Hello army of the night!
Bloodstained attended New York Comic Con 2017 this past weekend! It was a wild ride and we hope everyone that had a chance to come see us had fun playing the demo and/or meeting Igarashi-san and getting Mana's fabulous art print signed by him.
So without further ado, I thought everyone ( or at least some lol ) would enjoy a sort of "debriefing report" to kind of get an appreciation of what it was all like, take a peek at some cool pictures, and see just how much hard work goes into promoting the game and helping it become the best success possible.
Here are some facts-only summary points: - We were at Booth #622, located in a prime location, if not the best location, right in front of the main entrance to the show, next to the Funko booth, in front of Star Wars and on the other side of the Triforce booth.
- We had 16 game stations, that were constantly filled (omg so much ushering lol) for the duration of all four days, starting slightly before 10am until 7pm every day.
- We literally almost had 10,000 people play the Bloodstained demo. (nuts!)
- We gave out 800 of the beautiful art prints designed by Mana of ArtPlay with the back of the prints designed by myself (pictures below) throughout the 4 days during daily exclusive signing and photo sessions with Koji Igarashi and Mana as well. (Literally everyone wanted Mana to sign the print too, it was so crazy to see, but also so awesome, as she deserves the recognition!)
- The signings were CRAZY successful, the line wrapped all around our booth and the Triforce booth, and I personally had to cap the line every day at 11:00, just so we could avoid going more than 20 minutes over the limit.
- SO MANY interviews. Ehrmagherd lol. After signings and a super quick lunch every day (sry Iga and Mana!) the entirety of the rest of the day Iga would be giving interviews to press and media, with Mana doing an amazing job as always interpreting for him. A huge thank you to them both for sticking it out! Only on the last day did it slow down a bit and I was happy to send them into the wild to check out the show haha. And now some STORY time:- We unfortunately had a young man waiting in line have an epileptic / seizure episode, I had a colleague cover for me while I called 911 and administered first aid, told everyone to calm down and shortly thereafter the medics came, followed by the actual ambulance paramedics. He returned the next day with his friends, all of which were really grateful to our staff for the help and were happy to get their signed prints and play the game.
- You'll think I'm making this part up, but during one of the more calm moments of the show, I was just watching the players making sure everything was ok, standing in the corner of the booth, when I catch out of the corner of my eye a little kid staring at me (couldn't have been more than 10 or 12) and when he sees me looking at him, he slowly starts walking towards me, then finally as he got closer he started running past the booth and as he runs past us he yells "DON'T BE MIGHTY NO.9 LOL" (he actually said 'lol' out loud) and I was just left standing there with this incredulous "lol wat" face. It was pretty funny haha.
- During one of the time periods for signings with Iga and Mana, I had to (as every other day) cap the line. This one young lady came up to the end of the line at 11:40 (after it was already supposed to be over at 11:30) demanding to be let in line, because I had told her to try coming back in a little bit and I would see if I could squeeze her in. (this happened at 11:00 mind you) She finally demanded to "speak to my supervisor" which really caught me by surprise, and I tried to to maintain professionalism as much as I could as I told her "I'm sorry but I'm the supervisor"...it was definitely a surreal moment...I even offered to get her a signed copy later, it was just the line for in person signings I couldn't add more people to due to interviews that came right after...but no joy...oh well...
...At least she wasn't as bad as this other guy who came back like three times after the signings were done on the last day and would just stare at me angrily when I told him that we had concluded signings. On the third time I literally just excused myself and went to attend the booth elsewhere. Like, you staring at me isn't going to enable me to go back in time bro... PICTURES! Here are some pictures for everyone to get a peek at the event and our presence there.
NYCC! The mega-entrance is huge...could fit a plane in there...The signs! What do they mean!?!?! Well..these were to let people passing by know about the free prints and signings [/font] The line forms! This was before I used my big boy voice and asked everyone to BACK UP >:[ lol This fan definitely looked dapper for his meeting with a vampire slayer... Some fans had some 'BIZARRE'...requests for making poses with Iga and Mana... XD What the fans came for! Iga signed in gold and Mana in silver...so pretty! I may or may not have one of these framed on my desk now.... I do. This is a little something I designed to put on the back of the art prints. As you can see I taught Mana everything I know when it comes to artistic talent...like...uh...saturating the vector...recalibration...of the...uh... matrix. Yeah. We even set up the PS4 controllers we were using to have their own magicrystal curse! Oh boy...Gebel and the demons don't stand a chance now...the UNSC is on the job with Miriam... We even got Red and Blue player from Contra ready to join the fight! When I said we had diehard fans come for the signed print and the demo...I meant it... You would not BELIEVE how many people just ignored this sign or tried to force their way past me. It's ok though...let me tell you, being a 6'2 tall dude when I gave them the "death gaze while smiling" you see in anime...all of a sudden they remember how to read signs... As always, I made sure to treat Iga and Mana (and my guys) right! Took them for a celebratory dinner at a nice Italian restaurant not too far from the event. Amazing food and great prices because of the "fellow Italian" discount! And then finally, it was time to go home...lots of things to take apart, we were all running on fumes but we knew what had to be done! If you want to look a lot more pictures, along with a BUNCH of people posing with Iga, head on over to this gallery here. (May take a second, still loading)
And that's it everyone! I hope you enjoyed this little window into our presence at NYCC, and as always feel free to ask whatever questions you may have and if I can I'll reply to you! Thank you to everyone who came to visit us, thank you to Igarashi-san and Mana for being amazing throughout the event as they always are, and thank you very much to my colleagues from 505 Games, without them this event couldn't have been a success!

