So I realized there isn't an actual thread for this, just stuff on the Smash Bros thread, so here it is. - It's been announced the release will be episodic in nature. How many episodes, and their length, is unknown, as well as all other details. - Barret was already Mr. T. He is now even more Mr. T. People want him to not wear sunglasses at night. - The voices could indeed use some work. Wedge in particular, but maybe that little issue will be specific to that scene. - ATB gauge makes a return, but how exactly that works is not clear. The UI in general is likely a placeholder (as was the case with early FFXV trailers). - The environment itself, as well as how each event plays out, looks remarkably faithful to the original work, albeit much more fleshed out. Message from Yoshinori Kitase about the game being episodic. Non-spoiler relevant video: Some slight clarification on the episodic structureNew Screenshots.
Having worked on the entire XIII series in various programming roles and XIV, as well as being the project leader for Mobius Final Fantasy, I have some amount of confidence in this decision. I personally like the XIII games, and play XIV to death, and I tried Mobius and while it's mobile nature wasn't for me, it did seem like a solid game. Nomura will continue to work on the game, but due to his time being taken up by other titles will have Naoki Hamaguchi as his co director in order to develop the game properly.
Of course this announcement makes it seem that FF7 Remake is even further off than what I imagined, but I do feel like it spells good news for the actual products quality itself.

I'm on board. I'm just hoping we get dual-audio language tracks with subtitles.

I hope the English version of the game re-works the lip sync to match the voices. I know it's hard to do, but it can help make performances feel more natural.
I'm interested in how the game is going to be divided and whether or not each episode would be treated like its own game. I can see episode 1 being all of the Midgar section, but I'm kinda clueless on how the rest of the game is going to be divided after that.

Considering the episodic nature of release, I think putting in dual-audio only makes sense. I'm absolutely all in even if it's shit, but I don't expect anyone else to feel that way (though no doubt some others do). I like most of Barret's redesign but sunglasses... really? There isn't actually much different to Barret, which I'm really surprised about. His proportions are much more seemingly realistic, while other parts are just much more prominent, like his scar (if you look back he's always had that scar). The biggest differences are probably the pouches on his legs.

Looking forward to Steve Burton's performance as crossdressing Cloud seducing Don. Regarding the episodic nature, some words from SE have put me slightly at ease. www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1152062"From the beginning, we have considered it impossible to remake FF7 into one single game. Althought it's impossible to tell you the details about the splitting at the moment, please wait for our further announcement." "If we tried to stuff the whole game into one release, some part of the game would have to appear as digests. We'd have to remove some contents from the game, and it would be difficult to add more to the game. Considering that a full remake of the original game must be achived, we have decided to split the game into episodes." "Taking the No.8 street shown in the video this time, even just this is already highly dense. If we are to remake the content of the original version at that quality, it would have been impossible to do with a single release." "Splitting the original version into episode with nothing dropped, as well as adding complements, and remaking the game the game in its full volume is what we are thinking." I'm still a bit wary, episodic is a fine concept and all, but it works better for more linear games. The original VII had quite a bit of freedom as to what you would do. I just hope we don't get another Final Hallway XIII.

VII was food for what it was. So I am excited for this even though it is artistically different than. Sakaguchi-san's version was. Courtesy or Nomura-san and his Kingdom Hearts style. But the combat reminds me of Crisis Core only without that slot machine mechanic.
Due to the Before Crisis not coming stateside or Crisis Cord not being expanded to PSN. I could imagine those, at least Crisis Core being imemented as a chapter in the VII world to come. Though that plus VII as is, plus Dirge of Cerberus, it'll be interesting what is added and what is ommited.

