline because some marketing exec decided we should release just before christmas rather than feb because they figure the game will sell solely on the name/hype not whether its actually finished and now we have to cram an inordinate amount of man hours into not a lot of time, to an ff15 situation (crapcrapcrap crystal tools cant do what this game needs, now we have to scrap a huge portion of what weve coded and start building a whole new engine for ps4)

Yeah "Crunch Mode" can mean/include a lot of different kinds of work. If could mean things like doing an asset production/implementation assembly line where everyone's just getting all the extra stuff IN the game and setting it all up. At that point its a little like a burger restaurant kitchen where people are just throwing toppings on buns and sliding them down to the next guy. It probably looks more like data entry though. Dropping in this thing, entering its values, checking it for basic compatibility and functionality, slide it down and repeat.
It could also mean debugging. Figuring out why this one monster flips inside out and displays a McDonald's ad or something equally random. Considering the usual amount of enemies, visual effects, sound effects, etc. an Igavania has there's a lot of little things that can and will cause hiccups and that kind of work is usually a slog.
The only real universal aspect of "crunch mode" periods of game development is that they're not fun. Hours, days, weeks just grinding away at to-do lists. Often slipping over into nights, weekends, and holidays. It's definitely work.

As always, I remain patient. Waiting for this game, and hearing the occasional news about it, is enough for me right now.
Even if this game ends up taking until sometime in 2019 [or even 2020] to release, I won't have any problem with waiting. ^ Of course, I still doubt it will take that long; I just retain optimism about the potential of this game.

It seemed to me that it was never gonna come early 2018. They haven't even really PROMOTED it yet and by that I mean show off trailers for the game with voice acting. So far it's still been kicking it in kickstarter mode for the most part.