Waaaait a moment, are you Italian too? I must have missed that. So awesome to see a fellow Italian being such a cool guy so important for the game I'm anticipating the most haha.
Seems like you had a blast! The event looked gorgeous too.

Haha yes indeed, I was born in Italy and although I grew up in the US of A and have dual citizenship, my whole family is Italian and we speak/eat/hug Italian, as Italian as it gets!
So when I found the restaurant lots of "eeeehhiiiiii" ensued and friendliness, stories and good laughs. So they treated us super well both in terms of quality, price and overall atmosphere. They even gave us some free Tiramisu desserts (that you see there).
And yeah it was definitely a blast, lots and LOTS of work, but all of it well worth it. Only regret is that I couldn't really explore the show itself, but such is life haha.

Mmmmphphhprrrrgghph I told the Miriam page to exclude me from the print contest, but dammit I want that lol WELL, I imagine I'll get whatever copy I do eventually get signed by them after a while... So anyway, seeing this post and looking through the pictures, it brings to mind something interesting in me I thought I'd share. It really seems that even more than learning about/being excited for the game myself, I want to see and hear other people's reactions to it. Seeing a big crowd around it and several thousand trying it for the first time at a show is more meaningful to me than personally seeing a new thing. I read every article/comment on the game I can find to see what people are saying about it, not because I want to engage in those conversations or correct them about something, but because I care about the game to the point where it's become my own. Like if...you posted baby pictures of your new child on social media and somehow it goes viral, so you have to see and read what everybody has to say about them lol. (I don't have kids or even pets, but that's the only example I can think of right now haha) The reception and attention this gets is bigger than my personal enjoyment of what it is. Regardless of if I even like the game at this point (which of course I will, mind you), I would be happy that Bloodstained just got into enough old and new fans' hands who DID love it and want more. And beyond that, when I see IGA, Mana and now Angel out at these shows and these reports and interviews, I don't see it so much as like "man I wish I was there playing this/seeing x new thing", but rather...I want to see people be nice to them, be sure they have what they need, sleep well, have a good time - if I was there, I'd want to hang out and help any way I can rather than grill them on the game or jump into line for demo time. I'd want..."are you guys all right? Can I get you something?" time, lol It's more like...I'm seeing friends do something well instead of a game company showing off a new product. We're working together to build something. I think...this is the successful essence of a crowdfunded game done right, with the community behind it as it ideally should be, and...partly me being mushy about things lol. dammit

Sounds fun. Any news or screenshots of the game? What version was playable there? You should see news articles on various sites popping up this week, and the playable demo was the E3 2017 demo but with slightly optimized / updated graphics and lighting. Very m inor stuff though, because literally all of the work the dev team is doing is on what's ahead, not a demo from the past.
Motoko
Yeah it was definitely a crazy time, but lots of fun as well in its own way, and very effective for the game, branding etc., so time/money/blood and sweat well spent...and more than one or two funny / weird stories too so there's that lol
CastleDan
I think it's that sweet sexy sheen the paper gives haha
purifyweirdshard That's so sweet of you to feel that way, but don't worry even if you couldn't be there in person your kind words and spirit are with us always, just like all the other super passionate fans who want to see us succeed. :3

Loved the Dualshock4s with glowing purple light. I assume these demos ran on Windows PCs but by any chance were they running on PS4 hardware?

Did the demo displayed Playstation button prompts because of Dualshocks being used? Few games do that but I'd like to know because of I play this game on PC it will definitely be with a Dualshock 4 and not an Xbox controller.

That's an interesting point you raise, I'll bring it up to the team to make sure that you can select the button prompts you need, if it doesn't already just switch on its own.

Angel-Corlux Is this (https://i.imgur.com/m4D7clJ.jpg ) calamari? Anyways, looks like a lot of fun! Glad NYCC was such a success But anyways, yeah, I entirely agree with what purifyweirdshard said. I'm just a mod here rather than an official employee of 505 or Artplay or DICO, but even beyond my investment in the game, I've started to feel invested in its success on a personal level. I'm glad to hear 10k people played it, and I'm glad to hear it's doing well. It's as if I put a little of myself into the game, or more specifically the team, and to hear everyone's enthusiastic about IGA's game, and everyone loves Mana-mana's art, makes me feel as if I accomplished something too. Even if it's only as infinitesimal as giving IGA and Mana one less thing to worry about, or passing on how people feel about the art to them.