This game will be episodic? That's a deal breaker for me I was really looking forward to this too. Episodic really isn't the best term. I believe Square Enix US used that wording in a press release, but in truth what we're hearing now is something mroe along the lines of a single FF with sequels. I believe the people involved also worked on .hack, which was like this. So, in all likelihood, I'm thinking there will be 3-4 15-30 hour games. If they render everything FF7 has in as much detail as what we see from Midgar here, then that is definitely a lot of game and I can kind of understand it that way. Anyway, FF7 isn't really even in my top 5 FFs haha, but I'll probably still get this. I boycotted it for a long time, didn't play it until after FFX, because I felt betrayed they left 2D back when I was...12.

If I'm to be perfectly honest, what I'm actually hoping they mean by episodic, and would actually go full approval for, is that the game would be split into Parts 1, 2, and 3, into three different games on three different discs. They would span the length of each original disc with extra content to make them longer and fuller games.
That's only my hope, though. No word on that officially.
I REALLY hope that Part 1 isn't just until you leave Midgar. I really hope there won't be a year in between parts.

It will be interesting to see how they handle the split.
After all, by the time you get to the end of the game, you have access to all of the previous areas. So... how will that work with the final game in the series, and stuff you've done previously (whether you can or can't import your save across games... I would assume you would be able to).
I can't blame them for going this route from a business standpoint. This path will keep them occupied for at least 5 years...

Well this is Square we're talking about. Things could go beautifully or horribly wrong. But FF7 should bring on the pressure, like a double edged sword. If you carelessly wield its name, it will come back to hurt you. They know this, and so maybe they'll do us right with all this.
I'm excited to think about what episodic content could offer. It could potentially offer a lot and bring out the best in FF7, but it could also drag its name through the mud. The only way we're really going to find out which, is what SE tells us is going to happen, or maybe even only when the game comes out.

I'm all for content that's spread across multiple discs like the original FF7 was. I hope you had a good time when you played it. FF7 was my entry point into the series and I do agree with you there. This remake is graphically impressive so far and those graphics are likely going to take up huge amounts of space.

The funny thing is that even though I was interested in the game back when I was young I never actually played through it. I did play some part of it at one point on a borrowed copy, that much I remember, but for some reason never go full length before returning the game, and it was so so long ago I don't even remember how much of the game I went through. Then when I got Vita I bought FF7/8/9 and again didn't really touch any of them. This trailer made me buy the PS4 "Remaster"... third time is a charm, eh?

www.toonzone.net/2015/12/new-information-on-the-final-fantasy-vii-remake/ one of the newer articles on it “The idea that a remake of Final Fantasy VII would not fit into a single release was there from the very beginning. We still can’t share more information about its multiple parts, but please look forward to future announcements.” “If we dedicated our time to a single release, parts of it would become summarized. We’d have to cut some parts, and additional parts would come in few, so rather than remake the game as a full volume, we decided to do multiple parts.” How exactly the game will be split remains unclear, but the intention on Square’s part is to recreate as much of the game as they can and add new things to discover, using the increased focus on individual parts to make that a possibility. Square Enix has since further detailed to gaming press that instead of concluding in one entry, multiple entries are being considered in development. Each entry will have its own unique story. As a gaming experience, each entry will have the volume of content equal to a full-sized game.” thats the rest of the quote from the translated famitsu interview, so far i approve of everything theyve done, theyve straight up said crossdressing cloud is in the game, the atb system is still in its just been updated to be more 'actiony', kind of like how characters and enemies will move around in star ocean, theyve stated this is done specifically so they wont have to cut anything out and itll let them add stuff back in, barrets and clouds designs look like an updated form of Nomuras artwork for the original game and cloud so far has been his arrogant ass self and barrets got his wallet, so im happy that they havent been changing the characters to be more pc, wedges voice needs a little audio work, but i actually think the voice fits him really well, hes a scared guy with almost no self confidence whos doing what he thinks right (and hoping itll make him famous in the process) btw, anybody ever notice the TEXAS sign in ff7? >P

