Anne Knolles (アン・ノールズ) Age: 12
A village girl whose parents were murdered. Anne was saved by Dominique and Miriam when demons attacked her village. When Dominique is out of town, Anne looks after the shop. She is a bright and cheerful girl.
The UPDATE 51 bring us three new characters. Alfred, Anne and Dominique. Of all three, Anne, at first, seems to be the least important one. A girl whose parents were murdered, saved by Dominique and Miriam and that takes care of the shop while Dominique is out of town. She may have a small role in the game, or maybe she is way more important than we think. And, of course, she could potentially be a playable character, although that is way less possible to happen, considering what we know as of now. Like the other new character's thread, this one is to discuss Anne. But, specially, Anne's ROLE in the game. 1) ANNE AS A PLAYABLE CHARACTER
Anne is 12 years old and it seems she isn't much more than a simple plain villager girl. But she may have more than it meets the eye. She was 2 years old when the Ritual happened, 10 years ago, so, it is almost certain she didn't participate on it. But Anne surviving the demon slaying on the village may have some higher significance, besides she being saved by Dominique and Miriam. Maybe Anne has natural magical powers (like Maria in Castlevania)? Or Anne has a relation with the whole plot way deeper than we think... What do you think? Anne should be a playable character? How her gameplay could be? 2) ANNE AS AN ALTERNATIVE SHOP
Her official role right now is a shopkeeper alongside Dominique. Whe Dominique is out of town, Anne will take care of her shop. That begs the question if Anne's shop will be different than Dominique's. Maybe the little girl can't handle money that well and gives discounts? Or she has a whole different inventory to offer. Who knows, maybe her parents WERE alchemists or had some relation with them, and, as such, she has artifacts, relics and magical items to sell? What do you think? When Anne is taking care of the shop, her shop could be different from Dominique? How? 3) ANNE AS A QUEST-GIVER
It was stated already that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night will have quests, like Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia. Anne could offer quests (maybe Dominique too) to be completed. Maybe you could seek mementos from her parents that demons stolen for some reason, or she could have great cook abilities and you would fetch cooking items for her to create food as healing items? What do you think? Anne could offer Quests? If yes, how they would work out? That's all folks!
Discuss Dominique's role and the possibility of her being a playable character HERE (thread made by me) Discuss Alfred's role and the possibility of him being a playable character HERE (thread made by Galamoth)

1) If she is to be a playable character, I'd like her to use all sorts of weapon types she normally has in her shop (basic versions, low grade) but be skilled with them, while not being OP. This until she would find more powerful ones. Probably trained by Dominique in case of a (new?) monster invasion in the village. As for magic powers, I don't want a Maria from Rondo of Blood 2.0. 2) Nah, she will be competent when it comes to managing the shop, especially if she made a promise to their parents before the latter died. Willpower can really make miracles. A different set of items? Discounts? I'm not too keen on this, unless you bring her special items she would need or items she lost and thought never seeing again. 3) Shopkeepers always need materials and other personal items. In sum, quests could fit, even if that concept has been overused (see answer 2). And now for the killer question! Playable? Maybe if she is not a bonus character, like Galamoth defined it (she would need a motive). But in the end, would you really want her to go against demons and Gebel and so on? Maria's chances in Rondo seemed to be minuscule, but she got the powers of the four cardinal beasts and has magic power. Is Anna made of the same mold? I am quite doubtful on it. She'd better leave it to the professional demon-killers. She is perfect in a support role. Why send her to the battlefield?

I've voted No.
Anne does remind me of Maria. Knowing that she was saved by Dominique and Miriam leans to the fact that she's a really vulnerable little mouse whatever natural powers/secret items she may have. In my eyes, she's a weakling who's seems destined to meet a premature end whichever path she might take. I don't see her as a playable character because she just doesn't stand out as someone with the athleticism, experience, stamina and necessary skills to navigate such a massive castle with so many formidable enemies lying in wait.

A big issue in this game is the curse overtaking Miriam. In many stories like this, where the protagonist has a power they struggle with that could turn them evil, there is often one or more characters that really remind them of their humanity and keep them grounded - I think Anne is that character in this narrative. Anne to me seems like a humanizing character; a common person that Miriam can can connect with and help anchor her during her adventure. While its true that Anne and Maria (Rondo of Blood) were the same age, there is nothing in the material so far that suggests she has the ability to go toe to toe with various monsters and demons. I don't think she will be playable and her design is plain enough to also discourage that assessment. With regards to the item shop, maybe Anne might be able to provide better access to more local items but I expect changes to the shop to be more influenced by where/when you are in the game rather than who is the shopkeeper at the time. Anne is described as a normally happy girl but the art we have for her is pretty morose. I would think, especially after that experience with her family, she would be a pretty mature girl for her age. I don't think there is any reason to dumb her down or infantilize her or make her too stupid to handle money. For quest giving, yeah I see no reason you couldn't do that and I'd just make it work like it has in previous Castlevania games. I don't think you need to get fancy here or over-complicate things. FUTURE DIRECTIONS:
So as I said, my expectations for Anne is as a humanizing NPC not a playable character. However, that doesn't mean things can't change in the future. A great point Saint Germain brought up is the passing similarity Anne bears to Sonia Belmont: I could totally imagine, if Bloodstained takes off, Anne taking on the role of MC in Bloodstained 2 after some years have past, she's grown up and bulked up, and done some training. Some people are still a bit sore over what IGA did to Sonia (I've seen recent comments online from people who feel this way) and since Miriam is so closely associated with Swords, we don't really have a "whip girl". A grown up Anne taking on the role of a Sonia expy (similar to how Miriam is a Shanoa expy) in the future could be a nice, respectful nod to the fate of Sonia Belmont and I think make a lot of people in the community happy.

