I agree it can be quite awkward simply because of the fact that SOME pieces of armor DO change her look, whilst other do NOT change it. I think that they should keep it so that the scarf is the only customizable thing, along with whatever other form of customization can occur, but head pieces should NOT change her look.
Just to keep things as consistent as possible. :]

I don't think "armor" will changes Miriam's look, I'm hoping there will be a place you can specifically change Miriam's looks and costumes... maybe her room? or in the "system" part of the menu.

The other thing to consider is how body equipment will interact with Miriam's crystal and aura effects. The crystal flower on her back is an important part of her design, after all, so I imagine most armors would have to either have the same opening on her back her present dress does, or find another way to deal with the glow, petals, etc. from behind her. It may be more practical to just leave her look as it is, especially since her "basic" dress is so distinctive. Yeah this is something I had been thinking about too. The mark on her chest is also clearly important as well - you even see her jam the demon shards into it. So I'm curious if Pure Miriam is supposedly to play differently from Miriam (no Magic?) or the same and what that might mean for other costumes. If they will keep it all narratively consistent (which I think would be cool and I'd like) or just say fuck it (since it would be easier).

Ok, I'm going to say right here that I'm an indie game dev. That does NOT make my opinions or perspective any more useful than anyone else's though, just different.
So with that said, I think that gear items only modifying the character's stats is adopting the limitations of a medium that this game isn't a part of. If SotN had the option I don't think the devs would have hesitated to give Alucard's gear a physical presence when equipped. There are actually few better ways to create immersion in a game than seeing the player's choices reflected in the minute to minute actions during gameplay. Games like Dark Souls or Darksiders have illustrated this beautifully. Ignoring the visual presence of equipping gear in a modern game is all but inexcusable. Even modern 2D games often understand this, such as Salt and Sanctuary.
Gear visibly modifying the character is certainly feasible. It only comes down to whether or not BS's devs want to impose past limitations on themselves for the sake of nostalgia. Personally, I think if you're going to make the choice to jump to full 3D game development then do it right and go all the way. If you're not going to use the 3D medium's advantages, then why do 3D at all?
