Hyperdimension Neptunia is a terrible game with a stupid plot, a giant parody that for some bizarre reason I love. Re;birth is a slight remake, mostly because the battle system in the original is beyond broken. I didn't know about this bundle, but I'll be buying it. I haven't heard of any of the other games before. Off topic, but if I wanted to start the Hyderdimension Neptunia series, where should I start?

Re;birth 1 is a good place to start. From what I understand it's the same plot as the original taking into more considerations the sequels, which is kinda important since the second game completely ignored the first.
The battle system in the next two games were slightly based on the firsts, but wasn't completely broken and followed more RPG standards. In the regard, if you want to try something different you may want to give the original a shot.
To follow Re;Birth 1 I believe there's a Re;birth 2 and 3.

Just to add, Re;birth 3 will be released this summer for PSVita, Fall for Steam. And there's Neptunia U: Action Unleashed for PSVita only at least for now.

To expand on the broken-ness of the original a bit, many attacks have elemental attributes, however elemental resistance isn't a thing in the game, not for monsters or characters. There's also a limit break transformation thing that you can initiate any time you want for as long as you want with absolutely no drawback.

It had to have some, but the basic plot was pretty straightforward and I doubt there could have been many significant changes. Each console patron is in the console war. They all gang up on Neptune (Sega) to get her out of the way and Neptune ends up losing her memories. Neptune meets Compa (Compile Heart) and IF (Idea Factory) and stuff happens and they have to save the world from an evil witch taking over everything (I forget her name but she represents the gaming era before consoles, I think).

Well, you'd probably know more about it than me.
Arc, you should be warned that the NISA published ones feature some heavy script editing and are heavy on memes, thanks to a cretin in the localizations staff. Said cretin is one of the two guys running (or is it over now?) the Undead Darlings KS, the one dubbing himself godfather or moe or something like that.

I think memes fit right along what's probably hundreds of video game parodies.
I think Re;birth doesn't have much in DLC, which the original had plenty of, including DLC characters. As such, iirc, Nisa (Nippon Ichi Software), Gust, and 5pb aren't in Re;birth at all. Contrary to that I think I remember hearing that Nepgear is in it (Neptune's sister from the second game).

I think memes fit right along what's probably hundreds of video game parodies. There is a difference between properly positioning them and butchering the text so the localization writer could let his own "creativity" loose.

Be prepared for some really cringeworthy moments one you notice the difference between the text and what's actually spoken.

One of the more infamous lines is (spoiler'd for the sake of children): Holy Moe Maid Waifu
I kid you not. I'd also like to remind you that the person who "localized" that was payed for doing so.

WOOOHOOOO MOD MAGIC.
The original line was something along the lines of "Wh-what is this!?"
And I actually made a mistake, this was post NISA localization. It was even worse when NISA was involved.

The English VA's are actually pretty good. It's just that... well... that doesn't exactly mean you'll enjoy it.
There's only so many ways you can say "holy moe maid waifu".

What were the games published by NISA? I'm looking here at Steam and all Neptunia games are published by Idea Factory International. Or are you guys talking about the old ones?

Yeah Hyperdimension neptunia, mk2, and Victory for the PS3 were all done by NISA.. I think PP was as well, not sure about noire devotion.
Anyway the original hyperdimension neptunia and rebirth 1 are actually quite different. They start off nearly identical but by the time you goto lastation for the first time it's really more different than similar. I don't read Japanese so I can't say how faithful the localization is or not, but I have to stand by the fact that the game was still enjoyable if you don't take it seriously, and I don't know if it was NISA's doing or IF, but I really liked Noire as a character in the original, but after that her character really became simplified and I'm not honestly sure if I'd like her very much at all if I didn't get that first impression from the original (which was NOT left alone in rebirth 1 btw).
Anyway hyperdimension neptunia is IMO a series you should try with the mindset as a Visual novel with RPG game elements. Don't treat it like an RPG alone. You have to enjoy mundane character to character interactions and banter to really appreciate the series, but if you really only care about plot and overall progression and other larger-scale story elements so many rpg gamers tend to want moreso than 'character drivel' it likely will not suit your tastes....Given you like Visual novels though, I'm pretty sure you'll like em.

I just beat Neptunia Re;birth 1, 43 hours of pure grinding fun, moe and video game jokes! Now I want to play the others, but I'm gonna wait, save some money and get PS Vita first so I can play while going to university by bus. (I apologize in advance for my horrible English)
