I've only got the opportunity to watch the first 15 minutes or so, but I love what I saw.
It doesn't fit the cannon of my RPG game, but that's OK. I'm glad I wrote my story before the show came out or I would have been trying to fit it in with the show. My brain just wouldn't have been able to reach the same places with stuff that's different.
It actually makes me appreciate my story more while at the same time there is this awesome show that fills in some of the same stuff I wanted to.
Very cool.

It was way too short. I had faith in this project and god I wasn't dissapointed. Loved Trevor simple personality, also I loved that little Dracula backstory, makes it feel like his vengance against humanity is somewhat justified. Episode 4 was simply a treat for everybody who has played SoTN. Trevor vs Alucard is gonna go down as a top 10 anime fights for real.

this was fantastic! igarashi would be so proud! i mean: this isn't just proof that video adaptations can be great. this is proof that western anime can very well be a thing! i love the way the first four episodes expand upon what was only hinted at in manuals (the catholic church's treatment of the belmonts and belnades), and flashbacks (lisa's death.) i love how trevor is portrayed. a down-on-his-luck man openly hated upon by paranoid townsfolk. i love how he has to be reminded of who he is and what his destiny is. this series also shows that the catholic church are run by people just as bad as dracula.
also. one other thing i love is how alucard is rocking his sotn appearence and sword, his design from castlevania 3 was ok, but far too much like the dracula stereotype.
i am curious however, how will grant play into all this? and how far are they going to go? will they go with the other belmonts? cross your fingers fellow igavania fans!

I really wish I had Netflix, the fact its so good delights me. Though a friend did just share the clip of when Dracula unleashes his monsters on a town, and i just have this question:
ON WHAT PLANET AM I THAT CASTLEVANIA IS MORE VIOLENT AND SCARY THAN BERSERK!?
Seriously the amount of gore and horror on display stunned me.

I've been working non-stop since the 27th of June. Being able to sit down and binge watch is a huge treat. One that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Watching Cronqvist and Lisa flirt with each other... Nicely done Adi and Warren.
Season 2 can't come soon enough.

I really liked what i watched. It's great. Trevor has such a great personality. He is so bitter, sarcastic and hateful towards everything due to what happened to his family. He has the sword that most Belmonts had and never used, and he uses it. His skills with the whip are legendary, the sub-weapon knives and even the holy water (in a really creative way). Sypha and the orator's order was unexpected. Castlevania lore never went too deep around her backstory, so, they had plenty to create and it was great. Fire and Ice attacks, just like the game. Alucard made me speechless. Such a great character. When he and Trevor was fightning, as soon as he called his trusty Alucard sword and Trevor was holding a sword too, i thought "okay, sword VS sword? No way you are going to win Alucard and his sword skills!". Not only that, but he actually TELEPORTED and attacked from the back, using Alucard's Sword skill! Abd then Trevor kicks him in the nuts. And he is like "C'mon, it's not a bar fight, have a little class." Overall i really enjoyed it. The fact that Sypha's group can see the future, may give us hints and flash-fowards about future events. I just want to know when (and if) Grant will show up. And HOW CAN i forget about the great talk at the INN about the Goat rapist? We need a spin-off of Goat's owner and his trusty Goat Rapist Blinder Shovel, that can be upgraded later to be Goat Rapist Killer Shovel.

this is proof that western anime can very well be a thing! This was already demonstrated in the past with Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. Exceptional series (in general) on any level. I think I'll watch the Castlevania episodes tonight, after work.

