PREQUEL MINI-GAME FOR CONSOLES: Inti Creates is so excited about Bloodstained that they're hoping to create a 2D, pixel-based, retro-styled mini-game that sheds some light on the world of Bloodstained before Miriam awoke from her coma. This is a complete game which will be sold separately, but every $28+ backer copy of Bloodstained will come with a FREE download of this game on PS4, XB1, Wii U, or PC! (Backers at Physical+Digital tiers will be eligible for 2 copies of the mini-game.)
As of now, that is all the information that we have about the Prequel Mini-Game. It is most probably that the Wii U version was cancelled together with the main game in favor of the Switch. We barely discussed the Prequel Mini-Game, specially because the main game is what everyone wants. But it was a stretch goal, that the project reached and so, the dev team also has this to create. So, considering that, i wanted to discuss a bit about the Prequel Mini-Game and ask some questions: 1) WHAT GRAPHICS STYLE WOULD YOU LIKE FOR THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
Considering that they said "pixel-based, retro-styled", that, nowadays, can mean a bunch of things. 8 bits (like NES Castlevanias), 16 bits (like Super Castlevania 4), or even 32 bits (like Symphony of the Night), or maybe another option. 2) WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU EXPECT OR WANT FOR THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
The music doesn't need to match the graphics style. The retro-scene is full of examples like that. The prequel mini-game could have 8 bits music (NES chiptune classic), something more 16 bits (SNES style music) or even nowadays quality. 3) WHO COULD BE THE MAIN CHARACTER OF THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
After the Magi-Curse, Miriam fell into a coma for 10 years. During that time, Gebel massacred the Alchemist Guild and probably summoned the Castle from hell itself. Who would be the character of the prequel-mini game during that time? Just as a age reference, Zangetsu is 42 years old, Dominique is 25, Alfred is 57 and Anne 12. Johannes is 30, Gebel is also 30 and Miriam is 18. 4) WHO OR WHAT WOULD BE THE MAIN VILLAN OF THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
That is tricky but it is something interesting to think about, considering who could be the main character. Zangetsu lost a partner to a powerful demon, that was summoned by Alfred and that, it seems, make him start to hunt demons more actively. Dominique is a exorcist from the church, while Johannes is the last member of Gebel's purge. Anne survived a demon attack at her village...Almost all characters could fit at the prequel mini-game, considering where the game could take place and all of them have their own enemies to fight against. 5) WHAT GAMEPLAY STYLE DO YOU EXPECT OR WOULD YOU LIKE FOR THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
Retro-styled, considering we are at 2017, again, can mean many things. The game could have a stage-based gameplay, like the old Castlevanias (the same style Classic Mode will have), it could be a bit more Igavania style like Castlevania 2 or even more "recent titles" like the 20 years old Symphony of the Night (yeah folks, SOTN is already retro), although that would require more resources. 6) WHAT IS THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME'S LENGTH DO YOU WANT OR EXPECT AND WHERE IT WILL TAKE PLACE?
The Prequel will be sold separately, so, it is most probably that it will not be a very short game. On the other hand, the dev team already have their hands full. Expecting a very large prequel-game would require more time and resources. Do you expect something like the old games of 8 and 16 bits in size (10~15 stages) or a very large game, like Symphony of the Night and the GBA titles? Also, where the game will take place? Gebel's castle? The ruins of the Alchemist guild or somewhere else? If people think this discussion is too redundant, i can remove this thread on request. I just think we barely discussed this in the past. I searched for it around at the forums, and we barely talked about this. Check out my other discussion: Discussion about the Roguelike Dungeon HERE That's all folks!

I think it would be interesting if the prequel would be Gebel's quest to kill all the Alchemists.

Some other things we know, and some things I assume about the prequel mini-game: Mana mentions in a past BCB that there is an NDA with an unnamed company for the game, which hints that work is/was being done on it. There was nothing else to say/announce at that time, of course, but that bit was interesting to me. Next, IntiCreates has been doing a few games like this lately, it so happens. Blaster Master Zero was ready with the launch of the Switch, and Mighty Gunvolt Burst yesterday: www.destructoid.com/review-mighty-gunvolt-burst-442503.phtmlFrom these two examples, it's not hard to picture a similar re-imagining of a 'vania style game. I imagine the graphics will be something like the HD stylized 8/16-bit look we've seen from those games, Shovel Knight, etc. For forum opinion on that though, our old poll favored the 32-bit look (SotN, DS, etc): bloodstainedfanforums.com/thread/360/poll-style-prequel-mini-game Something else to add to the "what we know" category is that from a Kickstarter update (I believe? Maybe an interview?) about it, it was written there that the game would be 8-bit-ish (as could be inferred from the Famicom controller), but what they were aiming for could be described as closer to 16. Sounds like the other things Inti has done, sure enough. I think something modern could be produced that uses elements and advantages of a few different styles. Inti certainly has a handle on it by now, I think. Interesting though that there may be another outside company involved, and after all Inti's retro offerings have almost all been more jump n' shoot Mega Man than per se classicvania.