Anne having her own inventory to sell might be an interesting one. Maybe in the sequel she can be playable.

Using shop stocks (that are meant to be sold) on the battlefield is not only unethical, but broken too. In that case, Anne would go "oh, I'll just gather max out all of the goods I can and go fight". Bloodstained is not a RPG parody.
Besides, if she were to be fighting, Dominique would be taking the shopkeeper's role. There is a business to maintain. (of course the inverse is true as well)

While i agree, she wouldn't be the best choice for playable now, if anyone would be interested in alchemy, it would be someome already dabbling in potions and magical items and trinkets.

I've always dug alchemist-type setups with bomb potions and so on, and try to use them(i.e. Diablo II exploding flasks), but every mmo/action rpg game I've played that toys with the idea doesn't do more than toy. They're never viable for late-game combat, only helping out early on. I'd love to come across a game where the idea is completely realized.

The gameplay for that pretty much exactly matches what you want (though I should mention that your mobility is also tied to bomb/potion use). That sort of gameplay is not at all what I'd expect from Anne though if she ever became playable. As an aside, I noticed that Anne looks a bit like a younger Doris Lang from Vampire Hunter D. Lang ALSO uses whips in combat. Doris predates Sonia Belmont - I wonder if their aesthetic similarities are just coincidence or intentional? I wonder if the aesthetic similarities between those two and Anne are just coincidence or intentional? I have no idea if Mana can actually offer any insight into this right now or must keep her lips sealed but........we see what you might be doing Doris Lang (from the Vampire Hunter D OVA) for those who don't know her:

Sonia always reminded me of Doris, yeah. I don't see that much of it in Anne, though.
Her appearance and name are rather plain. My interpretation of the situation is that she will take the shop when Dominique's role becomes greater (to the point of playable). Much more is definitely a further leap than the other characters.

To be extra clear, I don't think Anne will be playable in this game for many of the exact same reasons you just spelled out & what I said my earlier post in the thread. I'm merely speculating if seeds are being laid down for the future (Bloodstained 2, etc.). One of the most appealing aspects of the Castlevania series was the manner in which all the games were interconnected. I don't know how many years as a designer IGA has left in him but it seems like the most prudent thing for IGA to do is to at least lay down the groundwork for this to become a series that he, or someone else who takes on the mantle later, can continue on. Obviously the focus should be on this game but the more groundwork you can lay down at the beginning, the more smoothly things go in the future. Less retcons and other nonsense. These aesthetic similarities could all easily be just coincidence too

Oh, for sure, I think that may be while he has struggled for so long now with writing out the game's initial story - I imagine he realizes this is the start of an entire new mythos and wants to be able to lay out a long game of interconnectedness a bit better than Castlevania originally did. That would definitely be a wise way to go.
What little I know right now, I think I can say that it'd be damn awesome if Anne grew up to be analogous to Sonia/Doris, because I too felt that hole in the canon of there not being a female Belmont and it sounds great. I'm down if that's the case later on, but on topic from all we can see for Anne playable in present Bloodstained, I'm leaning no.

Eh, if we were to get a child playable character in this series, I'd rather go the route of Judgment!Eric rather than Young Maria or Carrie Fernandez. The whole archetype of "kick ass little girls" has been over done in Japanese media to death. Miriam is already just barely 18, if I remember correctly I could be wrong though, so rather than having two youthful female playable characters I'd prefer the playable cast be more diverse.
as for her running a shop, depends on what shed sell. From what I understand theres this hope that Miriam might get customizable rooms she can decorate how she wants, or at the very least one decorative room. Maybe Anne could sell clothing, furniture, and such like that for Miriams customizable room in the palace. another thing she could sell could be clothing accessories, like earrings, hats, and scarves and such, to function as armor.

I don't see Anne being playable now, but maybe she serves an alternate purpose to the plot. Maybe she starts seeing a new purpose for preserving alchemy, since the events of the plot kicked off from that goal.

Have you played Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows? Haha, yeah I have it. In the first draft of the post I mentioned "aside from Plague of Shadows", but figured I'd change the sentence to specify I meant non-turn-based RPGs in particular. I really liked the way you combined fuse and explosion types to get the types of bombs you wanted. There were some pretty good ways to exploit their mechanics for shenanigans.
