After May update, i was struck by a question from my own head. This is the first kickstarter game i'm really following, but i know many other projects. And most of them shows A LOT OF THINGS before releasing the actual game. Might no 9 went as far as to talk about the last boss already. People know almost everything the game has to offer, in details. I didn't even search around it too much to not be spoiled. And that's the reason i made this thread. Each update offers us more details, enemies and information about the game. And more spoilers. If everything follows as planned, we will have 9~10 more updates before the game's launch. I have the fear that we will know, play and hear much more than we should. I don't want Bloodstained to have what is happening to Might no 9. The game will launch soon, and, if you search about it, you can know 90% of the game without playing it. I know this is a hard thing to do, but i needed to bring this subject. Something must happen to the updates from now on, here's some ideas: 1) The monthly update could elaborate on things we already know but weren't fully clarified yet, like some of the stretch goals. 2) Some updates could be just some IGA answering some interesting questions. There also could have a update to show Miriam's artwork redesigned with her new ribbons. 3) The team should refrain from having a monthly update until the game's release (if it will really be ready at march 2017). Maybe one update each two months. As i said before, i know this is hard to do, many people want to see the game and the team want to keep us interested. But they really need to start thinking about this. I don't want Bloodstained to be spoiled all around before the game coming out. Thank you for your attention =)

Just purely for transparency and accountability reasons, they have to do updates. Then, you have to consider the excitement of the fans. A certain amount of detail has to go out there for the consumers. I'm a MN9 backer and I didn't even know that about the boss, which adds another point - you're largely responsible for how spoiled/not spoiled you are. At this point and later, it might be wise to not watch videos showcasing areas, if they continue to do that. It's more or less the individual's responsibility, and the communication/excitement areas shouldn't suffer because a certain demographic have personal issue with when they see something. We talked about this a good bit starting here in Design Review: bloodstainedfanforums.com/post/25400/threadYou might notice I'm one of those that hates spoilers - I blacked myself out completely on Souls 3 recently for example. That's a different situation, though. I'm connected and involved with the growth and community of this game, and it having a strong start and doing well is something important to me. With From Software, I'm more or less just letting them do what they do, and then experience it on my own time. Anyway, yeah, my first paragraph sums up how I feel about the whole thing.

Gonna be frank, Pure Miriam: a bunch of what you're suggesting is a good way to make a lot of people upset over time.
When people are invested in a project monrtarily they want to know what's going on with it. You can see it in other kickstarters when developers go silent for a long time people get upset.
So if you say you don't want to know too much you have to ask yourself: what is too much? If they do updates every two months it is a fewer amount of updates but there's still a chance you're going to be spoiled on something. And they're already doing the other yeoman suggestions you gave.
If you're really worried about finding out too much there's also just not looking at the updates. You don't have to worry about being spoiled and the people that do want that info still gets it.

Well, one way to avoid spoilers for a dev where demos and beta is to do what yooka laylee have done in having a toybox demo that is essentially a glorified test map with no connection to the story(the upside is it frees the dev up for literally anything to be put in and it doesnt have to make sense, the downside is the extra time needed to make a throwaway map), another is what iga and others have done with showing an intro or tutorial stage, something short, already in development, and a low level of difficulty for new players, as for story, thats pretty much unavoidable with ks projects, because you become an investor in the game, you gain access to many things an investor would but the average gamer wouldnt, such as progress reports, the story and how its supposed to draw in people and get them hooked, sequel and franchise plans to keep people coming back with their money, its just presented slightly differently because were also the consumers of the product
So teal deer, its kind of a double edged sword, there has to be something to make you go ooh i wanna play that, but to do that requires some degree of spoilage

I made a poll about this 1 year ago: bloodstained.forums.net/thread/272/poll-monthly-ks-updateI voted for "prefer to know nothing" but... you know what happens. I found myself refreshing Bloodstained Kickstarer page at the start of every month. If you don't want to be spoiled, you can just not look at the updates. But can you handle the torture? XD And if you can handle that, the real torture test is yet to come: the Beta! I for one wouldn't be able to resist the Beta. Hell, I even dreamed about the bloody Demo last night as I keep watching it xxx times now. You can think of the updates this way: this is your only chance to experience it. To be part of the big team that make this game a reality. Even SOTN cant give you this kind of experience.

IMO as long as they don't spoil anything about main game event (like reverse castle in SoTN) or main character relationship, I'd be okay with updates. Honestly I don't know what's going on with MN9, but most devs won't let their games leak out like that before launch...
Until now, we get shaders, character models, some mob enemies, background, and the upcoming demo contains a tutorial stage and the first boss... Remeber those sharewares from 90s? You can play a chunk of the game, get a grasp of the product but that's all it could offer. Product-wise, our updates works kinda like these, instead of spoiler, they're more like teaser. But the more important thing is, as jboogieg stated before, it's a connection between the devs and backers, people want to know the progress on devs and want to be a part of it, that's the most critical part of crowdfunding and all stuff with that IMO.

I agree with most of what you said. Of course, there can't be spoiler-free updates, but it would be nice to tone down a little. From here on, i think we should get a glimpse of the castle and such. The general gameplay system, through, i don't have any problem with it.
About "Just don't look at it", well, it is hard, of course, since i'm inside the same Minerva-Boat as you all and want to see how things are going. I just thought this could be a interesting discussion.