I think something along the lines of Castlevania III in scope and play which was one of my favorite NES games would be all kinds of awesome. I'm kind of hoping for remixes of the bloodstained soundtrack as 8-bit / Chiptune music for it.

I imagine this is something Inti Creates will be more natural with it makes sense if IGA would have them work on it. It seems to me like DICO and 505 are gonna be in the main meat of development for Bloodstained. I actually wonder how long it would take for the mini game itself to finish with a regular team if Bloodstained wasn't accounted for.

32 bits (like Symphony of the Night) 2) WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU EXPECT OR WANT FOR THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
8 bits music (NES chiptune classic) 3) WHO COULD BE THE MAIN CHARACTER OF THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
Zangetsu - Slaying demons elsewhere, and finding out there is a similar event close by, so it ends by him traveling there. 4) WHO OR WHAT WOULD BE THE MAIN VILLAN OF THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
3 mini-bosses that would become lesser demons in the main game, and with more pixels ofc. No main evil thing. 5) WHAT GAMEPLAY STYLE DO YOU EXPECT OR WOULD YOU LIKE FOR THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
Symphony of the Night 6) WHAT IS THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME'S LENGTH DO YOU WANT OR EXPECT AND WHERE IT WILL TAKE PLACE?
The environment would be in a forest at sunset, a village at night and in a mountain with some crystals that lights the way. One level with about 20 "rooms" with these 3 locations blending into eachother nicely. Checkpoints with lanterns to keep track of time, adding time as score. Sword as weapon, 3 types of attacks (one of which is a jumping dash strike towards the ground in a nice angle). So 15 minutes or 1 hours? Everything above 1 hour would be epic, but nothing I can expect from a "bonus game" attached to the main game. Thanks for this post.

Knowing that Inti-creates is involved, I think it's safe to assume that it will be "pseudo- 8-bit" ala Mighty Gunvolt and its sequel. I would love for them to go above and beyond and create something 16-bit(preferably) or even 32-bit(I'd be surprised if they could), but it's unlikely. Even if it comes out after the game drops, it'll be cheaper and easier to make an 8-bit game.
Playing as Alfred, Miriam, or Zangetsu would be interesting for me. Johannes could work too.

It will be Atari styled graphics with chiptune versions of eurobeat songs. You'll play as Anne and will be up against Igarashi himself in a twinstick shooter that takes place in the inner mind of a Konami executive tackling the guilt and crippling depression brought about by their actions. It'll have 15 years worth of playtime due to ingenious design opening it up for immense replay value.

1) 16 or 32 bit, prefer 32 bit, but if 16 bit saves resources to be used on the main game I'm all for it. 2) higher the quality music the better, they could even reuse some of bloodstains music. 3) Miriam's in a coma, Anne is 2, Gebel and Johannes just don't sound interesting enough for a full story, Zangestsu and Dominique are characters I want to be playable in the main game (prequel needs to stand out a bit from the main game) which just leaves either Alfred, or I would find it fun to play through the story of the powerful demon that killed off Zangestsu's lost friend. 4) no idea's about a villian. 5) I expect it to be similar to the main game, but have a bit of a different feel to it such as you get from using a different character. 6) location would depend on what story they want to tell, I'm not picky on where it takes place. Length with it being advertised as a mini-game I only expect about an hour, but I don't think that would sell well on its own if they really want to make this a separate game, so if they want other people to buy it as a stand alone probably need at least 5 hours. overall I wouldn't put much pressure on the mini game as its the main game that I really care about.

1) WHAT GRAPHICS STYLE WOULD YOU LIKE FOR THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
32 would be above and beyond outstanding of course, but I expect and would be fine with what Inti Creates has been doing already.
2) WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU EXPECT OR WANT FOR THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
Not per se "8 bit" chiptune, but something more along the lines of the 90s 'vania style heard in the 16 bit era. Or instead, maybe something representative of each previous era - Famicom VRC6, YM2612 sound for the Genesis/Bloodlines feel, PCE CD quality synth audio from Rondo. I mean yeah, the 8-bit era was great, but there's a lot more out there, especially from this series that was great. Too many folks get caught up in this idea of everything needing to be "retro 8-bit".
3) WHO COULD BE THE MAIN CHARACTER OF THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
Depends on the story they want to tell. It could be Miriam and company saving Anne from her village, Zangetsu versus the demon or even Dominique/Johannes leading up to the events directly preceding waking Miriam. It "could" be anyone, and actually I'd like to see it one of the non-Miriam characters myself, or at least a combination/option to switch (i.e. CV3 or Inti's other throwback titles).
4) WHO OR WHAT WOULD BE THE MAIN VILLAN OF THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
Kind of like Enkeria said, I would love for there to be enemies or story elements presented in the prequel that come up later in the main game - perhaps even hints or cryptic story pieces that could clue you in to the plot's development and who upcoming villains/bosses are. Since I expect this game to be a bit more of a classic callback, I wouldn't be surprised to see more of a classicvania inspired, non-Goetia set of bosses/villain. Something like werewolf/minotaur, giant bat, skeleton knight, etc...
5) WHAT GAMEPLAY STYLE DO YOU EXPECT OR WOULD YOU LIKE FOR THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME?
CV3 or Rondo. I don't expect any sort of equipment system. Probably/hopefully power-ups and movesets that allow for some good variety. All characters playable good at their own things, but none of them per se required to beat any one part (or in Maria's case, just better at everything lol).
6) WHAT IS THE PREQUEL MINI-GAME'S LENGTH DO YOU WANT OR EXPECT AND WHERE IT WILL TAKE PLACE?
5 hours sounds like a lot to expect, if you ask me. That's longer than pretty much any classicvania, so I'd say something more like 2-3 or so. Something you can beat/play through in one sitting like the 80s/90s games, but with enough extra stuff to stretch it out to 4/5 if you find all of the secrets, collect everything, take all of the possible paths, etc.

