apparently the smash run video is a place holder, or so others believe, and that what ever it is is supposed to go there has yet to be officially revealed.

sssooooo ... I will be honest, as much as I detest Cloud and as overrated as I think he is, he does look fun to play as. Like they obviously did their homework when it came to coming up with his move set. Also, That FFVII stage, it looks awesome! I love the fact that the summons from FFVII will actually come in and attack it. stages with Gimicks are usually my favorite stages to play on.

I'm on the fence with Cloud. Sure it is cool to have that kind of representation. But there is no real reason that he should have been the FF character of choice when FF7 won't be on a Nintendo console till the remake hits the NX and others.
I dunno, but I feel there are other FF characters a little more deserving of that spotlight.

Despite the amount of hatred I may get from the Internet, I have to ask. Am I wrong to be more interested in the chocobo hats than the actually fighter?
Don't get me wrong. Cloud is an ok guy or at least before he became the Shinji Ikari of Final Fantasy. I would have liked Cecil better.
Then again. Do I get to complain? I only voted for one guy during the ballot. 3 guess who.

My reaction during the reveal was more like this.
I used to be a big Final Fantasy fan during the 00's and if Cloud was announced for Brawl, I probably would've been as excited as Max. But as I've grown older and my personal tastes changed, I've realized some fun things were only meant to be temporary. Final Fantasy was one of those things.
I'm glad everyone else is having fun and getting excited, though.

I'm in the middle regarding Cloud's inclusion.
I'm not totally excited for it, but I'm not against it either. His moveset does look cool, though.
Who knows? Maybe this is a sign that the Final Fantasy VII Remake will have an NX version in addition to the PS4 version.

One thing to say, because I've seen some argument across the internet over this.
Cloud was most likely not the winner of the Smash Ballot.
The Ballot closed last month or so with a winner picked. To assume that they've (mostly) created the character, the stage, voicework, his render, Mii Fighter headpieces, and etc. in a month is to be extremely naïve about all this. Realistically, Cloud's probably been under construction since shortly after E3 ended. I am extremely doubtful that he's the Ballot winner. If he was, his model would likely be a rush job with easily noticed graphical oddities to it.
My hope for the Ballot winner, and the one whom I voted for, is the Inklings from Splatoon. (My first Ballot pick was for Solid Snake to return, but then Konami went completely insane, soooo...) Splatoon being Nintendo's newest IP, having a lot of vibrant life to it, I don't think I can be satisfied with one trophy and Mii Fighter costumes for Splatoon representation.
Moving on to my reaction, I really like that Cloud's getting in. VII is stupidly overhyped, but the game itself is still quite good. (V still has my favorite combat system and VI still has my favorite story, though.) I also love the attention to little moments of VII in the trailer. Zelda holding a Lip's Stick by a prone Cloud references Aerith meeting Cloud, Cloud dizzy in the boat references his motion sickness, etc.
He definitely looks real fun to play, I may never look at Shulk and Ike again.
Squall is still a better protagonist, though. There. I said it. And no one, no one can make me take it back! |

Squall is a great protagonist, and if we're talking about the level of competence displayed, Squall tops the charts among all FF protags, and Cloud is probably pretty low somewhere on the chart. However, as a character that's part of a story, Cloud exceeds Squall by far. He isn't necessarily a hero and isn't always the best suited for the job. To put it simply Cloud has issues. Some big, glaring issues. Meanwhile Squall has pretty much no issues at all apart from his "leave me alone" mentality. Squall isn't a part of his worlds story. He has npc's that are involved in his past, but he isn't even involved with his own past, so it feels irrelevant. Besides saving the day, Squall isn't really there. Cloud on the other hand is deeply immersed in his world. Whether or not Cloud was out to save the day, he had an impact on the world and the world had an impact on him.
But there are different reasons for liking different characters. Cloud is my favorite and Squall is also way up there for me, but I feel like Zidane and Tidus deserve a whole lot of recognition as well (Squaresoft was so amazing back then). Pre-FF7 protags still had some merits, but overall things felt a lot less involved. It only started to really feel muddled with FF6, and everything before FF6 was pretty clear cut (yes I even mean FF4).