With all due respect Pure Miriam all your ideas expressed here are somewhat ill-advised (and a little selfish?). If you really want to be spoiler-free, which is a perfectly fine stance to take, the onus is on you to avoid the kickstarter updates and not partake in internet conversations about them game not for the developers to communicate worse with the backers. Crowdfunding only works if there is a sense of trust/community built and maintained between the project manager(s) and the backers. We've already given them out money. The only way to hold them accountable is to make sure we know the progress of development and to do that you have to show off some locales, areas, weapons, characters, enemies, moves & spells, etc. This requires a lot of transparency - much more than for standard game development. Furthermore, this interaction allows for the opportunity for feedback which can make for a stronger end product. Silence is pretty much the fastest way to lose backer confidence and engender bad sentiments that can severely harm the commercial success of the project as well as your reputation. I'd also argue that a game that is no longer worth playing after its been spoiled wasn't worth your time anyway and for all the Kickstarter projects I've followed, they'll been pretty good about avoiding real spoilers in their updates. There is nothing to "tone down" and I don't think "spoiler culture" is something that should be given into.

Pure Miriam Unfortunately we live in the age of social media, so spoilers are hard to avoid once they leak out. The only way to keep yourself 100% pure is to go completely offline, but let's be honest... You're reading the updates and engaging this community to satisfy your curiosity and share your excitement with like-minded fans. Here's the problem. One man's spoiler is another man's news. A purist might call the Minerva update a "spoiler" and in a way it is. But we need to remember that Igarashi published this information to maintain backer confidence and promote the game. This is marketing. Igarashi's been doing this a long time, and I'll trust his judgment regarding what I need to know. IMO a "spoiler" is a surprise the producer wants to keep secret... I'f you're reading this. You like spoilers. Cheers.

I'f you're reading this. You like spoilers. Cheers. That reminds me of some policies old message boards I visited before social media took off had. If it was information from an official or reputable source and meant to be known (press releases, trailers, announcements, interviews, magazine articles), it usually wasn't a spoiler. If it was from a leak (a fan getting their hands on something early, an employee or voice actor accidentally giving away info they weren't supposed to, toy companies displaying action figures of unannounced characters for events geared towards the marketing/business audience rather than fans, etc), it was considered a spoiler. There's also the nature of the game to consider. I'm usually okay with games that are gameplay-driven or have minimal story giving away their final bosses and areas since they're usually pretty straightforward with what the player can expect. I tend to avoid discussion on story-driven games (RPGs, Telltale games, Metal Gear Solid, Undertale) until after I play them since the story is the big selling point.
With Bloodstained, I can see both sides of the spoiler issue. I want to keep an eye on the game, read and discuss the Kickstarter updates, there'll probably be more of an emphasis on gameplay than story, and people should avoid reading updates at their own discretion. As mentioned earlier, things like the Minerva aren't really what a lot of people would consider spoilers since it's part of a public demo, setting context for the game, and meant to be known. At the same time I would greatly appreciate it if everyone involved with the updates (IGA, Artplay, Inti, and Fangamer?) used discretion towards keeping a fair amount of Bloodstained's story details, areas, and bosses withheld until release since exploration and discovery are a big part of IGAvanias. I have a feeling this could already be the case and those involved with the updates have a general idea of what share and what to keep secret.

I do not want too much spoiler either, however it seems pretty hard not to show things on a KS project, not to mention there is no way to avoid spoilers from the beta, they can be minimized though. I do not believe the updates will show that much, the problem here would be the beta, people would need to just not read/watch/play it, there is not much more to do besides that. So far i did not see it revealing that much, let's see the demo (i suppose it would be quite short) and the next updates.

Unless it's a FromSoft dark fantasy game, I can't see how they can keep the game 'hidden'.
I think knowing general things about the game does help the audience, as well as showing off parts of the game to players. I'm sure they'll be careful on what they show off, because they have to show something.
Showing off the earlier stages of the game is probably the safest bet they have. Most of IGA's games have been previewed and showcased in this manner.

As others have mentioned, monthly updates are pretty necessary. A lot of people have hundreds if not THOUSANDS of dollars invested in the game, and in general people want to see updates as an assurance that the game is on track. If devs go quiet people get angry. Heck, pop over to the KS page comments section for this very game towards the end of the month and you will see people getting antsy about getting their news on time, every time.
As for content, I think what we've seen is fair: A couple of weapon designs, some sections of the very first stage, and 3 enemies of what will likely by out of dozens in the final bestiary. The average trailer shows a great deal more than this. granted we've got a year to go, likely a bit longer than a year, so we will see more, but I have confidence that IGA and the team won't show us something insane like the Gebel fight, or go into detail about characters and stories. At BEST we may get a brief look at how Zangetsu plays.
What I predict is: -Details on how the graphics are progressing as players point out flaws like clipping or lighting sources, etc. -Player feedback on the Demo and how they plan to address concerns -Details on a handful of Miriam's abilities: like in-game footage of her Wine-toss or Conjure-Throne spells. -Maybe a familiar or two, a couple more weapons -One or two other locations to demonstrate the variety in the level design and assure fans that its not all dark hallways and bell towers (obviously we've already got a ship but I mean things like a Garden or something) -Details on what the launch will include since its a hot topic for us right now -Flesh out the modes unlocked via stretch goals -IGA's cosplay promise this October

Also, I bet they have MUCH more stuff that they're still not showing us. So you don' have to worry about being spoiled. What you see is what Iga think it's spoiler-free.
It's possible that they have 10+ bosses, 100+ weapons, 500+ rooms done by now. But they only show us the Galleon Minerva. =)

I think we'll all find that over after all of the updates are over and we actually have the game in our hands to play (so to speak), we will see that the updates are but a fraction of the content that will be there for us to explore and discover without being spoiled :-)
