I read at one point that Sony and Nintendo were previously going to work together on a console..could this be what it was? @_@
Also, after their fallout, the PSX was born and the rest is history. Very interesting indeed..

They were working on a project together but Nintendo got cold feet and pulled out of the deal, shortly after the PS1 was born. This thing was what they were designing before then.
here is the video:

From my understanding the deal fell through because Sony wanted to be the exclusive producer of the hardware while Nintendo would have been relegated to just being a developer of exclusive software. Nintendo insisted on having a stake in the hardware and the deal fell through. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNES-CD

Normally i wouldnt do this... But I have suspicions as to the legitimacy. Why is the top half and the controller port brand new looking and the rest have that aged yellow plastic discoloration?

Very cool find, though as ghaleon says, it may be a forgery. If it's genuine, though, it's certainly an artifact of historical interest

gonintendo.com/stories/237730-a-look-at-how-that-snes-playstation-prototype-resurfacedThis info comes from a Polygon interview with Dan Diebold, the man who found the SNES Playstation prototype... - Terry Diebold, Dan's father, worked as a maintenance man at a company called Advanta Corporation from 2000 to 2009 - Olaf Olafsson was president of Advanta - Olafsson is also the former CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment - in 2009, Advanta filed for bankruptcy - the company ordered Diebold to clean out office rooms and throw stuff away - in one room was a box with the SNES Playstation prototype The system had a game cart and CD with it, but it's missing a power cord. Terry is planning on getting a cord and firing up the prototype to see if it works.

It apparently has a cart and some type of prototype disc they were working on so there was bound to be something on them.

as to the discoloration, i see that all the time in machines with plastic casings, one casing part will discolor and others wont (different impurities in another part of the factory, different impurities or even different formula for the plastic used, sun/heat exposure difference, smoking, etc) so the controller and port faceplate was probably made of one batch of plastic and the rest of the case was made from another batch
