So, in the next update for Unreal, a buzzy aspect of it (for me) is that input latency will be reduced. It's a well-documented problem with SF5, an Unreal 4 fighting game, that it has significant delay, in part from the engine and in part being designed with that almost as a feature... But anyway, they identified some things while looking at Frontline that could be adjusted to reduce this by 66 ms (in a 30 hz game, half that in 60, 2 or 1 frames respectively). Responsiveness and delay in inputs is a very important thing to the feel of 2D games, platformers certainly, and I'm always pushing for the least amount of latency possible. The other features added recently look really neat, too. What I'm wondering is, will Bloodstained be able to update to/incorporate Unreal 4.19 when that is released, or are they sticking with the version release that was contemporary to when they began? My understanding is that it's more complicated than just a software update, things might have to be redone/recompiled, but I'm not sure - I heard this being an issue only in the context of SF5, which is a game already out. Some of y'all game dev savvy people can probable shed some light here, or maybe Angel-Corlux can ask if they're updating.

I'm not really following Unreal closely. Is there a date for the next Unreal release. How the Unreal release date fits into the development schedule, and what version of Unreal they're currently coding for would likely impact how feasible it would be to incorporate the latest version of Unreal. While typically incorporating minor version updates is intended to include specific corrections that will not have a negative impact on existing work it usually ends up best to retest existing work to ensure that nothing unusual goes wrong when moving between versions. If the Unreal release was announced recently the developers may need to discuss potential problems versus the benefit of using the newer version before coming to a decision to move to it.

As far as I've experienced, if you jump to a new engine version during development it sometimes goes smoothly without any issues but will often introduce bugs somewhere that won't always be spotted and may be hard to fix. It can be risky for sure but if there is a change that is significant enough, they might want to thoroughly test it with the new version on a separate branch and move to that if it goes smoothly. Errors and bugs are more likely to appear the larger the gap between the two version is so if they're currently using something that is as old as when the project first started, it doesn't look as promising... Can't really give you a more precise answer though since I don't know the specifics of their project, of the engine changes and of the version gap.

It'll depend on what's changed in the update. If game engines are similar to what I've experienced then certain features the developers access from within their own code might have the interfaces they're using (the functions / methods included in UE) be removed completely or altered. It depends if those functions are outdated or in a beta phase themselves. I'm sure there are other complications too.
The short answer is maybe things will go wrong. Maybe not.

yeah it literally comes down to what else was altered in the update and how it affects the game as it stands, if its almost entirely backend code streamlining but none of the interface commands are affected then its more likely to be a smooth transition, if it required heavy edits to the interface, well just look at the luminous engine and all the issues its caused for squeenix in the past

was a similar discussion on the subject back when the Switch version was announced. typically dev's don't update unreal past the version they start the project with, however in the case of bloodstained they are most likely forced to update because unreal won't support the Switch until version 4.15 (or somewhere around there) so there's a question of have they already updated (last I heard they haven't even started on the Switch port, so there's a good chance they haven't yet) or will they update soon. so if others are now saying these updates become easier to deal with the closer the version they are currently using is then it sounds to me like it wouldn't be too big of deal either way, hope we can get an official response though.

I would have thought they would have moved to the version that supports Switch development sooner rather than later once the Switch support was decided on so that any issues relating to that version can be picked up sooner rather than later in the development cycle. At the same time I could see it being put off for development of the demos shown at the recent trade shows though so that they're working with something they know will work and will not introduce issues in those demos.

I would've thought that the latest version of Unreal Engine 4 would be used in Bloodstained's [final] base game; especially if they want to get the Switch version out on time.

Hey everyone,
I do know what we're doing with Unreal and any relevant updates (or not) but I don't think it's my place to really talk about that, not because it's controversial, just simply because I could confirm or deny something that would then spawn a bunch of other questions I would have no idea how to answer...I'm not the dev after all I'll let the team know that it's something that people care about and leave it up to them to address in a KickStarter update or something similar if they like.
Appreciate everyone being so crazy passionate and involved though!

Just wanted to say, congratulations on PS4 T7 reducing its delay just a couple days ago by 3f. That's enormous and I'm jeal-...happy for those players. This is another Unreal 4 game. Dengojin