Things I wish to see in the Prequel Game
Playable Characters We start off with Zangetsu, the original story is about him. He has an intro in a way that we see text on screen. He starts off and fight off monsters. When he then later on finish, he is at a crossroad between the Prequel and the original Bloodstained game.
Inti Creates could make more playable heroes, each with different weapons and minor skill-set, the subweapons of these are the interesting part however.
Subweapons The prequel could have 1 special move-set for "each" playable character, this special move would also change how the subweapons are used when we have enough ot ether. So if a subweapon (like a shuriken throw) are using X ether, the character we are playing use Y ether with another button, ending up with a different moveset.
Ever played Super Mario Maker? When you change the game, the tiles are changed too. If there was a way to change a few tiles and the lore behind each character, it would be cool. During the first Castlevania we see a cross, a statue like that could be a thing to be changed only during our adventures, make that statue to appear in different locations during that game. Or, change the shopkeeper, the colors of the sky or something else.
There could be 4 types of subweapons. 1 melee. 1 mid-range. 1 range and 1 area of effect. The ranged and mid-ranged ones are going either straight or with an arc of some kind and are changed in type of thrust (speed), energy (power), arc or amount if used with our special move-set button.
Example: Zangetsu Melee: Knuckle-Punch. Special: Uppercut Mid-Range: Katana Slice. Special: 2x Katana Slices Range: Axe Arc Throw. Special: Higher Axe Arc Throw AoE: Rootes Enemies. Special: Wider Rooted effect on Enemies
Example: Shovel Knight Melee: Bash. Special: Longer ranged Bash Mid-Range: Jump + Falling Shovel. Special: Jump + Falling Fire Shovel Range: Summon Dragonbird. Special: Fireballs from the sky by Dragonbird AoE: Surrounded Armor Shield. Special: Longer Surrounded Armor Shield
Example of other characters: Dominique Baldwin, Shantae, Gunvolt characters and more. These could be part of either DLC or in an options menu right at the start, or activated by secret code.
etc.
Song Section Epic Retro Music Library. Listen to the music of our choice, manage playlist for the actual game.
Mini-Boss Only mini-boss, a pixel-version of a lesser demon in the original Bloodstained. Perhaps a more simple version of the one IGA drew during the kickstarter countdown?
Familiar Add Goofball in this game. He could act as an extra attack, find hidden treasures and more, but he have to be at a secret and hidden place himself. He could also be some kind of shopkeeper, as long as he stays friendly.
Pixel Portraits If you could include IGA himself but as a pixel-version somewhere, it would be cool. Perhaps even a nod towards Castlevania somehow.
The Castlevania Feel The overall feel should be like older Castlevania, even though the game will be different it could pay respect to the homeage of the series. If there is a wall-meat in the game somewhere, let it be known as a spoiled wall-meat and will not be eaten by our character. A better idea would be Mac N Cheese.
More Modes? If possible, make the prequel have different modes. Both a harder mode in general but also a speed run mode and perhaps even a rouge mode. Better yet, let the player toggle around in a menu - change density of enemies, health of your character and enemies, set time on/off, choose which subweapons that will appear in the game, moon jump and other similar features.
Cross Promotion People that own both Bloodstained AND the prequel should both have some kind of bonus.
Examples Bloodstained: Unlock Retro remixes, listen to them while playing the game (replace the soundtrack if you want). Prequel: Unlock the original music, listen to them while playing the prequel (replace the soundtrack if you want).
Bloodstained: Unlock a pixel-weapon. Prequel: Unlock a special subweapon?
Bloodstained: Change one of the IGA portraits in the castle to a pixel-image of our hero in the prequel. Prequel: Change one of the portraits (?) to normal high-rez IGA.
Bloodstained: Costume for Miriam Prequel: Unlock day/night cycle with dreadful text at the bottom (with no annoying pause) "WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT TO HAVE A CURSE"
