It can be successful too if it's a 3D game, but it also depends how the game is designed, specially the gameplay. The environments, casts, musics won't alter the gameplay. So their style can remain.

I've played both Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness and love them both immensely! I absolutely love the idea of a 3-D platformer! I actually spent hours just wondering around the environment in LoI and CoD just admiring the surroundings and details.

LoI and CoD were kind of boring for me. I loved the mood, boss fights were incredible! But exploring these long levels was boring. Castlevania 64 was a good one - there were more traps than enemies in it and I loved it. Lords of Shadow was epic and long - it had both good moments and tonnes of monotony in between. What are the chances to play 100% pleasing 3D Castlevania game? Looking back at the past experiences I would say they are low. But yes - I would still play it.

I still would have been excited, and I still would have backed it.