All right, so time for me to go in deeper on this and give more of my full thoughts on it. It's amazing. Some things were changed to really push the BAD CHURCH narrative, though, and the main one of which is what I built my character around for Mike's D&D game lol...
Sypha already had an established backstory they decided to change. She was an orphaned witch that escaped a series of witch trials brought about by Carmilla twisting the hearts of men. She was picked up at a monastery and raised there, but still practiced and mastered magic in secret. She became a hunter for the church who were the first party to go out to try to fight Dracula before they became more desperate and called on Trevor. She "made a deal with spirits" for her powers to grow. No family is mentioned canonically except that her parents died in the trials. She disguised herself as a man to move around safely since recently Lisa was burned at the stake as well.
So, all of the "Speaker" stuff is new, grandfather, etc, they more or less needed a competent faction for good and didn't want it to be decent Christians. That's the most disappointing thing for me. The narrative they were driving though is the corruption of the church was more of an antagonist than the black/white good vs. evil we're used to as represented in the game stories, and that's fine, but I've definitely seen a whole lot of it these days. The Church back then was definitely corrupt, but there definitely was not JUST corruption. Side note to that though, I was glad to see the scene with the demons vs the bishop where it was cleanly confirmed that God abandoned them for their corruption. How's that for Ananais/Sapphira, Mike? lol. A much more extreme example, for sure.
There is also the one priest in Gresit who was able to consecrate holy water, so that's I guess at least 1 true believer out of the thousands corrupt and misled represented otherwise, and the power of God is evident from the effectiveness of the tool. It didn't burst into flame, but it sizzled, so perhaps its effectiveness is tied to the situation and person?
Okay, so that's mostly what I'm critical about. What I loved though:
THE LINES. The writing was amazing. Trevor paraphrases a line that Alucard will use later in Symphony, "the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing". Lisa's last words are very close to what they're said to be in SotN. There's otherwise some great banter, moments of humor and drama. My man "fell down a hole".
SUBTLE REFERENCES. Yes, Alucard essentially uses the Alucard Sword's special attack during the fight with Trevor. Also awesome to me that maybe no one has picked up on yet lol, before Trevor's adventure really starts in CV3, he loses his cape. Similarly, when he becomes serious and dedicates himself to saving people, he lets go of his tattered cape in the series as well. Now, in CV3 he was also praying before a cross in that scene I'm talking about, but this isn't a praying Trevor obviously. See above (BAD CHURCH).
Potential FUTURE subtle references. They're in a machine tower of gears right now, aren't they? What do you find at the top of a tower of gears? Grant. There you Grant fans go, but he's probably some kind of monster at first. Maybe a Danesti of some generation that was trapped and transformed.
I do get the feeling that this season sets up later SotN events. I don't think I want to see a bitter, sarcastic drunkard in Richter, though. If you want to throw some gray on that guy, wait for the Shaft possession. For the Rondo parts and after, guy should be straight.
One last thought - the scale of Dracula's power in this is HUGE, more than I think had been represented before. He looks very, very powerful. The city-sized rain of demons, blood and hellfire - the huge tornado-sized maelstrom of ravens he can make himself into...I mean, the CV3 cast have their work cut out for them. Trevor needs to farm for some hearts, get some triple shot, learn how to item crash and blade rush...hahaha. They're in luck that Alucard can do a lot more than shoot crappy fireballs and fly around.
whew. Go see it, man, I can hardly believe it's real it's so good.

Definitely a great, Gothic horror series that captures the personality of the franchise. The Trevor-Alucard duel is like something out of Ninja Scroll or Vampire Hunter D. The only real problem is this is obviously written as a pilot and thus is a prologue rather than a proper story. What I hope is they go full Yoshiaki Kawajiri with the second season having the heroes go up against freaky creatures like Medusa, the Water Dragons, the Mummies, and the Creature. If they keep up this level of quality they're sure to have a classic on their hands, and possibly to really carve out a niche of serious, adult animation that isn't just comedy.

I just couldn't believe there were only 4 episodes. That has to be the shortest season of television I have ever watched. Super disappointed that there isn't more. I need more seasons NOW.
Now that I've vented a little....
I loved everything about Season 1 of Castlevania on Netflix. I have literally zero problems with the show. I only wish there were more. So, Season 2 won't be out until 2018? The wait will crush my spirit.....