Thanks for the awesome report as always Angel-Corlux ! NYCC was definitely crazy but we had a great time. It was IGA's first time on the east coast, and we saw a lot of new faces. Not to mention, even though it was our first meeting, I recognized bloodstainedmiriam and miketendo once they started talking - like, a sudden realization that hits you after the first few seconds. I was also overwhelmed by everyone's reaction to the art piece. I almost gave up on art not too long ago so I'm really glad I took up the opportunity. We're glad that the man with the seizure was okay and we didn't even know about it until someone said it was already taken care of. There seemed to have been a lot of unexpected incidents throughout the weekend but they were all swiftly dealt with - we're in good hands people . 505 Games and TriForce staffs were really awesome and supportive throughout the weekend. And oh, the Italian food at the restaurant was amaaaazing! The tiramisu was just perfect. I also kept telling IGA that the best place to eat pizza in America is in NY (sorry I am biased...). He kind of just looked at me and said, "Why is everybody I meet from the US obsessed with pizza??" Well, I don't know... pizzaislife.Buuuut we had pizza delivered to the convention center, and he understood why I said it's the best. Success. Here's a quick story of what happened outside of NYCC if anyone is interested... Since we had free time to explore New York on the 4th, I decided to take IGA around the city since this is where I grew up (I used to attend SVA and Art Students League of NY). The first place I thought of was visiting the St. Patrick's Cathedral. It's an amazing Neo-Gothic-style cathedral placed between two modern skyscrapers. Around the same time, my sister contacted me if we could hang out while I'm in the city so I decided, "Hey why not meet up at the cathedral?" IGA and I usually take an Uber or lyft to get to places, but I decided he should experience NY subway for the first time (sounds like a terrible idea for locals reading this haha). It was pretty interesting and IGA seemed really excited when we were buying the metro cards. We then walked a few blocks to see this: We met up with my sister who looks like me with pink hair. It was really easy to spot her so we all went inside and looked around. Both my sister and I never went inside even though we pass by it so many times. IGA would take a lot of pictures talk about how it'll come really useful for development (this man thinks about his work 24/7 haha). After looking around the cathedral, we decided to head for lunch. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures from here as I had to conserve my phone battery life. On our way to lunch, we decided to stop by Nintendo World (I think it's called Nintendo New York now) which is actually a 5-minute walk from the cathedral. We don't have a Nintendo store like this here in Japan so why not right? I loosely explained and showed the Rockefeller Center and then we went inside the store. First thing IGA notices is the shirts that have 任天堂 on them and he got a kick out of it (In Japan, they rarely use the kanji version of the company name). Now that we think about it, we should have gotten those shirts for souvenirs... We also saw stacks of the Switch consoles on the shelves and both our evil minds thought, "How much can we sell these for if we brought some back to Japan?" My sister looked puzzled since they never had a shortage there and both IGA and I went to raffles trying to get a chance to buy it. After our little adventure at the store, we also walked into the Grand Central Terminal which might be interesting to see while we're nearby it. After seeing around the terminal, we decided to eat at a place that has 20-something vendors selling all sorts of food and drinks in one area - lobster rolls, pizza, ramen, juice bar, etc. We just chatted about what we do at work and what it's like living in New York (my sister) and Tokyo (me, IGA). We still had some time to kill so my sister took us to this cafe/bar which is a Japanese coffeehouse by day and a sake bar by night. She's a regular there and it was interesting for IGA and me to see this close-knit Japanese community which has a very different vibe from the kind in Japan. What I also didn't know is that my sister is still an avid gamer and she talked about how much she played Harmony of Dissonance. At one point in our lifetime, we were both too busy trying to be adults (lol) and didn't talk about video games in general. Now I know she plays Nier Automata and Overwatch. When we were about to leave, my sister gave us chocolate whiskeys from Brooklyn to take back with us. I need to treat her when she visits Tokyo next time. On one of the weekend nights, we also ate dinner with the Fangamer staffs who were at NYCC. Adil (who also visited our office in Tokyo!) took us to a Pakistani restaurant that served awesome butter chicken. We had a great time and talked about some geeky stuff in general. We also know you guys had a booth there so thank you for taking your precious business time playing the demo at our booth! So I heard Adil's cooking is superb Dangamer , Fangamer Steve , and Reid Young - we need to visit someday! *coughs* For uh... business reason of course...

Mana, if you ever see Adil again, tell him Gunlord says hi I think I know the Adil you're talking about, he's one of my old, old, very old friends from waaaay back.
