E3 2017 Demo from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night presented us with two news regarding Shards. One of them is the Skill Shard and the other, the Shard Candlestick. Wondering how exactly they will integrate in the game, how close they are to some Igavania's mechanics and other things, i wanted to discuss something about them, as always, in the form of questions and open discussion.
The sixth type of shard, white in color. It seems to offer special movement abilities and it is probably tied with progression abilities (abilities you need to proceed in the game and reach new areas). Skill Shards can be turned ON and OFF and, for now, we know of a single Skill Shard, Double Jump.
Almost nothing was said about Skill Shards besides that. It's quite obvious that Skill Shards are based (almost a rip off) from Ability Soul type from Aria and Dawn of Sorrow. Gray Souls you could obtain in the game, where, in most cases, it offered skills to progress in the game an had a ON and OFF switch. And Ability Souls themselves are basically Symphony of the Night and Harmony of Dissonance's Relic system, integrated to the game's plot.
Shard Candlesticks are tall objects that holds a Shard. They can be destroyed and the Shard within is obtained.
Shard Candlesticks, again, are based (also almost a rip off) from Soul Holders from Aria of Sorrow (Dawn of Sorrow has only one), tall objects that had a Soul inside of it, from a demon that for some reason didn't materialize in the game.
At E3 2017 Demo, there was a Shard Candlestick for Fire Cannon (Shard from Morte Cannon) but they probably just put it there to show how the power was after the graphics improvement. They also mentioned that they put the Shard Candlestick for Double Jump there, to not "overpopulate" the Demo with bosses. That either means that the real Double Jump in the game will be obtained from a boss OR that a boss will be protecting the Double Jump Shard Candlestick.
Questions and Discussions
Considering all that, here comes the questions:
1) In Aria of Sorrow, most Ability Souls were inside Soul Holders, not in enemies or bosses. In Dawn of Sorrow, almost all Ability Souls were in Bosses. What do you prefer for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night? Since most Skill Shards are probably going to be progression abilities, they can't, overall, be simply random powers you obtain from common enemies. They need to be "somewhere". By putting Skill Shards on Bosses, that is a way to make a Boss battle mandatory because you need it's ability, tying up the Boss battle with the game progression in a more interesting way than simply making the Boss a obstacle. But, by putting most Skill Shards inside Shard Candlesticks, you can free up bosses to have their own powers as Shards (with the Shard Candlestick right after the Boss Room). What do you think about this?
2) Aria of Sorrow had an Ability Soul called Galamoth (obtainable from a Soul Holder, Galamoth demon is not in the game). Galamoth Soul was able to "recognize places where time has stopped". The ONLY use for it is in a single corridor, where a single enemy stop and rewind time, making it impossible go to through. And that area is optional. So, basically, the game has a soul that almost works as a "key" and is completely useless after that. Do you think it's okay if Bloodstained ends up having something similar? A Skill Shard (or even any kind of Shard) that has a single use, at a single place, and ends up useless later?
3) Do you believe the game will have Shard Candlesticks with other types of Shards, or only with Skill Shards? The Demo has a Shard Candlestick with Fire Cannon, but it was only for testing purposes.
4) Discuss anything else related to Skill Shards and Shard Candlesticks, if you want.
That's all folks!
SKILL SHARDS
The Skill Shard "Double Jump".