Alright. Here are my thoughts on the series. I have submitted this to Operation Akumajo as requested by the other admins there. Not sure how much we will edit, but this is my rough unedited version. ***SPOILERS! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK*** The Castlevania Netflix series was short, but oh so sweet. Hopefully by now you have had an opportunity to have watched it. Of course, an editorial from Operation Akumajo is expected so here are some thoughts on the content of the show.
Castlevania lore can be precious to a die hard fan. This series takes liberties on the official game cannon. Fortunately the series also uses the cannon and makes it something new while still upholding the legacy of Castlevania. Let’s talk about some of those liberties.
The Belmonts were feared for their superhuman powers and driven out by the people. The church called upon them for help as a last resort. In the Netflix series the church’s role is very dark. Not only have they exiled the Belmonts and don’t ask Trevor for help, but they set into motion Dracula’s vengeance as they were directly responsible in burning Lisa at the stake. How Lisa and Dracula’s romance started and worked has always been a fascinating yet undefined aspect of the game cannon. The show uses the little bit of established information about Lisa and expands upon it, having her seek medical knowledge from Dracula. There is no mention of her likeness to Elisabetha, and after her death Dracula exclaims she's the only woman he ever truly loved. The show may just ignore Lament of Innocence. When Trevor’s whip makes a demon explode, he simply says it’s blessed to fight against demons and vampires. As far as we know, the show may not be concerned with the passing of the whip and it’s origin.
Dracula mentions the castle is basically a traveling machine. The origin of the castle is still mysterious in both the game cannon and the show. Dracula seems to be a dark mythical force that no one has ever seen, but impales people and can somehow be found by Lisa. I enjoy that the details on how all of that works isn’t really explained. The historical Vlad Tepes, the novel Dracula and Castlevania’s Dracula all seem to overlap, but when it comes to tying it all together it’s best left to ponder in our own headcanons. Sypha is a “speaker”, and this aspect is completely new. How Trevor and Sypha end up in the castle and start the fight with Alucard works for the shot time we had with the story. Think of these four short episodes as a pilot, and they covered quite a bit of ground in the little time they were given.
Although the art hints at Ayami Kojima influences from Dracula’s eyebrows and Alucard’s general appearance, the show has it’s own style which animates well. The things done on screen work well as animation, and I can’t imagine any live action show coming off as good. The visual style of Castlevania is just as important as it’s music. We didn’t get remixes of music from the games in any battle sequence, the short intro or the outro. We did get a few chanting moments though.
The monsters of Dracula’s “horde” all seem to be mostly the same demon with the exception of the talking one with the glowing blue teeth. I was expecting more iconic monsters from the game series. At least we got the Cyclops, and the demons we saw were great.
There is no Grant. Adi Shankar says this is a game adaptation that finally works as a show because it’s not done by cash grabbing Hollywood executives, but actual fans who care about the games. I have no doubt this is true about Shankar himself. This was written by Warren Ellis, and I think at this point we can all agree that we have a good story. However, was Ellis really a fan? Rumor says otherwise. His decision to leave out Grant is easily the most controversial decision made.
So those are some of the liberties that stuck out to me. Let’s talk a little on how they really nailed some great things that we can see are taken from the game. Trevor fights a Cyclops and frees Sypha from being a statue, then comments on how she looked like a boy. I’ve never used the word fangasm before, and I’ll be damned if I start now, but that moment was perfect. She explained that it’s safer to travel if she's dressed like a man. They work it in so well and move on, but that moment is truly for die hard fans and it’s more than appreciated. It’s things like that which make it so fun to watch. In Dracula’s Curse when Trevor fought Alucard, it was an easy fight that ends in an alliance and the introduction to a character that would be loved by so many Castlevania fans. Seeing that fight played out on screen was so exciting. Just like the game where you can tell this fight is just a test and not meant to end your progress, the show uses that to forge the alliance of the three protagonists. It was done right. The sword vs. whip battle was played out, and it was a tie in the end, of course. I really think they catered very well to the fans in this battle. When Lisa entered the castle, it looked immense on the inside, just like the games. We got to see the alchemy laboratory, and surely this was done in hopes to please us. The into shows Alucard shift from wolf to human form, as well as him kneeling in front of Lisa’s burned body. There are a lot of little things that add up to show us that this really is Castlevania in the important ways.
There are plenty of aspects that are new. The show gives us new things to enjoy along side our love for what we are already familiar with. Some of these things will resonate with people, and some will not. Personally, I think Trevor spitting on the pile of dead people was a little much. His attitude of an unwilling hero allows for character growth, which is already made by the end of the short season. The dynamic between the three characters seems like they have enough room to really explore and play with so that they may create an ongoing narrative that will remain entertaining. Even without Grant… The Belmont crest is something I hope to see on merchandise. Physical copies of the series with commentary would also be nice. At the very least, I hope to see fans creating amazing things due to this series. It’s sure to attract fresh blood to the fandom. Sure, Castlevania has it’s roots in campy Universal horror monsters such as The Creature, Wolfman, the Mummy, and so on, but we can’t expect new audiences to be attracted to those things in the way Castlevania needs today. I like the more adult oriented nature of the show because old school fans are adults now. Pitchforks through the necks, intestines strewn about like decorations, demon fetuses raining down from the sky, and all the other gore was entertaining to me personally. Castlevania is about gothic horror, and this stuff fits. I honestly expected nudity for the R rating, but it used all it’s R rating on gore and language.
Well, I have an overall extremely positive opinion over the series. Sure, things could have been different, but this is what they have decided to do. It's a hell of a lot better of a reboot than Lords of Shadow.

Finished watching full episodes in one sit through. Trevor vs. Alucard brings back so much memories, especially when he teleports and leaves a red trace behind. I'm literally like "I used that move in the game" and weep my happy tears I also love Trevor's character, that speech in E03 makes blood burn. The only shortcoming is... it's too short! It's more like a prelude lol, need more! AlphaOmegaSin's review:
