Iga et al. held a panel today at Anime Expo. Not much new info about Bloodstained was divulged but a lot was discussed, especially about Iga, which I think many here would still like to hear about. This summary is mostly put together from what I could derive from the RPGsite twitter. This random person was also at the panel and had a few bits to add. If more information, or a video, comes out, I’ll add it.
Iga’s Early Life and Career
Bloodstained
Q & A
Iga’s Early Life and Career
- Iga said he used to work for [Konami]. In the beginning, he wasn't supposed to use his own name in the credits.
- Tokimeki Memorial was the first game Iga did the scenario for. Normally does the programming, but there did the writing.
- Since Iga was forbidden to use his own name, he used a codename like he did in the arcade. Thus, IGA was born.
- He used IGA at the end credits as a writer. The game became a big hit, so used it for the rest of his career.
- Iga became a game designer randomly. At school, he studied sound technology as a major. He really wanted to make children's toys.
- Iga said he spent months after college job hunting. Had an agreement to work for a certain company but had a falling out and decided not to go there.
- Iga's job hunting didn't work out. His senpai who works at [Konami] wanted him to work there instead so he applied and got hired.
- Iga joined [Konami] not as a game designer but a programmer. There were 3 groups - designers, programmers, sound designers.
- Before Iga knew it, he was a game designer because of [Konami]'s structure.
- As a kid Iga drew a lot and wanted to be a manga artist. In middle school, he had a friend who was way better so he became discouraged and quit
- One of Iga's hobbies was riding motorcycles. [Konami] prohibited him from riding it there. So he mostly rode in secret. Because Tokimeki was a big hit, [Konami] was ok with the latter arrangement.
Bloodstained
- Igakept hearing fans' voices to make a new 2D Castlevania, so he used Kickstarter to make a game the fans wanted.
- Iga brought the proposal to big name publishers, but they felt Bloodstained was too old school. Heard of Inafune's success (MN9) so used it
- Iga said the game system isn't anything spectacularly new - fans will use the crystals from enemies to absorb powers
- Bloodstained's story strongly involves the fight over wealth, its distribution and the use of religious fear.
- Even in Bloodstained, Iga felt like the game needed to have a castle.
- Hardest part of development has been managing the budget and rolling out a new company (Art Play Japan branch?)
- Best part of development has been hearing fans enjoying his work
Q & A
- Iga said his favorite Castlevania game is still Symphony of the Night in large part because it's his most memorable
- Iga said he still considers himself a beginner designer and his favorite Castlevania game after SotN is Aria of Sorrow. Aria of Sorrow is also his favorite narrative of those he’s worked on.
- For what qualities make a game great, Iga feels rather than logic, it's what players want to see in it and what players find fun
- With Symphony of the Night, it used to be linear with completing stages. He wanted it to be much more open to be more fun
- Iga incorporated what he felt was fun and thinks the fans agree on Symphony of the Night
- To help regain confidence after Mighty No. 9, Iga said he will strive to make games fans will enjoy
- Iga said this business is really hit and miss. Sometimes what they make syncs with what fans want, sometimes not
- Iga wants to keep in constant communication with the Kickstarter backers to incorporate their thoughts
