Background objects tend to look either too shiny, or too dull. Tweaking or changing shaders could have a big impact on this. I remember Miriam looking pretty dull until Shader 3 brought her to life. It probably wouldn't take much to change. Example 1. The skulls, cage, pillars, wall, and floor are highly reflective. It makes them look wet or highly polished. The backgrounds would look better if the shininess was reduced. Example 2. Note the shiny bell in the background. Article with more images.

I'm going to quote What Mana, community manager, IGA's official translator and member of Artplay, said recently regarding game's aestethics (I removed some parts of her message to let only what you talked about: (...) IGA has a specific vision for the aesthetic appearance of the game which he mentions in a couple of interviews - Create a 2D visual appearance using 3D models, but he's not referring to toon-shader or painterly look. He's trying to recreate old-school platformers that use light foreground vs dark background. This is quite adventurous as I've never seen a visually successful 3D side-scroller with light foreground and dark background. Dond't know if this helps much, but it is what she said.

If you compare old with new images, you get more view how the environments can look after being processed a bit more. When it comes to the feel for the environment, it would be nice to talk about them if we get an early access and information where the areas are actually finished, (if they ever will be finished during early access.) maybe we know after early access how things will look.

Another one. The steel and bell are very shiny. Isn't this supposed to be old and abandoned? Who's polishing all this? Then the stone on the pathways looks rather smooth and dull. Enkeria: They have in fact made background improvements. I wish for them to continue this trend. I'm not calling for massive changes, like new textures, or anything, but rather tweaks. Small changes to settings, or shader tweaks. I noticed that Miriam herself didn't "come alive" until given her current shader setup.