I will be 100% honest when I say I am not a fan of FFVII, like to me FFVII is to me as what Frozen is to most people. Growing Up in Jr High and High School EVERYONE was talking about FF7, if you said you were a gamer, everyone automatically assumed you had played it. And if it turns out that, like me, you hadn't, then people treated you like you were a weirdo. FFVII was ruined for me in its entirety simply due to the fans of the games who went to my schools with me constantly gushing over it, to the point I knew the games major plot points, characters, and surprise twists without having even played it.
That being said I am SO EXCITED for the FFVII Remake, if only for the fact they are dropping the turn based combat, to an action based form of combat that melds the KH style of combat with, from what I understand according to interviews, Dissidia's BravePoints/HealthPoints system. It just sounds fucking awesome. Also the fact you can, again according to interviews, play as a single character aside from cloud through the entirety of the game IF you want? I DONT always have to be in control of the emo chocobo aside from that first mission? I can play as Barret, Tifa, Yuffie, Vincent, or Red XIII when ever I want?! Yes please sign me the fuck up.
They are getting rid of my least favorite aspects of the older FF games; the turn based combat, and they are giving me the ability to play as any character I want aside from Cloud. Regardless of its horrid fan base, and my bad experiences with it growing up, I am excited for this game. And who knows, maybe they will find a way to kill off Aerith but still let her be playable after, like having her spirit come down to continue functioning as a party member only to depart after the games ending, I'll actually give a fuck about her and put effort into leveling her up.

While it's sad you don't appreciate turn based, I'm glad you're looking forward to it.
I'm not in the group that really dislikes things due to anyone elses hype. Frozen got hyped like crazy, and I walked into it prepared to hate it, but I liked the movie for the most part except for the large amount of musical singing. That said, I didn't like FF6 and probably like it even less because of everyone else's enthusiasm over it, but I don't hate it. In that regard I can totally understand you looking forward to a remake, as I want to play a remake of FF6 but don't really want to play the original.
Now, there are a few things you touched on that I don't believe are confirmed. While it looks to be confirmed that you can control other characters, there's no real confirmation as to what extent that will be. You'll most definitely have to play as Cloud during a large portion of the game, there is no way that's not happening. That said, Cloud might surprise you quite a bit in the remake.

While it's sad you don't appreciate turn based, I'm glad you're looking forward to it. I just always found turn based games to be very boring. I remember as a kid the term "RPG" on a game box is what would turn me away from a game. to me RPG meant turn based battles, which were just boring to sit through. It wasnt fun or exciting for me. I can appreciate it more as an adult, but it still bores me. The only FF games that I liked that are turn based are FF6 and FF10-2. The problem is that for me I didnt even know what Final Fantasy was, and because of that I was flat out shunned for it. School was not a fun experience for me, and my attempt at making friends with gamers, people whom I thought I could connect with, were just as rude and as mean spirited as most standard school bullies. I was teased for not knowing what FF7 was, let alone for not playing it at all. Translated interview between Square Enix and Famitsu by Siliconera.- Parties will consist of three members, and you’ll get to freely switch between the characters, but it won’t be a requirement, as you can stay as the same character for the entire time.
- As far as the battle tempo goes, Nomura wants to make it close to that of Dissidia Final Fantasy on arcade. He says that what we saw in the trailer is simply the base of Final Fantasy VII Remake’s battle system, and that he’s currently thinking of some kind of original structure for the battle system that adds a strategic element, in the midst of being able to switch through characters, an action that involves more than simply hitting enemies.
- When asked whether the battle system will be closer to Kingdom Hearts or Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Nomura says “if anything, it’s action,” and it’s completely different from Crisis Core. It might not be as much of an action title as say Dissidia Final Fantasy on arcade or the Kingdom Hearts series, but it leans more towards there.
- There is an ATB gauge, but it won’t be like the original version where you get to attack when the gauge fills up, but an action-based system that can only be done through the Final Fantasy VII Remake. Kitase says that they may even change the name to something else other than ATB. Nomura also teases that the part you’ll want to pay attention to is how “the ATB gauge may also turn red.”
