I'm a pretty big fan of X-Men and New Mutants. Pretty much everything up until the late 90s. Today I saw this and I can't wait for it!

Oh man that looks pretty damn good... *and* it gets mad style points for using a remix of X-Men '92 animated series intro theme for music.
And yeah another big X-Men fan. Read *some* comics when I was young (and watched the animated series of course), which in turn led me to trying to catch up on *all* related comics much later on in life. Been going on with it for... last five or six years at least, and I'm *almost* caught up.

This era of the team/the animated series Fox did is something very close to Castlevania for me as far as being a fan...thanks for the link, Mike, I'm looking forward to this now!

Heh, you should check out Rachel and Miles X-Plain the X-Men. It's a great show that starts from the beginning of X-Men and explains it's entire history pretty much issue by issue.

I missed out on all of the X-Men stuff from the 90's like the cartoon, comics, and action figures because I wasn't allowed to watch/read/play with them back then. My first proper exposure to X-Men was seeing the original movie in theaters.
As for the comics, I've read the Dark Phoenix Saga, some of Astonishing and Ultimate X-Men, Marvel MAX: Wolverine, and my copy of God Loves, Man Kills is autographed by Chris Claremont.

If you can, try to get your hands on original Exiles run (it's great and pretty much self contained) and Excalibur run (also pretty good but suffers from a bit of a dip in the middle). Just two storylines that came to my mind when I read this.

Oh wow! That's a great addition to any collection! I know you like podcasts. If you want, check out Rachel and Miles. Thanks. A handful of fans at the signing made fun of me for bringing that instead of my copy of The Dark Phoenix Saga (there was a one item per person limit), but I wasn't too bothered by them. God Loves, Man Kills is my favorite X-Men story because it resonated with me on a personal level (along with X-Men 2, which was the reason I bought GLMK). I'd rather not go into detail about why it did in public right now, but the scene at the end where the X-Men talk to Stryker made me feel better about everything regarding my life in general. I just subscribed to Rachel and Miles and I'm downloading a bunch of episodes right now. If you can, try to get your hands on original Exiles run (it's great and pretty much self contained) and Excalibur run (also pretty good but suffers from a bit of a dip in the middle). Just two storylines that came to my mind when I read this. I'll keep those in mind. Thanks for the recommendation!

Cool, just start from the beginning. God Loves, Man Kills is where Magneto really starts to become my favorite Marvel character of all time.

Cool, just start from the beginning. God Loves, Man Kills is where Magneto really starts to become my favorite Marvel character of all time. I heard he started out as just another cheesy silver age villain before Chris Claremont turned him into a more complex character. Most of what I've seen from Magneto has been from GLMK, the movies, some of the Ultimate comics, and I've liked what I've seen. Except for X-Men 3. The other movies tried going for a MLK and Malcom X dynamic between Prof X and Magneto and I felt that one turned him into a mustache-twirling villain.

I don't like the movies. Some of the Wolverine stuff is good though. Magneto started out super lame, but so did the X-Men. The think I like about Magneto is that when he was written properly he was a character that was taking on a global problem and was doing the best in making the decisions he could to make the world a better place. I don't like the Malcolm X analogy. The New Mutants is an excellent book, and Magneto was their teacher for a long time. The thing that breaks him... I can totally empathize with why he's done the things he has done. He really does care about mutants, and he tries to give humans the benefit of the doubt when he can, but people are just horrible sometimes and his vigilante attitude extends to global scales. He would rather no one die, but he does what needs to be done from his view.
My favorite moment was when he ripped the adamantium from Wolverine. The few comics that followed that up were great too. It's a shame that not too long after that I fell out of touch with comics, and when I looked at how things were going with the stories after I stopped I simply couldn't care about them at all. I have early Wolverine issues of both the mini and his regular series and I didn't care at all when he died... I'm kind of weird in that I only care about Giant Size X-Men to about where they made Wolverine de-evolve due to his healing factor.

