Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night features a magic type called Shard Sytem. Most of demons crystalize their power on a special crystal called Shard, and those Shards can be absorbed by Miriam's body, giving her special magics. The Demo showed us that the game will have 5 types of Shards: Trigger, Effective, Directional, Enchant and Familiar.
The Demo showed us some magics already: Trigger: Cerulean Slash (from Seama), Head Flail (from Dullahammer), Cast Amy (from Amy). Directional: Fire Cannon (from Morte Cannon). Enchant: CON Boost (from Buer). At update 15, on June 2015, the dev team showed us some magics that the game will have, before the Shard system being presented. So, i have three questions for us to discuss: FIRST QUESTION: The magics and skills showed at Update 15 on June 2015 will fit in what enemies and what Shard Types? (you can make up enemies as parallels with old Castlevania games too. Also, consider all Shard types and how the ones we didn't saw yet can work) Gluttony SummonAttacks enemy by summoning an angry spirit that devours anything and everything in its path.Magical ThroneMaterializes a chair that speeds up MP replenishment. Looks very relaxing.WinestainedThrows a wineglass in anger, increasing the effectiveness of certain abilities.SECOND QUESTION: What is a "Seventh" ability?
That same update 15 showed us an ability that it's description says it is not a demonic one, it is a "Seventh" ability, called Voltic Chain (a nod to Azure Striker Gunvolt, also from Inti Creates). If it is not a demonic ability, that means this will not come from a Shard, right? If not, how we will get this power? There will be other Seventh Powers? They are unlockable, innate abilities from Miriam's natural alchemist power? (like Alucard and his dark magic such as hellfire and such) or maybe from relics/magical itens? What "Seventh" means? Seventh sense? (Saint Seiya nod ) Voltic ChainSummons electrified chains to attack all enemies with electric volts. This is a special “seventh" ability—not a demonic one.THIRD QUESTION: Did you like the Shard System? What you think the system needs to have to improve?
Evolving Shards by obtaining more shards of the same type? Shards that can be changed by others Shards or special itens? New Shard Types? How the gameplay will be for Effective and Familiar Shards? That's all folks!

Ah, I brought up this very topic in my Special Attacks/Inputs thread not long ago. My thoughts are that these could be baseline special moves rather than shard abilities. They would be the equivalent of Alucard's spells.
The example I'm talking about is...do you remember the special moves update from around this time last year? All of those actions seemed more linked to Miriam herself, not demonic abilities, but more native to her as a character and available as a baseline. Recalling some of them: "Winestained" throw: Perhaps the one most everyone would remember. It's not really something that strikes you as a monster ability as it is, and was said to increase the effectiveness of other things. Sounds kind of like a Metamorphosis type spell/mode buff. Voltic Chain: A Gunvolt throwback more than anything I suppose, but part of its description specifically says "not a demonic ability". Magical Throne: This was noted as a method for -speeding up- the rate of MP recharging, so it having an MP consumption like a shard ability doesn't seem to make sense. These things seem like options separate from monster drops that she would have just after discovering them or even from the start. There could be more of them, too. That said, I would be completely fine with them just using special inputs only for weapons, or perhaps for specific shards. My main point though is that they seem to have accounted for moves that were independent of demon shards. Crocodile brought up the possibility that some of these could be shards from something like an aristocrat/noble enemy, something like a lesser Olrox or a demon butler maybe? But I don't know, it seems like something else. More on that!: I think part of the puzzle too is how these attacks specifically (as well as other pieces of concept art early-on) seemed to be centered around the thought/idea of crystal and glass. Everything I mentioned could be made of one or the other. Wine glass: obviously either, Voltic chain: could be crystalline?, magical throne: probably crystal Most of these things seem to come from Miriam's back rose, too, yeah...which is a protruding crystal. I'm wondering if at some point she will be able to materialize crystal/glass similarly at will, from/due to crystal in her. Kind of like a more limited Iceman-style ability, if you will, just with this substance instead. Speaking of the concept art again, I remember one weapon in particular, a hammer/halberd type thing having a very glasslike appearance, and almost all of the concept weapons have an appearance of blue/green stained glass near their hilts. I'm thinking this crystal/glass production may also tie in to her alchemy creations -- i.e. she can produce the substance through crafting/creation of weapons as well as with special attacks. That's why I would think this seems separate from specifically monster stuff. However, this may have been their original direction and they changed it to something much more Sorrow-y entirely, or I may be off completely, but that's what it kind of appeared like to me early on and is more or less still plausible now. As far as these being shard abilities, yeah, that's definitely what it looks like from all we know from the demo, but if this early information still stands, it's something to think about.
I do think that the "seventh ability" statement for Voltic Chain was more a Gunvolt reference than anything, and maybe they hadn't sorted out the shard system at that time, but points still stand.

Well, he said some shards you will find in chests in the game. So they could be these, and i'd imagine they serve as the 'relics'. So double jump, super jump, some magic abilities ( button combo spells).

Wait...he said that you find shards in chests? I must have missed that bit The abilities shown in Update 15 seem like would be found rather than obtained through enemies. The "Magic Throne" you could maybe obtain from an enemy. DoS had something similar with the Ouija Table but...C'set le vie.
I like the Shard System from what I've seen so far (Even if getting the Amy shard nearly killed me). I haven't seen enough for the system to say if it needs any improvement....but....the Amy gave me DoS flashbacks.

Yeah, with romscout he said that some shards will be found in chests. ( probably abilities ) which will serve as relics I'd imagine. So special spells, button input action moves, double jump.
Stuff like that.

I think that the seventh ability will have some tie in with hidden elements of the game. not sure how 'Voltic Chains' specifically would be incorporated into this, but it's just a gut feeling that I have nonetheless.
Also, I love the shard system. DoS and AoS are my favorite IGAvania games, so it's so cool to see this concept touched on again.
ALSO, I get a feeling that shards will be able to get increased in power by means of Alchemy. Notice how there's a 'Quality' bar under said shards? I did. :p

I think it may have something to do, too, with just how I'm not into being part demon/imitating demons haha. I also must say that I love Charlotte from PoR. Though, I suppose she plays similarly to Soma, as in she learns her own spells, along with 'monster spells'.