Seems the creator reuploaded the vid to vimeo and has it available on www.joelfurtado.comAnd still plans on releasing more. Not sure if a smart decision to be honest. Edit: Aaand now that site lists the video as unavailable. RIP X-Men Danger Room Protocols

So... Deadpool (the movie) is out in theaters in the USA this weekend and that character has a lot of roots with the X-Men. Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead show up. Has anyone here seen it yet or plan on seeing it? I enjoyed it. The story felt like a typical and formulaic one, but I wasn't too bothered by that since I felt the comedy, violence, and overall raunchy tone were pulled off well and that was the main reason I wanted to see it. It's a good "let's play in the mud and get dirty" movie. I also liked how Deadpool (the character) breaks the fourth wall in ways that feel appropriate for film instead of using text boxes/voices in his head like the comics. There is also a post-credits scene at the very end. Vague but still possibly spoiler-filled observations if you consider funny moments in comedy to be spoilers like I do. I may have misheard some things due to the movie being drowned out by the audience's laughter. -The movie was largely based on a leaked script that floated around and was talked about by fans for a while. I don't recall how much was similar and how much was different, but I'm pretty sure some of the pop culture gags like Deadpool's Adventure Time watch and a Subway joke were added later. -The opening credits with the fake titles was great, and it was a nice tease for the action sequence that happened a little bit later. -I got a bit of a Hotline Miami vibe from Deadpool trying to save twelve bullets while taking out the henchmen quickly. Also, their numbers appeared on the back as he counted his shots! -With the way the movie was edited/structured with flashbacks, I kinda wish all the highway stuff was more spread out over the movie instead of getting a bunch of it of right at the beginning. -The first scene that featured Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead felt exposition-heavy, but overall I liked how the characters were used with Negasonic being disinterested/dismissive towards Deadpool and Colossus acting as a foil for him. -The sex montage is probably my favorite "aww, they really are made for each other" moment I've seen across any media. -For those who are curious, International Women's Day is March 8th. -It's never mentioned if the group that recruited Deadpool was Weapon X or not, they're just "a private organization". -If you pay attention right after the fight scene where the lab is on fire, you can see Deadpool's wang. -I would've liked to have seen Colossus try to recruit Deadpool during the flashbacks instead of him just mentioning that detail in the present. -I can't tell if my favorite gag in the movie is intentional or a technical inconsistency that was overlooked in post-production. Deadpool gets shot in his anus early in the movie and it shows up as a black spot in his costume. When Colossus and Negasonic are talking to him later on, that black spot had a metallic color and it looked like he was slowly pooping out that bullet. However, I don't remember seeing or hearing it fall out later on.
Cameo and shout-out details (spoiler'd for those who don't want punchlines given away or want to be surprised). -I liked how Hugh Jackman fit into the movie. -Two Rob Liefeld mentions. First, his name is on a piece of paper during the opening credits and I think he was one of the henchmen in the van that pulled up next to the one Deadpool dropped into. Second, Deadpool walks by Rob Liefeld in Weasel's bar and greets him. -There were a bunch of names listed on the chalkboard at Weasel's bar. I didn't get a good look at the whole thing, but I noticed a few familiar last names and one of them was Sheen (Charlie Sheen?). -Fabian Nicieza has a road named after him according to a sign in the background during a highway scene. -The X-Men Origins: Wolverine version of Deadpool found its way into the movie for five seconds. -I wanna say the mutant with spikes on their body is a cameo of Spike from X-Men: Evolution, but it's probably just a random mutant or test subject. -"MacAvoy or Stewart?" -Stan Lee's strip club! -Yay, Fox found a way to include Bob while dancing around Marvel's Hydra movie rights issues! -If what Deadpool tells the audience about Deadpool 2 in the post-credits scene is anything to go by, I'd actually be okay with Mel Gibson playing Cable.
